NAAC introduces fully digital, simplified accreditation system for colleges, universities
NEW DELHI: To upgrade the quality of higher education in the country, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC), has revamped the accreditation process and taken it online. Colleges and Universities will only receive intimation on whether they have been given accreditation or not with the seven-scale rating system that had existed the last three decades to be done away with. An official announcement is likely to be made on July 29 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a grand event to be organised by the Ministry of Education to mark the fifth anniversary of the launch of the National Education Policy 2020, said sources. Chairman of the Executive Council of NAAC, Anil Sahasrabudhe, told this newspaper, 'As on date, roughly 40% of the 1,170 universities in the country have obtained accreditation. When it comes to colleges, not even 20% of the 50,000-odd colleges have managed to get it. Our objective is to ensure that between 90%-95% of these higher educational institutions obtain the accreditation.' Accreditation is a stamp of guarantee of the quality of education offered in the institution. 'It will help the students enormously as they will gain knowledge of a good standard. Parents too will be relieved as they are assured of the quality provided in the institution after paying a hefty sum as fee,' he explained. A senior education official said that the fear of not getting a good grade in the existing system had actually put off hundreds of institutions from applying for the accreditation in the past. Higher educational institutions are presently offered the NAAC accreditation for a five-year period. The revamped process will bring it down to just three years. 'The basic process of obtaining the accreditation will be done fully online with no field visits required by the Committee. This is a major step in simplifying the process and encouraging higher educational institutions to come forward to apply to NAAC,' he said. A new system of gradation will be introduced. 'Those who get the accreditation can next opt for Maturity-Based Graded Accreditation with five levels set to be introduced, ranging between Level 1 and Level 5. Colleges and universities can keep upgrading themselves with one level after another. Level-1 and Level-2 are relatively easy to get and can be obtained online. Level-3 will be a hybrid one with online and field visits to the institute by the NAAC team,' he said. Institutions which already offer a high standard can directly apply to a higher level rather than approach the process step by step, he added. Level-4 and Level-5 will be extremely difficult to obtain and have stringent qualifying criteria. The latter will only be awarded to institutions offering education on par with international standards, Sahasrabudhe added.

Government sets up panel to restructure Association of Indian Universities in line with NEP 2020
Representative image NEW DELHI: The Centre has tasked a high-powered committee with reviewing and restructuring Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to align its mandate with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the proposed reforms under the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). The move comes amid efforts to streamline governance of higher education, enhance institutional autonomy, and establish a globally competitive ecosystem for Indian universities, reports Manash Gohain. The committee will submit its report within six months, during which AIU has been advised to maintain status quo. The committee, chaired by Anil Sahasrabudhe, head of National Educational Technology Forum, is expected to examine AIU's role in the evolving regulatory landscape and suggest how it can support universities as they transition to HECI's unified framework. Its members include V Kamakoti, director, IIT-Madras; Nageshwar Rao, former VC, IGNOU; Shashikala Wanjari, VC, NIEPA; S Vidhyasubramaniam, VC, Sastra; and Pankaj Mittal, secretary general, AIU. AIU, founded in 1925, has for long coordinated functioning of universities, evaluated foreign degrees, and promoted sports and cultural initiatives. However, with NE envisioning a single regulator for higher education through HECI, AIU's operational structure and functions are being reassessed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like So sánh mức trượt giá: Hợp đồng tương lai (CFD) Bitcoin vs Ethereum IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "The committee will examine operational issues and AIU's future role, including whether it should come under HECI," a member told TOI. "AIU's robust institutional network could be leveraged for global engagement and recognition of qualifications under the new system." The restructuring also follows University Grants Commission 's notification of the Recognition and Grant of Equivalence to Qualifications Obtained from Foreign Educational Institutions Regulations, 2025. The framework seeks to establish a standardised and transparent process for recognising foreign academic degrees in India, bolstering the government's "Study in India" initiative.

Naac to roll out new accreditation system, to end easy-grade era
AI Image (TIL creatives) MUMBAI: Nearly a year after India's accreditation system came under scrutiny for rewarding institutions with questionable ease, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Naac) is preparing to turn the page. In about 10 days, Naac will formally start its Basic Level Accreditation system —a reset that promises to bring thousands of previously unaccredited colleges and universities into its fold. At the same time, the policy of Maturity Based Graded Level accreditation will be unveiled for public feedback. Unlike the broadbrush grades of the past, this new system divides the climb into tiers, each stacked with parameters that make reaching the summit—Level 4 or 5—a challenge for even the most seasoned institutions, said Naac chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe. Naac has announced accreditation will be a binary process. This means universities and colleges will be tagged as either 'accredited' or 'still-to-be accredited'. While basic accreditation will be open to institutes graded for the first time, those already accredited earlier can opt for Maturity Based Graded Level accreditation. 'There are strong benchmarks and growing from level 1 to 4, forget 5, will be very tough.' The new methodology was drawn up on the recommendations of Dr Radhakrishnan Committee, which was set up after TOI wrote a series of reports on corruption in grading system. While the future opens up, the past is quietly being put to rest. Around 50 institutions still awaiting accreditation under the old regime will finally receive theirs, after which the old portal will shut down. 'A new accreditation portal for India is ready,' said Prof Sahasrabudhe. He added that this is more than just a procedural update. 'It's a reset in how educational quality is understood — not as a fixed badge of honour, but as an evolving continuum. ' NAAC will release the draft policy of Maturity Based Graded Level accreditation to encourage accredited institutions to 'raise their bar, continuously improve'. The maturity based graded levels will be implemented later in the year.
