Montreal, Chicago look to turn things around

(Photo credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images) Two struggling sides aim to get on the winning track when CF Montreal hosts the Chicago Fire on Saturday. Montreal (3-14-6, 15 points) is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, extending its MLS winless streak to three games (0-2-1) after a rare positive stretch in which it had won two of three. The Canadian side held their own against the Supporters' Shield leaders for much of the 90 minutes. They continued to push after conceding the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute and on several occasions came close to pulling level only to be denied by stellar saves from Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake (as well as the post). 'When you go toe to toe with the best of the best in the league, it's something you're proud of, but at the same time we're not satisfied,' defender Joel Waterman said. 'I don't want the boys to feel satisfied whatsoever. One thing we can't fault is the effort (Wednesday) and against a really good team. We have another game on Saturday so we'll try and learn a lot like always and we'll move forward.' Montreal's inability to capitalize on its chances has been an issue for much of the season, with just 20 goals through 23 games. They rank 21st in MLS with 95 on-target scoring attempts, and the 346 free kicks they've been awarded are fourth most in the league. 'There is a bit of frustration, but we have to look forward, try to keep it in the past and work on the mistakes,' Montreal interim coach Marco Donadel said. They've tightened up defensively in their past two games but will face a Chicago side that has scored the third-most goals in MLS (42). While the Fire (8-9-5, 29 points) have had little trouble finding the back of the net, they've also struggled to keep it out of their own. They've conceded 40 goals, fourth most in the league and just three fewer than Montreal. Chicago has won just once in its past six games (1-4-1) after settling for a draw in its most recent outing against Atlanta United on Wednesday. The Fire grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second minute and went ahead 2-1 in the 79th minute, but a goal by Atlanta in second-half stoppage time left them with a single point after the final whistle. 'It's a point that feels like a loss, right?' Chicago coach Gregg Berhalter said. 'I think we played well enough to win a game. ... Third game in eight days, and the guys have been grinding, and you see the effort they put in today to come in here and dominate the game like that -- and (they) deserved to win.' Philip Zinckernagel tallied his 10th goal of the season and has scored or assisted in a club-record nine straight road games. He's one away from tying Josef Martinez for the MLS record.

Evan Bush secures Columbus' first clean sheet since March and the Crew beat the Union 1-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Mohamed Farsi scored in first-half stoppage time, Evan Bush secured Columbus' first clean sheet since March, and the Crew beat the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Sunday night for their third straight victory. Columbus (10-3-7), which is unbeaten in four straight games, had gone 14 matches since its last clean sheet on March 22 against New York City FC. Philadelphia (12-4-4) had its club-record 11-game unbeaten streak come to an end. On the lone goal, Lassi Lappalainen ran down the left sideline for a through ball and fed it across the goal for Farsi's one-touch finish at the far post. Philadelphia had several good scoring chances, the last when Kai Wagner's free kick found the head of Jesús Bueno but it went just wide in second-half stoppage time. It was a physical start to the match with Alejandro Bedoya earning a yellow card 10 seconds into the game. The game was also delayed at halftime due to weather. Goalkeeper Andre Blake returned for Philadelphia after missing significant time due to an injury and international duty with Jamaica. ___ AP soccer:

Jamaica rally past Guadeloupe in Gold Cup

Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake makes a save during the match against Guadeloupe today. (AP pic) SAN JOSE : Leon Bailey and Jonathan Russell scored shortly before halftime, leading Jamaica to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Guadeloupe today in a Concacaf Gold Cup match at San Jose, California. Guadeloupe jumped on top thanks to a goal from Thierry Ambrose in the 32nd minute, but they couldn't maintain the lead. The result was needed for Jamaica (1-1-0, 3 points), which lost its opening match in Group C to Guatemala 1-0 on Monday. Later today, Guatemala was set to face Panama, who earned a 5-2 win over Guadeloupe (0-2-0, 0 points) in their Group C opener. In the 41st minute, Warner Brown's square pass across the top of the 18-yard box set up Bailey for a left-footed shot from just above the penalty spot. Bailey fired the ball into the net to the right of Guadeloupe goalkeeper Brice Cognard to level the score at 1-1. Jamaica moved in front in the fourth minute of first half stoppage-time. Demarai Gray dribbled into the box from the left flank and delivered a cross that Russell headed in on one bounce. Ambrose's goal was the result of a well-worked corner kick routine, as he took a pass in the 18-yard box from Noah Cadiou and rolled the ball in the bottom left corner. Jamaica will face Panama on Wednesday in Austin, Texas, at the same time that Guadeloupe will oppose Guatemala in Houston.

Kai Wagner sets up tying goal and scores the winner as the Union defeat Toronto 2-1

TORONTO — Kai Wagner set up the tying goal and scored the winner as the Philadelphia Union rallied to beat Toronto FC 2-1 on Wednesday night. Philadelphia (10-3-3) is unbeaten in eight matches (6-0-2) in MLS play and 10 in all competitions (8-0-2) dating to a 1-0 defeat at New York City FC on April 12. Toronto (3-9-4) has gone 3-5-0 after starting the campaign at 0-4-4. After Nathan Harriel rose high to head home a Wagner corner in the 87th minute, Wagner added a 92nd-minute shot that deflected in off Toronto midfielder Matty Longstaff. Ola Brynhildsen gave Toronto the lead in the 75th with his second goal of the season. Toronto captain Jonathan Osorio, who came off the bench Saturday in his return from a shoulder injury, started for the first time since April 30. Andre Blake was back in goal for Philadelphia after missing the last six games following a knee injury. The Union last won in Toronto in May 2019. ___ AP soccer:
