Commanders Retiring Hall of Fame Receiver Art Monk's No. 81
The team announced that Monk would have his number retired on November 2, when the Commanders host the Seattle Seahawks for a Sunday night game in Week 9 of the upcoming NFL season.
Monk was part of all three of Washington's Super Bowl teams during the organization's glory days and is arguably one of the greatest players in franchise history. He played 14 of his 16 NFL seasons with Washington before finishing his career with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles.
From his debut in 1980 through 1993, Monk caught 888 passes for 12,026 yards and 65 touchdowns during the regular season and 69 passes for 1,062 yards and seven TDs in the playoffs. An All-Pro pick in 1982 and a three-time Pro Bowl selection, Monk was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
The Commanders did not retire any player numbers for most of their history. Other than Baugh, whose number was honored in 1953, the Commanders did not retire any numbers until 2020 when Mitchell's turn came up, kicking off a stretch of five retired numbers in six years.
While Monk's number was not retired by the Commanders until 2025, no player in a Washington uniform has worn it since he last put it on in 1993.

If he's your starter, okay, we're fine. We're fine. You're like the Seahawks fans are going through right now. But then also it's like, no, there's some frustrations and everything like, and even just ranking wise, I consider him kind of like 18 to 22, the starting quarterback right now, you know, like that kind of just feels right. And you say that because the other name that I was thinking of here was Tua. That was kind of the, you know, but just thinking that if you don't have a Darnold or Tua level quarterback, kind of feeling iffy, kind of feeling scary. And then there's times where you have a good team and then you're like, man, that's all we got there. Like, okay, yeah, he can get the job done, but is he really going to push us over the top? Is he? Quarterback is such a complicated discussion because it's just all the other impacts. Like if you just want league-wide, like the most average quarterback, like if you included backups and everything, it's like Jacoby. But I, I do, I'm going with Darnold for the starters. You're going to want more sometimes, but if you don't have a Sam Darnold level tier that can actually do some things when things are going well, you're going to always want more, and I feel like that's just the right threshold for Sam Darnold. Threshold for Sam Darnold. It's just weird to describe Sam Darnold as average because he's such a high low player that it's like, it's weird to just go, like, you are average when it comes down to it. Are average when it comes down to it. What causes so much discussion around Sam is like how you end up at the average result because you can pull these plays where he looks like Mahomes and then there are other plays where he looks like the version of Brian Fitzpatrick that came back to the Jets after holding out when he gained a bunch of weight, and you saw that guy. I love that you have these Jets Giants memories because you say them and then my brain just goes like it just gets rattled back into like that time period. But, uh, Sam will be the most frustrating way to get a C+. He gets that 2.5 GPA, but he never got a B on any assignment. It was all A's and F's, and then that's how he got to the 2.5 GPA. The Buffalo Bills entered the 2025 offseason hoping to improve the team enough for a Super Bowl run and to keep pace with AFC rivals like the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs. Buffalo had eyes on improving mostly on defense, where it needed help at linebacker, safety, corner and the interior of the defensive line. General manager Brandon Beane addressed corner with their first-round pick this year in Maxwell Hairston and spent their second-round pick on South Carolina defensive tackle T.J. Sanders. Their fourth-round pick was Kentucky DT Deone Walker, and the team also added another corner in the fifth round in Ohio State's Jordan Hancock. With all the additions to the defense, Beane and the team hope there's enough there for a Super Bowl run. But Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine wrote that Buffalo might not have done enough. "Much like the Ravens, anything short of a Super Bowl is going to be disappointing for the Buffalo Bills this season. Both teams have unquestionably been among the most elite teams in the league," Ballentine wrote. "Both have been denied a Super Bowl berth because of Patrick Mahomes' Chiefs. For both teams, every offseason becomes an arms race to find the edge that could put them over the top. This offseason, it was clearly looking to upgrade the defensive line for the Bills. Not only did they add veterans in Joey Bosa, Larry Ogunjobi and Michael Hoecht, but they also attacked the defensive front in the draft by taking T.J. Sanders (second round), Landon Jackson (third round) and Deone Walker (fourth round). Assuming all six new additions make the roster, that's a ton of depth up front. "After watching the success the Eagles had against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the Bills have to hope that a deep collection of defensive linemen can push them over the top.
