Sumit Nagal Back In Action For India! Rejoins Davis Cup Squad For Swiss Tie

Last Updated: Sumit Nagal returns to India's Davis Cup team after two years, joining Yuki Bhambri for the World Group I tie against Switzerland in Biel. India's top-ranked singles player Sumit Nagal has made a return to the national team after a two-year hiatus, while leading doubles specialist Yuki Bhambri is also back in the fold as the All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Friday announced an eight-member squad for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Switzerland. The World Group I first-round clash will be held in the Swiss city of Biel from September 12, on indoor hard courts. Nagal Back After Two-Year Gap Nagal last represented India in the Davis Cup during the home tie against Morocco in Lucknow in September 2023, where he won both his singles matches to help secure a 4–1 victory. Since then, he missed the landmark away tie in Pakistan in February 2024, along with subsequent matches against Sweden and Togo. Despite a dip in form and ranking—he is currently placed at No. 306—Nagal showed signs of resurgence with a semifinal run at the Trieste Challenger in Italy earlier this month. Joining Nagal in the singles line-up are Karan Singh (ranked 403) and promising youngster Aryan Shah (ranked 442). The reserves for singles are Sasikumar Mukund (463) and Dakshineshwar Suresh (790). In doubles, Bhambri (ranked 35) and N Sriram Balaji (75) have been selected as the main pair, with Rithvik Bollipalli (77) named as reserve. Bhambri last represented India in their historic 4–0 win over Pakistan in Islamabad but missed the next two ties. Indoor Surface Poses Challenge The indoor surface in Biel is expected to be fast, which may not suit Nagal's game, traditionally better on slower courts. However, India's Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal expressed confidence in Nagal's adaptability. 'Sumit Nagal had a great journey to the top 100. He plays at a high level, and he can make those adjustments. It's not going to be easy. In the Denmark tie against Holger Rune, it was a tight match. We have to see what kind of bounce the court offers," Rajpal told PTI. The final playing squad will be determined based on form, fitness, and match sharpness during practice sessions leading up to the tie. Switzerland, who lost 1–3 to Spain in the recent Davis Cup qualifiers, are expected to field a strong team. Their top-ranked singles player is Jerome Kym (145), followed by veterans Stan Wawrinka (156), Marc-Andrea Huesler (170), and Dominic Stricker (205). Veteran player Ramkumar Ramanathan has been omitted from the squad—a move widely anticipated due to his recent struggles. Once valued for his ability to switch between singles and doubles, Ramkumar has found it difficult to qualify for singles main draws even at the Challenger level. Nagal, Yuki in Indian team for Davis Cup tie against Switzerland

The top-three players, Sumit Nagal, Karan Singh and Aryan Shah, have been selected to play the singles matches in the Davis Cup World Group-1 tie to be staged on indoor hard courts in Switzerland on September 12 and 13. All the players were available for selection this time, and Yuki Bhambri and Sriram Balaji will feature in the doubles. The selection committee of the All India Tennis Association (AITA), which met under the chairmanship of Nandan Bal, also announced three reserve players — Dhakshineswar Suresh, S. Mukund and Rithvik Bollipalli. Rohit Rajpal and Ashutosh Singh will be the captain and coach respectively. India has a 2-1 win-loss record against Switzerland, and has beaten it both at home and away. The two teams met the last time in 1993 on the grass courts of South Club in Kolkata, when Ramesh Krishnan and Leander Paes helped the team win the tie 3-2. The two won their singles matches against Jakob Hlasek, and won the doubles in five sets against Hlasek and Marc Rosset. The Barcelona Olympics gold medallist Rosset won both his singles matches then. The current Switzerland team, which lost the first round of qualifier to Spain, is expected to be selected from Jerome Kym (145), Marc-Andrea Huesler (170), Dominic Stricker (205), Mika Brunold (300), Alexander Ritschard (314), Jakub Paul (350) and Remy Bertola (352). Nagal has slipped to a rank of 306, while Karan and Aryan are ranked 403 and 442 respectively. Yuki is the highest ranked Indian doubles player at 35, and Balaji is at 75, two places above Rithvik.

Tennis player killed by father at Gurgaon home: ‘Accused was taunted every time he went to buy milk at his village'

A day after state-level tennis player Radhika Yadav (25) was shot dead, allegedly by her father, at their Gurgaon home, a city court Friday granted one-day remand of the accused to the police. The incident took place on Thursday around 10.30 am. Radhika was cooking when her father, Deepak Yadav (54), took his pistol and allegedly shot her in the waist. Her uncle, Kuldeep (46), who lives on the ground floor with his family, heard the shots, rushed upstairs, and found Radhika lying in a pool of blood. As per the FIR lodged on Kuldeep's complaint, he noticed a .32 bore revolver — Deepak's licensed weapon — in the drawing room. He and his son, Piyush, then rushed Radhika to a private hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. In his statement to the police Thursday evening, he said there was no issue in the family that would lead his brother to kill his niece. However, according to the police, Deepak allegedly could not stand Radhika's success — she was gradually climbing up the ranks internationally in the doubles category, was coaching at a private academy, and was individually teaching high-profile clients. During questioning, police said he claimed he was taunted by locals whenever he went to buy milk at his village in Wazirabad. Station House Officer Inspector Vinod Kumar had said on Thursday, 'He (Deepak) had been upset for a while as he was being taunted by locals over his daughter's income. He was troubled by their remarks — they would keep saying the house is running on her money, and he is too dependent on that. He had asked her (Radhika) several times earlier to stop working at the academy, but she refused. He could not take it anymore.' A police spokesperson told The Indian Express that they have found no evidence so far to suggest a love affair or objection to her social media posts as possible motives for the crime. The FIR has been lodged under sections of murder and offences under the Arms Act. Police recovered the murder weapon along with five empty shells and one live cartridge from the scene. The autopsy report states that four bullets hit Radhika. The body was handed back to her family after the post-mortem. Born on March 23, 2000, Radhika had competed in various national and international tournaments, achieving a career-best ranking of 75 in Girls Under-18, 53 in Women's Doubles, and 35 in Women's Singles as per All India Tennis Association (AITA) records. She was active on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit, where she was ranked 113.

Tennis player Radhika Yadav shot dead by father at Gurgaon home

A 25-year-old Gurgaon-based tennis player, Radhika Yadav, was shot dead, allegedly by her father, at their residence in Gurgaon on Thursday afternoon. According to a police spokesperson, her father, who has been detained and is being questioned, fired five shots — three of which hit Radhika. Police said they are to ascertain the motive behind the crime. As of now, no other family member was known to be present at the time of the incident, they added. The gun has been seized and a case registered at the Sector 56 police station, police said. Radhika, born on March 23, 2000, was an emerging tennis player from Haryana. She competed in various national and international tournaments, achieving a career-best ranking of 75 in Girls Under-18, 53 in Women's Doubles, and 35 in Women's Singles as per All India Tennis Association (AITA) records. She was active on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit, where she was ranked 113. This is a developing story and will be updated with further details that are expected shortly.
