Would you dress like the pope?
Just before the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria fashion show began last Wednesday, the guests mingled in front of the imposing Castel Sant'Angelo, which dates from AD123 — part papal residence, part mausoleum for emperors and part, as the name suggests, fortress. Among them, towering above those around him, was Manchester City's statuesque Erling Haaland, wearing an elegant pale grey combo of polo neck and relaxed, full trousers. Only a silver necklace over the knit sparkled as a decorative hint. But boy was he about to be eclipsed in the wardrobe department. The Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria collection is unusual in the extreme. It is essentially couture for men and is presented each year in a different Italian location that the designer duo of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana select with a view of engaging in a dialogue with its history and tradition. This year they went for the big one: Rome. As Dolce says: 'Rome is an extraordinary city, an endless source of inspiration. It embodies our love for Italy and its roots, for the artists and creatives that in time have celebrated it.' Before the show as the invitees enjoyed an aperitivo, he confided to me that 'Rome is intense culturally — it is so different to Milan. You feel the presence and influence of the Vatican. It is a heavy city — not in a bad way, just intense.' This article contains affiliate links that will earn us revenue So when places were taken and the classical music soundtrack started, it perhaps shouldn't have come as such a surprise that the fashion show — the first permitted to be staged here — kicked off with a procession of 'cardinals' in their red vestments, like a scene from Edward Berger's movie Conclave. These took their place on the bridge that connects the castle to the city, the Ponte Sant'Angelo, which is lined with marble angels designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The models then began their own stately procession. We were treated to a visual symphony of luxurious hand-made decorative opulence, inspired, sometimes very literally, by ecclesiastical tailoring. Here, among the pink and black suits were tunic-style pieces that borrowed from the wardrobe of the Catholic Church: copes, chasubles and dalmatics. The embroidery and crystal decoration, the filigree made from gold bullion thread, the use of the cross as a recurring emblem in both clothing and jewellery — all this left us in no doubt that we were witnessing clothing possessed of grandeur. One golden brass filigree bodice displayed gemstones and crystals like a piece of body armour. Another bodice, constructed from a white fabric that looks like marble, featured a three-dimensional head of Saint Peter with the keys to the kingdom of heaven. And though some of the more extreme expressions would undoubtedly require quite the occasion to get a wearing, there were plenty of embroidered and embellished jackets and trousers that would do service at any dressy event — though admittedly ear-marking the wearer as someone who enjoys spectacle and theatre. But then the brand's Alta Sartoria is spectacular and theatrical. Those invited to attend are the label's top customers and this cohort decamp annually to whichever Italian city or venue the designers have designated. Last year it was Sardinia, previously it has been Venice and Florence. Alta Sartoria, launched in 2015, meaning literally 'high tailoring', is the male equivalent of what Dolce & Gabbana does for women: Alta Moda ('high fashion'). And like the women who attend those shows (and this week there was one the night before the men's event at Rome's historic Forum), the men at this couture bash place orders for what's on display. Often while the models are actually walking the catwalk. Prices start at about €50,000 and each piece is unique. If you buy one of these outfits you won't ever bump into anyone dressed the same. Not even Erling

Dolce & Gabbana's Alta Sartoria offers up a dazzling blend of faith and fashion in Rome
Alta Moda came to a fitting close last night beneath the sun setting against the imposing Castel Sant'Angelo. Set on the banks of the Tiber, this historic structure was originally built as the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, and later repurposed to be used as a fortress by the popes. To reach it, guests crossed the famed Ponte Sant'Angelo, lined with angelic sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Most recently seen in the Oscar-nominated Conclave, the castle's papal legacy formed the foundation for Dolce & Gabbana's Alta Sartoria men's collection, in the form of a journey through the language of ecclesiastical dress. The show opened with a belted coat embroidered with the red cassocks worn by Catholic cardinals and trimmed in intricate goldwork. This was followed by vestment-inspired tops, crafted in crisp, openwork linen, and paired with flowing satin trousers in cardinal red, green and yellow. A floor-length cape was densely stitched with an image of the castle itself, followed by sleeveless white tops moulded with the faces of the angels from the bridge. Antique altar cloths were transformed into sharply cut suit jackets. Tabards were rendered in inky blue sequins or encrusted with dense silver beadwork, echoing ceremonial mitres. This intricate detailing also adorned long coats and papal-esque capes. The visual language of devotion – itself a fitting metaphor for the reverent craftsmanship on show – was expressed in golden breastplates worn over high-neck white shirts, gem-studded necklaces and brass thurible incense burners swinging from chains. Naturally, as this was Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria, there