Standout defensive player enters transfer portal to leave UNC football
After a breakout sophomore season when he recorded 6.5 sacks, linebacker Amare Campbell has entered the NCAA transfer portal with plans to leave North Carolina's football team.
At 6-feet and 230 pounds, Campbell finished last season with 76 tackles for the Tar Heels. That included 45 solo tackles. He finished second on the team in both categories last season. He was also second on the Tar Heels in sacks as well as tackles for loss (10.5).

Campbell enrolled at UNC early in spring 2023 to take part in spring practices ahead of his freshman season. He played 11 games that fall, getting his first start against West Virginia in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. He followed that by starting 13 games for the Tar Heels last season under coach Mack Brown, who was fired in November before UNC hired six-time Super Bowl winning head coach Bill Belichick in December.
The Tar Heels wrapped up their first spring practice work under Belichick on April 12.
UNC's sacks leader last season, defensive end Beau Atkinson, has also entered the transfer portal since the end of spring practice.
