EA cancels Black Panther game and closes studio developing it

EA is cancelling its Black Panther game and closing the studio creating it, Cliffhanger Games, as part of a larger round of layoffs at the company, IGN reports. The third-person action-adventure game was originally announced in July 2023 as one of several Marvel projects being developed at EA studios. IGN writes that a smaller number of people are being laid off than the previous round of cuts that impacted Titanfall developer Respawn, but EA is still eliminating roles outside of Cliffhanger, including people on the publisher's "mobile and central teams." EA is reportedly telling staff that the layoffs are a way to "sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities." As of right now, those "opportunities" include an Iron Man game in development at EA Motive, the next Star Wars Jedi game from Respawn, and new entries in a few key franchises, like The Sims, Battlefield, Skate and Apex Legends. Beyond that, the company has EA Sports and the next Mass Effect game, though Bioware has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs since 2023, so there's uncertainty there, too. In a similar way to how it approached Bioware's restructuring, IGN reports that EA is trying to find roles for at least some Cliffhanger Games staff in other parts of the company. Engadget has contacted EA for comment and will update this article if we hear back. EA growing disinterest in licensed games as been public since at least February 2024, when CEO Andrew Wilson announced that the company was "moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry." The company recently announced a new strategy game using the Star Wars license — Star Wars Zero Company — but that seems more like an outlier than the norm. EA's Black Panther game wasn't the only project featuring the character — Amy Hennig's Marvel 19943: Rise of Hydra hasn't been cancelled yet — but it does seems strange the company gave up so easily. Black Panther made over $1.3 billion during its original run in theaters. It seems entirely possible the same audience that enjoyed the movie would show up for a new game featuring their favorite Marvel character.

Iron Man game details leaked by EA as Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra delayed

A major Marvel title has been delayed to next year, as details emerge around EA's upcoming Iron Man game via a job listing. It's easy to forget about the huge number of Marvel games in development, as there are so few tangible details about any of them. Beyond Insomniac's Wolverine, we have a standalone Black Panther game from Cliffhanger Games, an Iron Man title from EA Motive, Arkane Lyon's Blade, throwback brawler Marvel Cosmic Invasion, and Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra from Uncharted director Amy Hennig. While the latter was due to be released later this year, developer Skydance New Media has announced it has now been delayed to early 2026. 'Taking this additional time will allow us to add more polish, and make sure we give you the best possible experience, and one that lives up to our vision,' read the brief statement from Skydance Games. 'We have some exciting things in store and look forward to sharing more soon!' A trailer for Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra was released last year. The action game will revolve around four heroes, namely Captain America, Black Panther, Howling Commandos member Gabriel Jones, and Wakandan leader Nanali, in an original story. Considering we haven't seen any gameplay from the project yet, the delay isn't exactly surprising. A 2026 launch could benefit the game timing wise too, as it might get a bump from the release of crossover film Avengers: Doomsday in May next year. However, that does start to stray perilously close to the release date of GTA 6, which is currently set for May 26. Beyond Marvel: 1943: Rise Of Hydra, a job listing for EA Motive's Iron Man has outed new details about the single-player action game. As noted in the level designer advert, EA Motive is looking for someone who can 'design and build major single-player levels, within the project's creative constraints'. More Trending While it isn't stated explicitly, this description suggests the game could be level-based. However, a prior job listing on the same game described it as an 'open world action adventure AAA title', so it's unclear if plans have changed, or if it's simply referring to levels within the open world. The listing also calls for 'experience in single-player action RPG games', which is the first mention we've had of any role-playing mechanics (even if it will likely just mean some sort of skill tree. Development on Iron Man is being led by Olivier Proulx, who previously worked on the acclaimed Guardians Of The Galaxy game for Square Enix. No footage has been shown, yet but the studio apparently hit a 'major internal milestone' on the project last year. With so many unknowns, we could hear more about both projects at Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025. However, EA Motive is also working on the next Battlefield, which is set to launch before March 2026, so any news about Iron Man might be held back till after that. Skydance's 'Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra' Delayed To Early 2026

Skydance's upcoming narrative-driven adventure game, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra , has been delayed to early 2026. Breaking the news on its social media pages, Skydance stated that the they were 'taking [the] additional time to add more polish', while also teasing 'exciting things in store', possibly hinting at the release of a gameplay trailer in the coming months. Not much is known currently about the game, which received a brief cinematic story trailer in early 2024 at Epic Games' State of Unreal event at the Game Developers Conference. Led by Amy Hennig, best known for her work writing and directing the Uncharted series, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is set to follow in the same action-adventure vein, with a story inspired by the 2010 Marvel Comics limited series Captain America / Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers . Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game is set in occupied Paris during World War II, with an original story following Captain America as he forms an uneasy alliance with Azzuri, the Black Panther of the time period, as they work to prevent the rise of the terrorist organisation Hydra. Other characters include Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos and a Wakandan spy named Nanali, with all four being playable. Originally slated for Holiday 2025, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is now delayed to early 2026. As the first major project by Skydance New Media, the game is described as 'a narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game' and will be developed in collaboration with Marvel Games. With industry legend Henning at the helm, the game has the potential to be an epic single-player experience, the likes of Uncharted , but only time will tell if this will be the case, or if the studio will give in to greed by implementing a live-service model similar to that of 2020's ill-fated Marvel's Avengers , finger's crossed that its the former. Marvel's WWII action game has been delayed

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, the new Marvel action-adventure game, has been delayed. The game was originally slated to release this year but Skydance New Media, the studio developing the game, has announced it will instead come out some time in early 2026. 'Taking this additional time will allow us to add more polish,' Skydance wrote of the delay on their X account. Marvel 1943 was first teaseed in 2021 as the first project under Skydance New Media, a new gaming initiative spearheaded by parent company studio Skydance Media known for films like Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. Skydance appointed former Naughty Dog creative director and Uncharted writer Amy Hennig to lead the studio. It's billed as an action-adventure game taking place in World War II featuring multiple playable characters including Captain America, Black Panther (T'Challa's grandfather Azzuri), Gabriel Jones (a member of Captain America's Howling Commandos team,) and Nanali, a Wakandan spy. We have one brief trailer from the game, released during last year's state of Unreal address but no other details. Skydance New Media is also working on a Star Wars game.
