'Get Out Of The Way': Shastri's Take On Akash Deep-Ben Duckett Send-Off Incident

Last Updated: Akash Deep's send-off to Ben Duckett in the fifth Test at The Oval sparked controversy. Ravi Shastri and Michael Atherton stressed avoiding physical contact in cricket. Akash Deep and Ben Duckett were involved in a controversial moment that has taken over the conversation during the fifth Test of the five-match Test series for the Anderson-Gavaskar Trophy at The Oval. Ben Duckett received a notable send-off after his dismissal by Akash Deep, who put an arm around the English batter's shoulders as he walked off the field. Ahead of the start of play on the third day, former India coach and player Ravi Shastri and former England cricketer Michael Atherton weighed in on the incident. 'You imagine doing that to Viv Richards. I would have hated that if a bowler puts his arms around me, having just dismissed me, stay out of the way," Michael Atherton said on SKY Sports. 'If Athers had put his hand around me, I would say 'get out of the way'," Ravi Shastri replied. Why Akash Deep Had His Arm Around Ben Duckett? 'But I mean, it's a serious point actually, that as I say, it seemed good natured, and I like to give cricketers maximum leeway on the field, because it is an emotional, passionate game. I like to see them getting stuck in I don't like the match referees getting involved, but it's a non contact sport. Something like that will end in problems, so I think the match referee has to stamp that out," Atherton added. When asked if the situation had escalated, Shatri said: 'No physical contact, because it what it can lead to. I mean, Duckett, at that moment of time, might have been thinking something else. Another player, you know, with a feisty temperament, and you know, would have liked it, and could have done something which he would have regretted. You know, just because it's being watched by millions around the globe and the match referee, and where the match referee will be forced to take action because of the rules." On Saturday, after Akask was dismissed, Ben walked over and the pair had their hands over each others' shoulders. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. First Look Of Lord's Pitch For India vs England 3rd Test Out. And, It's Scary. Images Inside

The Anderson-Gavaskar Trophy now shifts to Lord's. After India's historic win in Edgbaston, for the first time in 58 years, the five-match series is level 1-1. While in Edgbaston, the Indian cricket team was without Jasprit Bumrah, in Lord's the pace superstar will return. In India's last outing at Lord's in 2021, they beat England by 151 runs. According to a report, after Edgbaston loss, the England team management is eager for a pitch that aids its pacers. The first look of Lord's pitch, posted by several social media handles on Tuesday, showed a green pitch which has been watered very well. Two days before the match, it's a given that the grass on the pitch is a lot more pronounced than on the first day of the match day. But going by England's recent statement, it seems a green pitch may be in the offing to aid returning pacer Jofra Archer. The two pitches used so far in Leeds and Edgbaston aided the batters. 48 hours to go. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇳 — Lord's Cricket Ground (@HomeOfCricket) July 8, 2025 The first look of the Lord's pitch for the 3rd test between India and England. - The wicket with a bit more pace and a bit more bounce is getting ready to tease Indian batting. Bazball is coming with formula B. #INDvsENG — Ahmad Haseeb (@iamAhmadhaseeb) July 8, 2025 JASPRIT BUMRAH AT THE LORD'S. PITCH FOR LORD's TEST! #INDvsENGTest — Cricable (@cricable1) July 8, 2025 According to report by news agency PTI, stung by their 336-run thrashing at Edgbaston, England have requested a pitch with "plenty of life in it" as they look to unleash returning pacers Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson in the third Test against India at Lord's, starting July 10. Archer is set for a long-awaited Test comeback after persistent elbow and back injuries that kept him out since February 2021, while Atkinson, who missed the second Test due to a hamstring issue, is also expected to bolster the pace attack. England coach Brendon McCullum said he wants "something with a bit more pace, a bit more bounce, and maybe a little bit of sideways" from MCC head groundsman Karl McDermott, taking cue from last month's World Test Championship final where Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada found significant seam movement. "It'll be a blockbuster either way, but I think it's going to set up for a cracker – especially if there's plenty of life in it (the pitch)," McCullum was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo. England had earlier preferred flatter pitches to suit their aggressive style of play. While more bounce and carry at Leeds aided their five-wicket win in the first Test, the Edgbaston surface offered sub-continental conditions, allowing Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj to extract far more movement than England pacers as the visitors levelled the series 1-1.
