Assam: 81 ‘anti-nationals' arrested for ‘sympathising' with Pakistan after Pahalgam attack, says CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 81 'anti-nationals' have been arrested till now for 'sympathising' with Pakistan following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Phalgam. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the latest arrests included a person named Mohammed Dilbar Hussain from Sonitpur and another named Hafizur Rahman from Kamrup. 'Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking action,' he added on X. The attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 17 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. Since the attack, the BJP government in Assam has been arresting persons accused of 'defending Pakistan' through social media posts or public remarks. 81 Anti-Nationals are now behind bars for sympathising with Pak | #Update | 1 June 1️⃣ @SonitpurPolice arrested Md Dilbar Hussain 2️⃣ @KamrupPolice arrested Hafizur Rahman Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking actions. — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) June 1, 2025 On April 24, Sarma had said that the state would take action against anyone directly or indirectly defending the 'horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam'. This came after Opposition All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for claiming that the Pahalgam attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack may have been the results of conspiracies by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. Islam got bail in the sedition case on May 14, but was detained again under the National Security Act on the same day, PTI reported. The Act allows for long periods of detention without trial and suspends important rights of the accused person, including the right to legal representation and immediate information about the cause of the arrest.

Assam: Two arrested for pro-Pak stand on social media

Assam Police have arrested two persons on the charges of taking a pro-Pakistan stand on social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. The arrested persons have been identified as Md Dilbar Hussain and Hafizur Rahman. Hussain was taken into custody in the Sonitpur district, while Rahman was arrested in the Kamrup district. According to CM Sarma, a total of 81 anti-nationals are now behind bars for sympathising with Pakistan. He said, "Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking action." Among the 81 arrested people, the most prominent is the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam. He was the first person to be arrested in the state for the "pro-Pakistan" stand. Aminul Islam, an AIUDF MLA from Assam's Dhing Assembly constituency, was arrested on May 1 on sedition charges following his provocative statement regarding the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. In a video clip circulated on social media, the AIUDF leader is heard claiming that the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks were part of a "government conspiracy". Aminul Islam said, "Six years ago in Pulwama, when the RDX blast happened and 42 soldiers died, I said on that day that the Pulwama blast happened at the behest of a conspiracy of the Central government, and it was a conspiracy to win the 2019 Lok Sabha polls." He added that what happened in Pahalgam is that the "BJP has been peddling that the terrorists asked about religion and opened fire only on Hindus, and they let go of Muslims". "But the victims said that the terrorists opened fire without asking about anybody's name, and I doubt that the nexus which was involved in the Pulwama attack in which RDX was used, is behind the Pahalgam incident," he said. "If the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government does not conduct a fair investigation into the incident and tries to bring a division between Hindus and Muslims, I would believe that this incident happened because of a conspiracy," Aminul Islam said. However, AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced himself from his party legislator's comments. Ajmal said, "AIUDF stands with the government. The terrorists have no religion, and those who spread terrorism are against Islam."

"Indian Muslims harassed in name of identifying foreigners:" AIUDF submits memorandum to Assam Guv