was no shortage of impeccable suiting: white brocade trimmed with pearls, iridescent black suits with embroidered lapels, sleeveless styles worn with long gloves and oversized gold flower brooches, and looks in muted gold or silver, entirely beaded or traced with pearl matrices. Others were richly brocaded, or embroidered in precious metal thread, fastened with silk fascia sashes. One wisteria-hued jacket shimmered with gold embroidery; another, in shocking fuchsia silk, was edged in pearls. Liturgical velvet capes in gold, midnight blue, and scarlet were blanketed in embroidery or sequins, while a cassock in papal purple with a short pellegrina cape swirled with golden threadwork. The collection was astonishing in its regal detail, a fact fully revealed only when the models assembled on the bridge for the finale. Up close, one suit that appeared to be jacquard, was in fact fully beaded in purple and black bugle beads, a piece that surely took weeks to create. In a collection steeped in sartorial devotion, this look encapsulated its essence. Such craftsmanship is at the heart of Dolce & Gabbana's touring exhibition From the Heart to the Hands, which recently opened in Rome. Celebrating a decade of Alta Moda, it showcases the house's dedication to preserving Italian artisanal know-how. After blockbuster stops in Paris and Milan, the show is set to travel to the United States next, with rumours of future showings in the Middle East. The five-day Dolce & Gabbana Roman spectacle that culminated in Alta Sartoria was nothing short of cinematic, a sweeping ode to couture, craft and culture. Yet amid the grandeur, two notes struck a poignant chord. The eagerly awaited Alta Gioielleria evening was cancelled due to a thunderstorm. And Stefano Gabbana was notably absent, having left early to be with his ailing mother – a quiet reminder of life's deeper rhythms beneath fashion's gilded surface. Still, the show went on. As Domenico Dolce took his bow beneath the castle, fireworks lit up the sky. Later, as guests strolled to dinner via the specially closed-off Spanish Steps, Dolce paused to greet clients with warm embraces and evident affection. The night was, in every sense, a Roman holiday: unforgettable, intimate and touched by a kind of magic no runway can exude.

Cher, 79, shows off her ageless visage as she steps out of Rome hotel ahead of the Dolce & Gabbana show
Cher showed off her incredibly ageless visage as she stepped out of her hotel ahead of the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria show in Rome, Italy, on Tuesday. The Believe hitmaker, 79, cut a stylish figure in a long silver embellished jacket layered over a satin white shirt and leather trousers. She cinched in her waist with a rhinestone belt and accessorised with a stack of silver statement necklaces. Toting her belongings in a jewelled handbag, Cher appeared in great spirits as she headed to her cab to the glitzy event. It comes just days after the singer and her boyfriend looked very much in love as they were spotted leaving a popular watering hole in Rome on Sunday. The star, who had performed the night before at the Dolce and Gabbana party, held her boyfriend's hand as they exited the famous Jackie O nightclub. Cher showed off her incredibly ageless visage as she stepped out of her hotel ahead of the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria show in Rome, Italy, on Tuesday The Believe hitmaker, 78, cut a stylish figure in a long silver embellished jacket layered over a satin white shirt and leather trousers Cher looked relaxed wearing a white jacket and a pair of straight leg jeans with black and white sneakers. Her long, dark hair was styled in loose waves. Edwards, 39, looked dapper in a long white and black animal print shirt over a pair of straight leg jeans and dark shoes. His short blonde hair was closely cropped. The two have been dating for almost three years. The couple appear to be going strong during their loved up vacation in Italy. The pair met for the first time at Paris Fashion Week in October 2022. They were first seen holding hands in public a month later. Edwards, a music executive at Universal Group, shares custody of his son, Slash, five, with ex-partner Amber Rose. According to Rose, the two women get along well. 'I'm very happy that [Alexander is] with Cher because it creates stability for when [our] son goes over there,' she said on The Jason Lee Podcast in March 2024. 'It's not all mayhem and stuff.' She cinched in her waist with a rhinestone belt and accessorised with a stack of silver statement necklaces Toting her belongings in a jewelled handbag, Cher appeared in great spirits as she headed to her cab to the starry event As an older woman, Cher has received more than a little pushback on the difference in her and Edwards' ages, but that doesn't seem to bother the unflappable icon. Cher has dated several younger men over the years, including the late Val Kilmer and later his Top Gun co-star Tom Cruise. In 1986, at age 40, the future Oscar winner a young baker named Rob Camilletti, who was 22 at the time. Camilletti was her plus-one at the Academy Awards in 1988 for Moonstruck. The pair broke up the next year due to the media attention surround their relationship. The Silkwood actress also dated Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora for about a year. The pair went their separate ways in 1990. Amazingly, Cher has been able to remain friends with a good number of her exes. She explained on the Table Manners podcast in December 2023: 'I'm close with all of my exes. I'm really close. 