Akash Deep's send-off to Ben Duckett in the fifth Test at The Oval sparked controversy. Ravi Shastri and Michael Atherton stressed avoiding physical contact in cricket.
Akash Deep and Ben Duckett were involved in a controversial moment that has taken over the conversation during the fifth Test of the five-match Test series for the Anderson-Gavaskar Trophy at The Oval.
Ben Duckett received a notable send-off after his dismissal by Akash Deep, who put an arm around the English batter's shoulders as he walked off the field.
Ahead of the start of play on the third day, former India coach and player Ravi Shastri and former England cricketer Michael Atherton weighed in on the incident.
'You imagine doing that to Viv Richards. I would have hated that if a bowler puts his arms around me, having just dismissed me, stay out of the way," Michael Atherton said on SKY Sports.
'If Athers had put his hand around me, I would say 'get out of the way'," Ravi Shastri replied.
Why Akash Deep Had His Arm Around Ben Duckett?
'But I mean, it's a serious point actually, that as I say, it seemed good natured, and I like to give cricketers maximum leeway on the field, because it is an emotional, passionate game. I like to see them getting stuck in I don't like the match referees getting involved, but it's a non contact sport. Something like that will end in problems, so I think the match referee has to stamp that out," Atherton added.
When asked if the situation had escalated, Shatri said: 'No physical contact, because it what it can lead to. I mean, Duckett, at that moment of time, might have been thinking something else. Another player, you know, with a feisty temperament, and you know, would have liked it, and could have done something which he would have regretted. You know, just because it's being watched by millions around the globe and the match referee, and where the match referee will be forced to take action because of the rules."
On Saturday, after Akask was dismissed, Ben walked over and the pair had their hands over each others' shoulders.

Not Virat Kohli or MS Dhoni! Sanju Samson Calls India Captain As His Cricketing Idol

Last Updated: Sanju Samson, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, admires Rohit Sharma as his idol. India's ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, may no longer feature regularly across all three formats, but the legacy he has built remains a source of admiration and inspiration. He has called time on his Test and T20I careers, focusing solely now on the ODI World Cup 2027. However, he is still missed by many, not just those outside the Indian dressing room, but also within it. Sanju Samson, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, admires Rohit as his idol. The Kerala cricketer recently appeared in a podcast with former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, where he said he idolised Rohit. On the show, Ashwin asked, '(Who is) Your all-time cricketing idol, and one modern player that you get excited to watch, as a fan?" Sanju replied, 'That's a big question. Uh… Rohit Sharma." Speaking about the modern-day player he gets excited to watch, Samson named 'Chinna Paiyan' Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The 14-year-old opening batter made his IPL debut earlier this year, replacing an injured Samson in the Rajasthan Royals line-up. He quickly rose to fame with his extraordinary strokeplay and a sizzling century against the Gujarat Titans, becoming the youngest ever to do so in the league's history. He played 7 games in IPL 2025 and scored 252 runs, averaging 36. 'Yeah, I saw him hit one for a six. I was thinking that the little guy got lucky, but it kept on going. The quality of the shots also really shocked me," Samson admitted to Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter's YouTube show, Kutti Stories With Ash. And Samson and Ashwin weren't the only players in awe either. 'I saw Jos Buttler talking to Jofra Archer about it. About how it was to get smashed around by a 14-year-old in the nets," Ashwin said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Team India visited England dressing room after Oval win, ‘didn't overdo' celebrations; chat with Stokes and co. revealed

India's thrilling five-run victory over England at the Oval sealed a dramatic 2-2 Test series draw, with Mohammed Siraj emerging as the hero in a nail-biting finale. England needed just 35 runs with four wickets in hand on the last day but crumbled under immense pressure as Siraj dismantled their lineup, claiming three wickets for nine runs on the morning to finish with impressive innings figures of 5/104. "Not really. We didn't overdo anything," Nair said when asked about the celebrations in the dressing room after the match, before revealing that the side visited the English dressing room. "We had a good chat, both teams were respectful of the fact that it was a great series," Nair said. The Indian batter also reacted to England's head coach Brendon McCullum labelling the five-Test series as the 'greatest' in recent memory. "Brendon McCullum mentioned it was the greatest Test series to be played in recent memory. As players, we didn't feel the magnitude of it during the matches, but looking back at how the moments panned out, as a group, we feel we achieved something special," said Nair. A mixed outing Karun Nair had a bittersweet outing in England. While he came back to the Indian Test team after eight years on the back of solid performances in the domestic circuit, Nair failed to replicate a similar consistency on English soil. While he did get strong starts to his innings more often than not, the conversion remained an issue. It also led to him being dropped for the fourth Test before Rishabh Pant's injury forced a change in combination, bringing him back for the fifth. It was then, when Nair played a crucial 57-run knock in the first innings that helped India put a competitive 224-run score. India don't play a Test series until October when West Indies visit the country for two matches. While Nair didn't live up to the expectations, the key knock in the final Test might have just raised hopes to retain his place in the squad.

‘It will be a super move for CSK if they let go of R Ashwin': Krishnamachari Srikkanth backs spin legend's exit

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth backed Chennai Super Kings to let go of R Ashwin, who is rumoured to have sought a release from the five-time champion side only a season after his glittery reunion with the franchise following a Rs 9.75 crore auction deal. The Indian Express had reported that the former India all-rounder has gained interest from a couple of franchises and has had talks with CSK over his future as a player. But what is adding to the intrigue is the fact that Ashwin is currently also serving as the head of CSK's High Performance Centre and Super Kings Academy However, Srikkanth backed Ashwin's exit for the good for CSK after his underwhelming reunion with MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja last season. 'Actually I am with CSK and if they do it, it will be a super move. I think they can muster up around 42 crores and with the youngsters who performed well at the end of the season, they can form a good side,' Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. While Srikkath recognised the legendary Ashwin's qualities, he exhorted that franchise cricket remains results-driven. Ashwin had one of his poorest IPL seasons earlier this year, picking up only seven wickets in nine matches at a 40.42 average. 'They thought it was a good pick, but unfortunately, you've got to understand that it's franchise cricket at the end of the day and not Tamil Nadu cricket. Yes, all of us admire him for his records, he has done brilliantly for IPL, CSK, India, and Tamil Nadu. But that apart, you have to win championships. The last two years CSK have not qualified for the playoffs,' Srikkanth said. Srikkanth also added that no cricketer in India is indispensable, citing Ashwin's mid-series Test retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024. 'Even Washington Sundar was preferred over R Ashwin in Australia. The point is that he's had a brilliant career but this is franchise cricket and this is bound to happen. It's corporate cricket — what can you do? It's the same corporate cricket that gives you a lot of money,' he added.
