Washington Huskies point guard JJ Mandaquit will return to campus with another gold medal after he helped lead Team USA to victory at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The former four-star recruit out of Utah Prep High School averaged 6.1 points, 5,4 assists, and 2 rebounds across 16.9 minutes per game as the United States went 7-0 in the tournament and cruised to a 109-76 victory over Team Germany in the gold medal game.
As the highest-rated incoming high schooler in Danny Sprinkle's 2025 class, the 6-foot-1 guard is expected to make a big impact on the Huskies' rotation this season.
However, as he faced off with another Washington signee in the gold medal game, German forward Hannes Steinbach, even in the heat of battle, Mandaquit couldn't help but come away impressed with his future teammate.
'He's a special, special player. Just his feel for the game. He's smart, he knows what to do, and just makes winning plays,' Mandaquit said in an interview with Cesare Milanti of Eurohoops. "I just got to talk to him briefly after the game, and I'm excited to get to Seattle with him. We'll be together in a couple of days, so I'm excited."
Steinbach was one of the biggest stars of the tournament, as he made his way onto the All-Star Five after averaging 17.4 points and 13 rebounds per game, leading Team Germany as it secured the silver medal. Mandaquit, who has played against high-end competition from all over the world with Team USA, added that bringing top players like Steinbach into college basketball will continue to improve the sport.
'It's great," he said. "Why not try to face the best players in the world at the college level? I think it's good for American basketball to have these players come over and give us a challenge. They'll make the league a lot more competitive for sure.'

Major League Baseball, union could let big leaguers in 2028 Olympics during extended All-Star break

Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and players' union head Tony Clark say plans are moving ahead exploring the possibility of using major leaguers in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, a tournament that could be played on an extended All-Star break. 'I think it is a opportunity to market the game on a really global stage,' Manfred told the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday. 'Obviously the clubs are going to have to endorse this. I mean, this it's a big deal.' MLB met with Los Angeles organizers Monday in Atlanta ahead of the All-Star Game and Manfred said the Olympic officials were meeting with the Major League Baseball Players Association. 'There's a lot of work that still needs to be done,' Clark told the BBWAA in a separate session. "We do know players are interested in playing, whether it's for the Team USA or any number of other teams around the world. ... There's just a lot of conversation that needs to be had sooner rather than later to see how viable this is, but we're hopeful that we can figure our way through it for the benefit of the game." The World Baseball Softball Confederation said Monday the baseball tournament will be played from July 15-20 at Dodger Stadium. MLB is considering whether it can interrupt its 2028 season to allow major leaguers to participate, which could necessitate changes to the sport's national television contracts. 'They put out a schedule. They tell you it's not going to move. We'll see whether there's any movement on that,' Manfred said. 'It is possible to take it, to play the All-Star Game in its normal spot, have a single break that would be longer, obviously, but still play 162 games without bleeding into the middle of November. That is possible, OK? It would require significant accommodations, but it's possible.' MLB did not allow players on 40-man rosters to participate in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, when Nippon Professional Baseball interrupted its season and Japan beat the U.S. 2-0 in the gold medal game. 'In the event that major league players are going to play, what does that mean and what does that look like?" Clark said. "And perhaps just as importantly, what does it mean for those players who aren't participating? What type of scheduling adjustments need to be made? What type travel considerations and support need to considered? What does that means in regards to insurance?' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

A Decision Has Been Made on Trading Lauri Markkanen

A Decision Has Been Made on Trading Lauri Markkanen originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Amid a busy offseason, the Utah Jazz have made a final decision regarding Lauri Markkanen's future with the team. The Finnish big man has been one of the best players on the roster since he joined the West team from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Advertisement Markkanen was named as a potential trade target for multiple contenders in recent seasons, including the Golden State Warriors before they traded for Jimmy Butler, the Los Angeles Lakers before they landed Deandre Ayton and the Phoenix Suns before they completed a trade for Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks in a seven-team exchange. The market appears to be strong for the 2022-24 Most Improved Player of the Year, who averaged 19 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game, shooting 42.3% from the field, 34.6% from deep and 87.6% from the free-throw line. The Jazz switched their approach and parted ways with several veterans, such as Jordan Clarkson, John Collins and Colin Sexton, to open room for their young players. Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen© Chris Nicoll-Imagn Images Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports on Tuesday that all those moves made people within the league wonder if the Jazz were willing to part with Markkanen, too. With Austin Ainge taking over as the primary decision-maker, some thought they could take advantage and pull off a move for the veteran. Advertisement "That is not Utah's intention, sources told ESPN," MacMahon wrote. "It would be too much to describe Markkanen as untouchable, but the Jazz still project the All-Star forward as a key player in their future core." During his eight-year NBA career, Markkanen became a one-time All-Star and a member of the 2017-18 All-Rookie Team. At 27, he's just entering his prime and if the pieces click for the Jazz, he could be ready to lead them to contend in a couple of years. Commanders Retiring Hall of Fame Receiver Art Monk's No. 81

The Washington Commanders said Tuesday they are retiring Hall of Fame wide receiver Art Monk's No. 81 this season. Monk is the sixth player in franchise history to get that honor, joining Darrell Green, Sammy Baugh, Bobby Mitchell, Sonny Jurgensen and Sean Taylor. The team announced that Monk would have his number retired on November 2, when the Commanders host the Seattle Seahawks for a Sunday night game in Week 9 of the upcoming NFL season. Monk was part of all three of Washington's Super Bowl teams during the organization's glory days and is arguably one of the greatest players in franchise history. He played 14 of his 16 NFL seasons with Washington before finishing his career with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. From his debut in 1980 through 1993, Monk caught 888 passes for 12,026 yards and 65 touchdowns during the regular season and 69 passes for 1,062 yards and seven TDs in the playoffs. An All-Pro pick in 1982 and a three-time Pro Bowl selection, Monk was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. The Commanders did not retire any player numbers for most of their history. Other than Baugh, whose number was honored in 1953, the Commanders did not retire any numbers until 2020 when Mitchell's turn came up, kicking off a stretch of five retired numbers in six years. While Monk's number was not retired by the Commanders until 2025, no player in a Washington uniform has worn it since he last put it on in 1993. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