Guwahati (Assam) [India], May 28 (ANI): The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya expressing their deep concern about identifying illegal immigrants and alleged that Indian Muslims are being harassed in the name of identifying foreigners. 'We express our deep concern and strong protest against the continued harassment of Indian Muslims in Assam under the pretext of identifying and apprehending so-called illegal foreigners. In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people, especially from the Muslim Community, who have been picked up, interrogated and even arrested on mere suspicion of being illegal immigrants. The actions have often been taken without credible evidence, legal notice, or proper verification of documents. While some of these individuals have later been released after being found to be genuine Indian citizens,' said the memorandum submitted by AIUDF. A delegation of AIUDF, led by its MLAs Rafiqul Islam and Aminul Islam, on Wednesday met Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhawan in Guwahati and submitted the memorandum. The AIUDF urged the Assam Governor to intervene in this matter and to take necessary steps to - direct concerned authorities to exercise greater caution and legal diligence in identifying suspected foreigners, ensure that no Indian citizen is wrongfully detained or subjected to intimidation, investigate and hold accountable those responsible for wrongful arrests or misuse of power, establish a transparent and humane procedure with adequate legal aid for verifying citizenship claims, promote awareness among officials and the public to avoid communal profiling and ensure that enforcement measures are free of bias or prejudice. The AIUDF said in its memorandum that, most of the people of Muslim community living under poverty have to survive with daily wages as labourers, have hardly scope of defending themselves from such atrocities and facing such trauma, indignity and damage to reputation caused to them and their families cannot be undone. 'Such repeated incidents have created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among large sections of our population, particularly among poor and marginalised Muslims, many of whom lack the resources or literacy to defend themselves against arbitrary action. It is alarming that even individuals possessing valid documentation such as voter ID cards, Aadhaar and land records are being subjected to doubt and harassment. We like to state clearly and unequivocally that the AIUDF does not support illegal immigration. We believe in the sovereignty of the nation and the sanctity of its borders. However, our objection lies in the misuse of authority and targeting of Indian citizens in the name of identifying foreigners. Harassment, arbitrary detention and wrongful accusations not only violate the principles of justice and fairness but also undermine the trust between the people and the administration,' AIUDF said in the memorandum. Assam: AIUDF protests harassment of Muslims by branding them foreigners

The minority-based All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) said Indian Muslims continue to be harassed in Assam in the name of identifying foreigners. On Wednesday (May 28, 2025), an 11-member delegation of the Maulana Badruddin Ajmal-led party submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to register their protest against the 'continued harassment'. The memorandum followed the alleged pushback of 14 people, declared non-citizens by the Foreigners' Tribunals (FTs) or facing charges as 'illegal immigrants', into Bangladesh from western Assam's South Salmara-Mankachar district on Tuesday. The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel manning the frontier, however, said these 14 were prevented from entering India. 'Indians are being declared foreigners and pushed out to the no-man's land along the international border in the name of detection and deportation of Bangladeshi people. The Bangladesh forces are not letting them enter their country, and the BSF is preventing them from coming back,' MLA Aminul Islam told The Hindu. 'These people have been stranded on the no-man's land (neutral strip between the border of two countries) without food, water, or a toilet since Tuesday morning. It is not that Bangladesh does not take back its people who enter India illegally, but there's a proper procedure. These are Indians branded foreigners and pushed back without any bilateral discussion,' he said. Mr. Islam represents Mankachar, the Assembly constituency where the pushback happened. He led the AIUDF delegation of MLAs and former MLAs along with Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasmi, who represents the Bilasipara West constituency. 'Atmosphere of fear' Through the memorandum, the AIUDF told the Governor that in recent weeks, an increasing number of people, especially Muslims, have been picked up, interrogated, and arrested on mere suspicion of being illegal immigrants. 'The actions have often been taken without credible evidence, legal notice, or proper verification of documents,' it said. The party said most of the people targeted are poor and daily wagers with hardly any scope of defending themselves against 'such atrocities', and the trauma, indignity, and reputational damage caused to them and their families cannot be undone. 'Such repeated incidents have created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among large sections of our population, particularly among poor and marginalised Muslims... It is alarming that even individuals possessing valid documentation such as voter ID cards, Aadhaar, and land records are being subjected to doubt and harassment,' the AIUDF memorandum read. Asserting that the party does not support illegal immigration and believes in the sanctity of India's borders, the party urged the Governor to take steps to direct the authorities to exercise greater caution and legal diligence in identifying suspected foreigners and ensure that no Indian citizen is wrongfully detained or subjected to intimidation. Seeking a transparent and humane procedure with adequate legal aid to verify citizenship claims, the AIUDF suggested an awareness drive for officials and the people to avoid communal profiling and ensure that enforcement measures are free from bias or prejudice. The party also said those responsible for wrongful arrests or misuse of power should be held accountable.
