Three Arrested After Violent Assault On Two Sikh Taxi Drivers In Wolverhampton

Three individuals have been taken into custody following a violent racist assault on two elderly Sikh men outside Wolverhampton Railway Station last Friday, with British Transport Police treating the incident as a racially-motivated hate crime. Disturbing footage of the attack, which occurred on August 15th at approximately 1:45 PM BST, has circulated widely on social media platforms. The video depicts one elderly victim lying on the ground with his turban removed and placed beside him, while the second victim endures repeated kicks and punches from the attackers. A witness filming the incident can be heard identifying the perpetrators as white men and expressing shock at the unprovoked violence. Both victims, who work as local taxi drivers, were hospitalized for treatment following the assault but have since been discharged. Law enforcement officials have arrested three suspects aged 17, 19, and 25, who have been released on bail while investigations continue. The attack has sparked outrage within the Sikh community and prompted calls for swift justice from political leaders. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal condemned the attack on social media, emphasizing that the forced removal of a Sikh's turban represents a particularly grave violation targeting the community's religious identity. He characterized the assault as an attack on a community that promotes universal wellbeing and called upon West Midlands Police and the UK Home Office to take decisive action. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring similarly expressed dismay at the incident, describing it as a troubling blow to intercommunity relations. Both leaders have urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to address the matter with British authorities to ensure the protection of the Sikh diaspora. The UK-based Sikh Federation provided additional context, explaining that both victims were taxi drivers working outside the station when three men emerged from the railway facility demanding transportation to Oldbury. According to the organization's statement, the drivers explained the proper booking procedure, but the men became increasingly aggressive and abusive when informed they needed to use the official taxi rank system. The federation noted that the attackers showed no interest in following proper protocols and instead escalated their verbal abuse before resorting to physical violence. This incident represents another concerning example of hate crimes targeting the Sikh community in the United Kingdom, highlighting ongoing challenges faced by minority communities in maintaining their safety and dignity while practicing their faith and earning their livelihoods.

Punjab sees steepest decline in PM-Kisan beneficiaries with 49 per cent drop in five years

CHANDIGARH: Punjab has recorded the steepest fall in the country in the number of beneficiaries under the PM-Kisan scheme, with figures dropping by nearly 49 per cent over the past five years. Beneficiaries fell from 23.01 lakh between December 2019 and March 2020, the highest-ever recorded in the state when farmers received Rs 466.47 crore, to just 11.34 lakh between April and July 2025, who received Rs 387.76 crore. Recently, in reply to an unstarred question raised by Congress MP from Ludhiana, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Ram Nath Thakur stated that in the financial year 2025-26, Rs 63,500 crore had been allocated for the PM-Kisan scheme. 'The 20th instalment of the PM-Kisan scheme was released on August 2, 2025 and more than 9.71 crore beneficiaries received benefits amounting to more than Rs 20,500 crore. Out of this, more than 11.34 lakh beneficiaries from Punjab received the benefit amounting to Rs 387.76 crore,' the reply stated. It added that a farmer-centric digital infrastructure has ensured the benefits of the scheme reach all farmers across the country without the involvement of intermediaries. 'Maintaining absolute transparency in registering and verifying beneficiaries, the Government of India has disbursed over Rs 3.90 lakh crore through 20 instalments since the inception of the scheme,' it noted.

Punjab: Warring vows pro-farmer land law if Congress voted to power in 2027

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Tuesday pledged that the party, if voted to power in 2027, will enact a state law to safeguard farmers' land rights, modelled on the 2013 Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act introduced by the UPA government under Dr Manmohan Singh. Farmers participating in a tractor rally, demanding official withdrawal of the land pooling policy, in Sangrur's Dhuri on Tuesday. (HT) In a statement, Warring said the proposed legislation would mandate the consent of at least 80% of landowners/farmers for any acquisition, along with compensation at double the market rate in urban areas and four times in rural areas. He also criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government for attempting to acquire nearly 50,000 acres of farmland without proper consent or compensation. Warring claimed that the recent withdrawal of the land pooling policy by the AAP was not voluntary, but a result of a stay order imposed by the Punjab and Haryana high court. The Punjab government knew that it did not stand any chance to defend the land pooling policy, as it was violative of the Land Acquisition Act 2013, so it beat a retreat, he said, adding that AAP tried to coerce farmers by using police force. Bajwa demands apology from Mann, Kejriwal for harassing farmers Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa has demanded a public apology from chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal for the mental and physical harassment caused to farmers by the now-scrapped Land Pooling Policy. 'They now boast about scrapping the policy for farmers' benefit, but can they justify why it was brought in the first place? This was a calculated attempt to weaken Punjab's farming backbone,' he said. Farmers demand official withdrawal of policy in assembly Hundreds of farmers participated in a massive tractor march in Sangrur's Dhuri, demanding a formal, official scrapping of the land pooling policy in the state assembly. Protesters stated they will not stop their demonstrations until a written assurance was provided, as only a formal repeal will prevent the policy from being reintroduced at a later date. The sentiment was same in Sohian village, located approximately 4 km from Sangrur city, where 568 acres of land were targeted for acquisition under the now-suspended scheme. Villagers had put up a poster at the entrance of the village warning government officials against entering. They have not removed it even now, which they say will remain until the policy is officially withdrawn. Manjeet Singh Gharachon, a leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Ugrahan, said the government's statement was just a move 'made out of fear of farmers'. He stated the announcement held no weight without a formal cabinet meeting and suspension. 'The government can anytime acquire the land on its power. How can we believe this is actually in practice?' he said. When contacted about the ongoing protests, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the state government had withdrawn the policy, honouring the farmers' demands. He urged the protesting parties to respect the withdrawal announcement, stating that the official procedure can take time.

Punjabis don't accept divisive, anti-national ideology: Warring

In the bastion of Khalistan sympathiser and jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Saturday lashed out at Khalistan supporters, stating that divisive and anti-national ideology was not acceptable to Punjabis. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring addressing the party's conference at Baba Bakala, Amritsar. (HT) While addressing a political conference organised by the Congress on the occasion of Rakhar Punya at Baba Bakala, he strongly opposed those trying to raise the slogan of Khalistan in Punjab. 'We must fight against the Centre for Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat, but only while remaining a part of our own country, not by separating from it,' he said, while emphasising that Punjab was the strongest pillar of India. He also lashed out at the AAP government, accusing it of turning Punjab into a 'gangland', and pushing the state into complete chaos and lawlessness: 'The economy has completely collapsed, with the debt rising to nearly ₹5.25 lakh crore. At the same time, law and order has reached its worst state, and gangsters are ruling the roost.' He added that in the last three and a half years of AAP's governance, there had been no new investment in the state. In fact, many businesses had left Punjab due to security concerns. He said a climate of fear prevailed in the state, and people felt scared and anxious. During his speech, Warring reiterated his party's strong opposition to the AAP government's land pooling policy. He said on the one hand, it was a scheme to loot farmers' land and on the other hand, it had the potential to destroy the state's agricultural economy. He made it clear that the Congress party will never allow this policy to be implemented. Former deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, former minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, former MP Jasbir Singh Dimpa, Sukhwinder Danny, Bhagwant Pal Singh Sachar and other Congress leaders were also present at the conference.
