Allegheny Valley man arrested on child pornography charges

A man from the Allegheny Valley has been arrested and is charged with possessing child pornography, police say. The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office says Tyler Slezak, 25, of Natrona Heights, surrendered to detectives on Wednesday afternoon at Magisterial District Judge Carolyn S. Bengel's office in Brackenridge. Slezak is facing five felony counts of possessing child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility. Court records show a CyberTip led detectives to begin investigating Slezak. Detectives executed a search warrant on Slezak's home, where they say they seized a cellphone containing files of child pornography. A sheriff's office spokesperson says Slezak was released on a non-monetary bond, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 18. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Woman, wanted man accused of causing $10K worth of damage to former Westinghouse property

A man with active arrest warrants and a woman were arrested after police say they found them stealing from the former Westinghouse property in Churchill. A Department of Public Works official called officers with reports of suspicious activity happening at 1310 Beulah Road at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, court documents say. Officers said they are familiar with the property because they regularly patrol it for trespassing, burglaries or vandalism happening at the abandoned warehouse, office or laboratory buildings. When they got there, a Red Ford Fusion matching the description given to them was found parked at the entrance. Officers said 'authorized personnel only' and 'no trespassing' signs are posted on the entrance and around the perimeter of the property. Police stopped the vehicle and said they found Jonathan Manning, 37, of White Oak and Cherie White, 32, of Monroeville inside. Court documents say Manning had arrest warrants out of the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office, Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office and PSP Pittsburgh. Police said he originally gave them a fake ID and false name. A pair of bolt cutters was found in the front seat and the back seat appeared to be full of rubber-coated copper wire in garbage cans, police said. Officers worked with the property owner and said they found areas where wiring appeared to have been cut. An estimated $2,500 worth of wire was taken from the property, but documents say repairs will cost $10,000. White and Manning face burglary, receiving stolen property and trespassing among other charges. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. He was taken into custody without incident, the sheriff's office says. Detectives then swept the home, finding an oversized teddy bear. They moved the bear to make sure no one was hiding beneath it, and felt a hard object inside the bear, which they believed to be a weapon, the sheriff's office says. Deputies secured a search warrant and recovered two handguns inside the bear, one of which was reported stolen from Uniontown. According to the sheriff's office, they also recovered what deputies believe to be heroin and marijuana. Purdue was taken to the Allegheny County Jail, processed on the bench warrants and is now facing new firearm and drug charges, the sheriff's office says. Local lawmaker's bill that would limit bail options for violent offenders passes State Senate

The Pennsylvania State Senate passed a bill that seeks to restrict bail options for some defendants. Local lawmaker Devlin Robinson (R-37) introduced Senate Bill 490, which limits bail options for people with a history of violent crimes, less than two weeks ago. It passed in a 32-17 vote on Monday. Before the vote, Robinson addressed his colleagues and stated that the bill is a direct response to the actions of a controversial Allegheny County Magestrial District Judge, Xander Orenstein. Orenstein was barred from hearing arraignments last April after a slew of controversial rulings involving releasing criminals on non-monetary bond. RELATED COVERAGE >>> Local magistrate Xander Orenstein pulled from arraignments 'until further notice,' sources say Two of those criminals, a man accused of trafficking millions of collars of drugs into Pittsburgh on a bus and a high-speed chase suspect, went on to flee from Pennsylvania after being released. Robinson says extraditing the men back after their arrests in New York City and Florida, respectively, cost the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office up to $70,000. Robinson also spoke about Orenstein opting to release Anthony Quesen on non-monetary bond after a 2023 assault at Point State Park. Police later arrested Quesen in connection to the stabbing death of off-duty state liquor enforcement officer Benjamin Brallier along the Montour Trail. 'This is just unacceptable that these dangerous criminals were released on a non-monetary condition despite their violent history of crime. This is just one example of a high-level threat to our constituents and it's a shame that our current law doesn't provide better safeguards for these extreme circumstances,' Robinson said on the Senate floor. The bill only limits bail options for people with a history of violent crime, who have injured or run from authorities, or who possess 10 grams or more of fentanyl. 'Senate Bill 490 is simply a safeguard put into place to keep our Pennsylvania residents safe in a significant way by ensuring the most dangerous individuals aren't released without bail,' Robinson said. The bill now heads to the State House. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

Allegheny County sheriff K9 Zeke retires after 7-year career

The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office is honoring one of their K9s who just retired. K9 Zeke retired Friday after seven years on the force. He joined the sheriff's office in 2018 and officials say his bomb detection training kept him busy responding to threats at various facilities and participating in multiple gun searches. On top of his hard work, Zeke was also loved by the community for the hundreds of outreach projects he was a part of. 'To know that Zeke and Deputy Perrier worked not only on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, but also throughout southwestern Pennsylvania is a testament to their skills as a team and a validation of the crucial role that K9′s play in this office and throughout law enforcement,' Sheriff Kraus said.
