'I tried DJ speaker and it's great for summer garden party'

Summer parties and outdoors barbecues are on the way and AlphaTheta's Wave Eight has left me ditching my palm-sized speaker thanks to its versatile use Summertime is best for outdoor parties with friends and family, and a premium speaker makes it a party favourite. With the mercury on the rise towards the weekend, it's about time to fire up a barbecue and get the grooves on. Last month, I spent both my bank holidays hosting garden parties with the AlphaTheta Wave Eight DJ Speaker, as it offers more boost than my usual Bluetooth models. At £859, it is a professional DJ speaker but it's also great to have in the garden. This is more powerful than the usual palm-size portable speakers, I have a Marshall Emberton and a Bose Soundlink Mini, and it can be used at home, the studio, and medium-sized venues if you're looking for something professional. To set up the Wave Eight speaker is pretty easy, turn on the speaker and pair with Bluetooth and I can play music from my laptop or mobile phone. I also use it as a sound bar to enjoy the thrilling beats while binge-watching the Mission: Impossible series. With the extendable handle and wheels, it's easy to move the Wave Eight in and out of the house but I have to admit it is a workout to lift it up to my first-floor balcony. Having said that, the Marshall Emberton III speaker, £149.99, is great to use at weekend picnics with friends at a park. Claiming to have a stronger bass than its predecessor, the speaker is also upgraded to a batter battery with up to 32 hours of play time. Comparing the Marshall to Bose Soundlink Mini (now discontinued), the Emberton III is much lighter to carry and it has smoother edges to give a robust look and protection. For the Wave Eight, the main feature, SonicLink, can wirelessly transmit audio from my Pioneer DJ controller to the speaker without any delay and yet bring the vibes to the party while my guests enjoyed a summer club-like experience in the garden. The gloomy weather did bring us occasional showers, but I'm pleased to find out the speaker is also waterproof and splashproof. I didn't have to turn the volume to maximum and yet it delivered a punch to the sound that my neighbour came around and said: "The sound is good and loud and I thought the pub's DJ has returned." On a professional use level, my brother has also invited friends over and hosted a concert on the balcony and livestreamed onto social media like a Tiny Desk gig, which consumer-use speakers won't be able to support. However the Wave Eight speaker has a short battery life of eight hours whereas other brands such as the Bose S1 Pro+, the battery can last up to 11 hours and it's comparatively cheaper, at £596. The steep price tag is also another negative that might steer shoppers away and for a cheaper alternative, Yahama STAGEPAS400BT, £658.52 in a bundle, comes with a removable mixer and works as an active or passive speaker. The speaker is also missing a playback equalizer panel, which could have allowed the user to boost or reduce the sound frequency as they wish, but AlphaTheta Wave Eight provides five Sound Mode Presets, which beginners find it easy to navigate.

Little Pink Book & AlphaTheta Bring Their Female DJ Workshops to Dubai

The free workshops, led by top regional DJs, offer aspiring female artists hands-on access to gear, mentorship, and performance opportunities. Apr 07, 2025 After a successful debut in November 2024, Little Pink Book is once again joining forces with AlphaTheta to bring back their Start From Scratch MENA DJ workshop series in Dubai. Set to take place on April 9th and the 10th, the initiative returns with a mission to give emerging female talent free, practical access to the region's growing electronic music scene. Start From Scratch, founded by AlphaTheta (formerly known as Pioneer DJ), is a global initiative aimed at empowering underrepresented communities through hands-on, community-led DJ workshops. In the MENA region, the project partners with Dubai Sound Academy and Little Pink Book to connect female-identifying artists with cutting-edge equipment, foundational skills, and industry mentorship. This second edition brings heavyweight guidance from within the scene. Abu Dhabi-based Lebanese Afro-house artist Off Kourse and Dubai-based Egyptian DJ/producer ADIRA will lead the sessions, offering technical instruction and sharing insights on navigating the MENA music landscape. Both artists bring distinctive regional experience and a passion for breaking down barriers for new talent. 'It's great to be bringing Start From Scratch back to Dubai,' says Roberta Hickey, founder of Little Pink Book. 'We had so many amazing women join us last year, and I can't wait to see who starts their DJ journey with us this time around.' Workshops are completely free and will be held at Soho Garden, one of Dubai's premier nightlife venues. Participants can choose from two workshop tracks based on their experience level. A select group will also be invited to join the Start From Scratch Accelerator Programme, which includes a fully funded DJ course at Dubai Sound Academy—culminating in a live performance slot at Soho Garden. To register, you can head to @littlepinkbook on Instagram or visit the official Partiful website.