'Yeah. I have a feeling that you have to like someone a lot before you go to bed with them.' Cher and Alexander met for the first time at Paris Fashion Week in October 2022. They were first seen holding hands in public a month later; Pictured in New York City in February Cher has dated a number of younger men, including the late Val Kilmer (left), seen in June 1982, and Richie Sambora, right, seen in 1991 As for her penchant for younger men, Cher explained on The Jennifer Hudson Show in May 2024 it comes partly from necessity. She said: 'The reason I got with young men is because men my age are older—well, now they're all dead—but before, they were always terrified to approach me, and younger men—they were raised by women like me.' Back in February, Cher's status as one of the world's most legendary performers of stage and screen shone through once again when one of her iconic costumes sold for more than two-times than originally estimated at auction. With over 200 lots up for grabs during the Julien's Auctions Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit, based in Beverly Hills, bidding turned into a fierce battle at times. One of the highlights of the glitzy event turned out to be the Cher, stage-worn If I Could Turn Back Time costume, designed by Bob Mackie, that sparked controversy back in the day. The revealing ensemble, which was first featured in the music video for her hit 1989 song, features a black, figure-hugging bodysuit, also dubbed a catsuit, with mesh cutouts, that was often paired with a black leather jacket and knee-high boots. Originally estimated to sell for between $60,000 and $80,000, a 'heated bidding war' erupted during the exhilarating live and online auction, ultimately resulting in the Cher ensemble selling for a whopping $162,500. After debuting in the If I Could Turn Back Time music video, which was shot on board of the battleship USS Missouri, where it showed her straddling a cannon and her tattooed buttocks, the revealing number set off a wave of controversy. Cher's iconic, stage-worn If I Could Turn Back Time costume just sold for a whopping $162,500, which was more than two-times than estimated at Juliens Auctions In fact, some military personnel condemned the video, directed by the late Marty Callner, while other family groups protested against its broadcast, because they deemed it offensive for the Navy. In the wake of those protests many television networks refused to show it due to the singer's revealing outfit, including MTV in July 1989. Eventually the massive music television network amended the move by allowing the video to be shown only after 9 pm, but by then Cher was already reaping the rewards of the controversy as a must see. The pop rock, or soft rock, song was written specifically for Cher by Diane Warren, who produced it in collaboration with Guy Roche. Featuring instrumentation from guitars, piano and drums, it received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who applauded its overall production and Cher's vocal performance. Some critics and fans even considered it to be a highlight of her Heart Of Stone (1989) studio album, which was the nineteenth at that point in her career. Commercially, Heart of Stone turned out to be a milestone for her when it reached number 10 in the United States, which was a first for her as a solo artist.

Inside Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos' Wedding: New Details on Dress Designer, Location, ‘Multi-Day Affair'
When Lauren Sánchez marries billionaire Jeff Bezos next month in a lavish destination wedding in Italy, she will be wearing custom Dolce & Gabbana couture looks made to match every event during the star-studded, multi-day celebration, a source tells Us Weekly exclusively. "It will be a big wedding," the source said, and "a very Italian wedding." The exclusive details may also recall Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker's May 2022 nuptials in Italy, where the bride, groom, and entire wedding party were outfitted in the Italian fashion label. Of course, Sánchez and the Amazon founder's forthcoming, high-profile celebration have already caught the public's attention. Sánchez's older brother, Paul, previously described it to TMZ as an event that could rival Princess Diana's iconic 'wedding of the century' in both scale and magnificence. Rumored wedding attendees include celebrities Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Eva Longoria, who were all seen at Sánchez's recent bachelorette weekend festivities in Paris. Lauren Sanchez Does Billionaire Bloomcore in Expensive Ab-Baring Look for Bachelorette Weekend in Paris Sánchez, 55, is already a Dolce & Gabbana devotee, having chosen the designer for significant, sentimental events, whether by 61-year-old Bezos' side on his birthday in a sheer black confection or sitting front row in ethereal white lace at the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria show in Italy to cheer on her son, Nikko, when he walked the designer's runway in July 2024. Before Nikko's turn on the catwalk, Sánchez was photographed arriving at Italy's Cagliari Airport in head-to-toe Dolce & Gabbana. Walking next to Bezos, she looked every inch the 'proud mom,' as she put it on Instagram, in a lemon-yellow dress reminiscent of the Italian Riviera. The philanthropist and Emmy Award-winning journalist consistently gravitates towards designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana for milestone occasions, which makes them a natural fit for her wedding couturiers. The news that Sánchez will be a Dolce & Gabbana bride is the latest thread weaving together a beautiful narrative between home, family and high fashion. Sánchez's wedding wardrobe will mirror the picturesque setting, whether it's a corseted gown that commands all eyes at the altar or a boudoir-inspired LBD at the reception. Molto bella, indeed!
