Former Nebraska player Josiah Allick named New Zealand National Basketball League MVP

A former Husker earned MVP for the New Zealand National Basketball League on Friday. Josiah Allick won the award following his strong rookie season with the Southland Sharks. Allick joined the Sharks back in February after serving as a graduate assistant for Nebraska this past season. He played a big part in the Huskers' 2023-2024 team, averaging 7.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Allick's command in the paint both offensively and defensively helped the fourth-seeded Sharks to the playoffs for the first time since 2019, earning him a spot on the Sal's NBL All-Star Five. For the Sharks, Allick posted regular-season averages of 18.9 points and a league-leading 11.2 rebounds per game. He also leads the league in offensive rebounds (81) and is second in the league in defensive rebounds (143). He is currently sixth in the league in both points scored (379) and free throw percentage (74.7%). His play helped the Sharks lock in home court for the elimination round and finish as one of the league's hottest teams. The team is now set to face the Canterbury Rams on Saturday afternoon, with the winner set to face the Wellington Saints or Tauranga Whai for the NZNBL Championship. JJ Mandaquit raves about future Washington basketball teamate Hannes Steinbach

JJ Mandaquit on his new Washington teammate Hannes Steinbach:"He's a special, special player. Just his feel for the game. He's smart, he knows what to do, and he just makes winning plays. I just got to talk to him briefly after the game, and I'm excited to get to Seattle with… Washington Huskies point guard JJ Mandaquit will return to campus with another gold medal after he helped lead Team USA to victory at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland. The former four-star recruit out of Utah Prep High School averaged 6.1 points, 5,4 assists, and 2 rebounds across 16.9 minutes per game as the United States went 7-0 in the tournament and cruised to a 109-76 victory over Team Germany in the gold medal game. As the highest-rated incoming high schooler in Danny Sprinkle's 2025 class, the 6-foot-1 guard is expected to make a big impact on the Huskies' rotation this season. However, as he faced off with another Washington signee in the gold medal game, German forward Hannes Steinbach, even in the heat of battle, Mandaquit couldn't help but come away impressed with his future teammate. 'He's a special, special player. Just his feel for the game. He's smart, he knows what to do, and just makes winning plays,' Mandaquit said in an interview with Cesare Milanti of Eurohoops. "I just got to talk to him briefly after the game, and I'm excited to get to Seattle with him. We'll be together in a couple of days, so I'm excited." Steinbach was one of the biggest stars of the tournament, as he made his way onto the All-Star Five after averaging 17.4 points and 13 rebounds per game, leading Team Germany as it secured the silver medal. Mandaquit, who has played against high-end competition from all over the world with Team USA, added that bringing top players like Steinbach into college basketball will continue to improve the sport. 'It's great," he said. "Why not try to face the best players in the world at the college level? I think it's good for American basketball to have these players come over and give us a challenge. They'll make the league a lot more competitive for sure.'

Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo helps United States win gold at FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2025

Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo helped the United States claim gold at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2025. In the final against Brazil, the All-American junior guard scored 16 points and added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 92-84 win at the Centro de Deportes Colectivos in Santiago, Chile. Head coach Kara Lawson's team opened the final quarter on an 11-3 run, taking a 76-69 lead with 4:16 remaining. The Fighting Irish star helped seal the win by making three free throws in the final 15 seconds, after a three-pointer from Damiris Dantas had brought Brazil within five points with 40 seconds left. Because of her strong performance in the tournament, Hidalgo was named as a member of the All-Star Five, alongside teammate Mikayla Blakes, Brazil's Dantas and Kamilla Cardoso and Canada's Syla Swords. This is Hidalgo's first senior-level title after previously winning gold with the U.S. at the U17 (2022) and U19 (2023) World Cups. The young United States team avenged its 2023 loss to Brazil and secured a berth to the 2026 FIBA women's basketball World Cup. The U.S. has now won three of the last four Women's AmeriCup titles.