Apple Music is integrating with music tools to allow DJs to create mixes using its catalog | TechCrunch Apple AirPods Max

DJ with Apple Music lets you use your subscription with Serato, Rekordbox, Engine DJ and more

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. In recent years there's been something of a disconnect between the universal ease of streaming music for listening purposes and the convoluted process of streaming music for the purpose of DJing. That's not to say that streaming isn't a thing in the DJ realm – the likes of Beatport, Beatsource and Soundcloud each offer streaming subscriptions aimed specifically at DJs, and AlphaTheta's recent emphasis on Cloud services means that Rekordbox users can access their library of tracks remotely. But for the most part there's been no way for users of streaming giants Spotify or Apple Music to make use of their subscriptions for DJing. That's set to change with the launch of DJ with Apple Music, a new functionality for the streaming service aimed at making the platform's library available to DJs. This manifests in a few ways. Firstly, as a new section within Apple Music's own interface that hosts a variety of curated DJ-focused playlists. This has playlists built around genres, as well as those curated by DJs and DJ gear brands. More significantly, it also means that Apple Music will now be integrated into a variety of different DJing platforms including Serato, AlphaTheta's Rekordbox, and inMusic's Engine DJ, Denon DJ, Numark, and RANE DJ. While functionality is a little different across different platforms, this means that Apple Music subscribers can mix with tracks from the service's library within their chosen DJ platform, as well as apply tags, set cue points and build playlists. On the AlphaTheta front, Apple Music arrives in the desktop version of Rekordbox (v7.1), along with rekordbox for iOS, and will also be implemented into two of the brand's all-in-one DJ systems, the XDJ-AZ and Omnis-Duo. The company also tells us that integration should roll out for the CDJ-3000s and Opus-Quad in the near future, and will be present in all future product releases. With Serato, users can access Apple Music tracks from the downloads pages of both Serato DJ Lite and Serato DJ Pro. It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Apple Music has been integrated into a DJ platform – users of Algoriddim Djay can already stream tracks from Apple Music. Rival streaming platform Tidal is already integrated into several DJ platforms too. However, today's announcement is certainly the most high-profile crossover we've seen between a streaming platform and the DJ realm. A notably absent name from the list of integrated applications is Native Instruments' Traktor, which is a shame, as the latest iteration – Traktor Pro 4 – impressed us when it finally arrived last year. 'Apple Music is committed to supporting DJs,' says Stephen Campbell, Global Head of Dance, Electronic & DJ Mixes at Apple Music. 'With this latest integration, we're taking that commitment even further – seamlessly connecting Apple Music with the industry's leading DJ software and hardware. This innovation brings the full power of Apple Music into the creative workflow, making it easier than ever for DJs to access, play, and discover music in real time.' It's worth noting a couple of major caveats that mean this functionality is likely to appeal primarily to beginner and hobbyist DJs, at least for the time being. Firstly, there's no offline functionality for DJing with Apple Music tracks. This means you can't download and save tracks added to your DJ platform of choice, and won't be able to access them without a stable internet connection – something we'd be wary of when it comes to playing any high-profile sets. Secondly, Apple Music's terms of service state that music can only be used for noncommercial purposes, which means that using streamed tracks for any paid DJ gigs – including weddings, club gigs, parties, etc – would be a violation of said terms. To point out the obvious too, making use of Apple Music within any DJ platform will require both a subscription to Apple Music and subscription to/license for your DJ software of choice. On the positive side, closing the gap between the streaming services we use for listening to music and DJ software libraries is a massive step forward for beginner and at-home DJs. In the past, when DJing relied on physical media like vinyl or CDs, or even in more recent times when a library of purchased tracks or dedicated subscription was required, getting started as a DJ could be a prohibitively expensive process. Integration like this will certainly make it cheaper for beginners to try their hand at DJing, as well as explore new styles and genres. Speaking as somebody that no longer DJs in public regularly, but has been roped out of retirement to play at a few friends' weddings in recent years, this functionality would have saved me hours of prep time if it had been available a few years ago. (It's not a violation of the terms of service if you're getting paid in free drinks, right? – I'll have our lawyers look into this). The launch of DJ with Apple Music follows the platform's introduction of DJ Mixes back in 2021, which integrated streamable mixed sets into the library. Apple Music integration is now available on more DJ platforms

Starting today, DJs will have access to Apple Music's catalog of over 100 million songs through more hardware and software platforms. DJs of all skill levels can build and mix sets on AlphaTheta, Serato, Engine DJ, Denon DJ, Numark and RANE DJ. This news follows the initial debut of Apple Music integration with Algoriddim's djay Pro software last year. There's also a new name for the whole initiative: DJ with Apple Music. And yes, a subscription is required. This isn't to be confused with Apple Music's DJ Mixes, a separate program that began in 2021. The idea there was to attract creators of said DJ mixes and sets to the platform by leveraging Shazam's technology (owned by Apple) to ensure proper royalties were paid out. Now, Apple says, it's giving DJs access to its music catalog so it can be used as a creative tool and so they can easily tap into their personal libraries. There's a new DJ with Apple Music category page in the streaming app with curated playlists, and each platform has its own curator page complete with practice material. Spotify used to allow integration with third-party DJ apps, but the service stopped doing so in 2020. If you're looking for options, djay Pro works with Tidal and SoundCloud, in addition to Apple Music.
