MIAA, New Balance ink five-year deal to host major championships at The Track at New Balance
Advertisement The Track at New Balance, opened in the developing Boston Landing area in 2022, has quickly earned a reputation as one of the premier indoor track venues in the country. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up As well as professional meets such as the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, the Track has become the annual host of the New Balance Indoor Nationals, the most prestigious indoor high school meet on the calendar. The facility also staged the 2024 NCAA Division 1 track and field championships. Along with its hydraulically banked, six-lane track with stands accommodating 5,000 spectators, the Track includes a dedicated throwing and field event area, basketball and volleyball courts, 24,000 square feet of warm-up area — crucial when thousands of high schoolers pour into the building for major championships — and more off-track amenities. Advertisement The result is a facility that continues to pick up the biggest events on the indoor track schedule at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. 'You want to make it so that when an athlete comes here, he or she feels comfortable,' said Jim Davis, New Balance chairman, when the Track opened in 2022, 'they've got everything they need — and the track is designed to be quick.' Can they shoot 45 percent from 3-point range again? Will six guys score in double figures? Can Jaylen and Derrick continue as the finest combination of Brown and White since humanity figured out how to perfectly toast a marshmallow? Can Advertisement Perhaps they don't have to be, seeing as there was a 25-point margin of error in that Game 5 win and Boston certainly doesn't need to win by 25 to stay alive. A single point will do. Emma Healy can be reached at

The cheering starts long before Wellesley — or even the starting line. The marathon tradition you might not know about.
It's a little less screaming than you'll find in Wellesley and a little more clapping. But it breaks the tension, introducing a little fun and levity to the start of such an important day. 'It's just one more thing that is special about Boston,' said Canadian Rory Linkletter, who ran a personal best of 2:07:02 to finish sixth. 'I said it in the days leading up, the Boston Marathon is to running what the Masters is to golf. Advertisement 'It has so much history and so many small things that make it different and separate it. It's amazing.' The Boston Marathon morning walkout, one of the coolest parts of Marathon Monday. — Amin Touri (@Amin_Touri) Every competitor has a different approach to race morning. As the athletes are corralled into a meeting space at the Fairmont before they head to the buses that will take them to Hopkinton, some are silent and stoic. Others keep it light. 'I'm more of a social person in the morning before the race, I like to keep my mind loose and off the race,' said Linkletter. 'I'm not too stoic and locked in, I like to have fun and stay loose. 'The marathon's long. You can be too hyper-focused, in my opinion, for too long.' Advertisement 'There's a [Joan] Didion quote — I'll butcher it — but she said something like, 'It's hard to be emotional with your head in a paper bag,' " Linden said later. 'It's hard to be emotional grinding out 26.2 miles.' Some keep it cool amid the applause, but some of the athletes that were headed for the most successful days were all smiles in the morning. Kenya's Hellen Obiri was grinning ear-to-ear on her way out the door and Ethiopia's Yalemzerf Yehualaw couldn't stifle a smile — both finished on the podium. A late arrival to the procession was 'It was really fun,' Mantz said. 'My wife was there, gave her a hug and a kiss, and she wished me good luck. It was exciting. 'Everyone's different about the morning. I like to talk to people, I had a lot of friends running in the men's elite field, training partners in the masters and women's elite field too. It's fun to be there with everyone.' Advertisement 'It's good to start the day crying,' Feller joked. 'I think what these athletes do is remarkable. They work so hard, they run so fast, and it's hard for a lot of us to comprehend. And so I think to be able to celebrate them up close and personal like that, and send them to the start with a lot of love . . . I think it's the best. I think that tradition is so cool.' It's over soon after it starts, the applause slowly fading as the last of the elites walks through the Dartmouth Street exit of the Fairmont Copley, a nerve-wracking bus ride to Hopkinton and a much more grueling trip back ahead of them. But for a moment, the pressure and anxiety are broken by Marathon Monday's first little moment of joy. Amin Touri can be reached at

Des Linden, 2018 champion, says she will retire after final Boston Marathon
'I made my debut at 26.2 on your roads in 2007 and fell in love — with the distance and with the Boston Marathon,' Linden wrote. 'Three years later, we were in it together as you lifted me up through the Newton Hills, carried me as l turned Right on Hereford and Left on Boylston, and brought me within two Heartbreaking seconds of victory. Advertisement 'But you never gave up on me, inviting me to keep showing up; hell, you embraced the fight, because Boston knows grit. The victory in 2018 wasn't just mine, it was ours.' Linden's 2018 win, claimed in swirling winds and driving rain in a race of attrition, made her the first American to win the women's open race since 1985. It made her a legend in Boston, the pinnacle of a marathon career that featured two trips to the Olympics and more top American finishes than you could count. 'People say you should go out on top, and that's what I'm doing — because choosing to race my final professional marathon in Boston is indeed going out on top," Linden continued. 'I hope you enjoy one last show. Thanks for all the years and all the cheers.' Advertisement Amin Touri can be reached at

Maine Celtics' JD Davison named G League MVP
A second-round pick of the Celtics in 2022, Davison has had little opportunity to see the floor with the big-league club, logging just 156 minutes over three seasons. Maine is taking on the Westchester Knicks in the second round of the G League playoffs, with a single-elimination contest in New York on Thursday. Advertisement Amin Touri can be reached at
