Court upholds magistrate's order summoning woman for causing miscarriage

New Delhi, A Delhi court has set aside the order summoning a woman and her family members for several offences, including cheating and extortion, in a complaint filed by her husband. Court upholds magistrate's order summoning woman for causing miscarriage The court, however, upheld the magistrate's order against her for the offence under Section 312 of IPC. Additional sessions judge Ankur Jain was hearing a revision petition filed by the wife, her brother and father against the April 2024 order of a magisterial court summoning them for the offences of criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, criminal breach of trust, cheating, extortion, causing miscarriage, and common intention. In an order dated August 13, the court noted the dispute stemmed from a marital discord and that at the stage of summoning, the court was required to see whether there were prima facie allegations. "The entire averments of the complaint and the testimony of the witness do not show any inducement or fear of injury," the court said. Except for the offence of causing miscarriage by the woman, the court noted, no offence appeared to be made against the three accused persons. "The order of the metropolitan magistrate to that extent is per se illegal and liable to be set aside," it held. The court said the complainant husband filed documents to show that her wife had herself got admitted to a hospital and terminated her pregnancy. Noting the evidence before it, the court said the woman left her matrimonial house on October 7, 2022, and sent a message to her husband that she was living with her brother. A couple of days later, however, she got admitted in a private hospital, where she terminated her pregnancy. "Thus, in so far as the summoning of accused number 1 is concerned, there is no illegality," the court added. We're Looking For The Next Under 30 List. Here's How To Shoot Your Shot

Think this is nice? It's a version of the weekly Under 30 newsletter and would be even better in your inbox . In 2016, Melanie Perkins had raised some $28 million for Canva, an online design platform she cofounded, earning her a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. At the time, Forbes reported: 'Since launching in late 2013, the simple online design platform has reached 8 million users across 179 countries.' Fast forward to today, Canva is generating $3 billion in annual revenue, with over 220 million monthly users, and is deemed the most valuable female-led startup in the world. Perkins, now 38, has herself amassed a fortune of $5.8 billion, placing her among the richest self-made women on the planet. That's exactly the purpose of the Forbes 30 Under 30 list—to identify transformative talent early . Perkins is one of many alumni who have gone on to reshape entire industries with ideas that are both simple and revolutionary. Take Forbes' recent cover star Vlad Tenev, who had the idea to make stock trading digital with Robinhood. Today, Tenev is worth around $6 billion, with Robinhood generating $1.4 billion in profit on nearly $3 billion in revenue last year. Then there's Ankur Jain, a 2015 Under 30 alum, who asked: Why not earn rewards for paying rent with a credit card? That idea became Bilt, his second startup, which recently raised an additional $250 million at a $10.75 billion valuation. These success stories aren't random. They're the result of a rigorous selection process. Each year, Forbes combs through tens of thousands of nominations across our U.S., Asia and Europe 30 Under 30 lists. We consult with leading venture capitalists, accelerators and top universities, then tap experts across different industries—four of whom serve as judges for each of our 20 categories—to help us identify the brightest rising stars. We evaluate everything from the innovativeness of the idea to the strength of its backers, and its potential to scale far beyond current trends. While there's no formula for making the list, we're looking for true changemakers. (More on how we make the list here.) And now, in the age of AI, a new generation of innovators is emerging. Look at Lovable, a startup that lets users build apps simply by entering a prompt. Cofounder Fabian Hedin made the list last year. In just eight months time, Lovable hit $100 million in annualized revenue, making it the fastest-growing software startup ever. Or consider Mercor, which builds AI agents to streamline hiring for companies like Meta and OpenAI. It's already valued at $2 billion, and the cofounders weren't even legal adults when they started. So here's the question: Are you next? Or do you know someone who could, one day, rank amongst Melanie Perkins or Vlad Tenev? Forbes is actively searching for the next class of 30 Under 30—and nominations for U.S. and Canada close in less than a month. Don't wait. Submit yours here. More next week, Zoya, Alex and Alexandra How Scrubbing Your Social Media Could Backfire–And Even Hurt Your Job Prospects Illustration by Samantha Lee for Forbes The Trump Administration wants to know what you're up to online. In June, they announced the 'U.S. consular personnel [should] require those applying for student and cultural exchange visas to set their social media to public, so as to allow a review of their 'entire online presence,'' Forbes writes. Read more here about how the social media rulebook is changing for students and recent grads. On Our Radar -As if you needed another reason to join us at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit in Columbus, Ohio, this fall, rumor has it Taylor Swift and NFL boyfriend Travis Kelce are thinking about buying a place in the Buckeye state. They've already toured a few "opulent" properties in the Cleveland area, sources say. ( The Cut ) -Do you find yourself accidentally coming across political content on TikTok? That passive consumption (compared to actively seeking out this sort of information) online is having a big impact on politics. While many signs pointed to Gen Z being the most progressive generation yet, last year's election indicated otherwise. Vox dug into why—and what constant scrolling has to do with it. ( Vox ) -Welcome, Paramount, A Skydance Corporation. This week, after a year-long process, Paramount and Skydance officially merged to make the combined $8.4 billion media company. The closed deal comes just a few weeks after President Trump sued CBS (owned by Paramount Global) over a 60 Minutes segment that he alleged 'tipped the scale' of last year's election. Paramount's $16 million payout to settle the suit was apparently not out of any admission of guilt, but to keep this deal moving. ( Deadline ) One Minute With Anna Monaco We're bringing you the scoop on a new Under 30 community member. Up this week: 2025 AI lister Anna Monaco. She's the founder of Paradigm, a startup that automates the process of filling out spreadsheets. The following has been lightly edited for length and clarity. What is your fifteen second elevator pitch on Paradigm? Paradigm is a spreadsheet interface that enables users to query the internet as if it were a database. We help our clients, whether it be consulting firms or tech giants, automate complex and manual research by filling in cells in a matter of seconds. Why did you decide to take on the process of automating spreadsheets? I ran a different company before Paradigm, building websites and AI chatbots for startups. Eventually I realized that although chat features are a great interface, spreadsheets are also a highly valuable tool because most knowledge workers use them to store valuable data. I saw an opportunity in redefining them with AI. What is an AI hack that more people should know about? Whenever my friends and I are curious about something, instead of looking it up, we will use ChatGPT's voice mode to ask questions. There's a nicer vibe to it. Plus you can ask follow up questions and let people in the group chime in. What is a company or venture that you admire? Cursor AI. I love how they were so ruthlessly product-obsessed for the first few years of the company. I feel like they built a product for themselves, which is what I feel like I'm doing at Paradigm. How do you start your days? I start my days in such a basic founder way by checking email and Slack, responding to as many people as possible. I also love running so I try to do a brief run in the mornings. Our team does internal stand-up at 9 a.m. every weekday where we discuss what's on the docket for the day. What does the Paradigm team look like now? Our team is still super small with six full-time employees. We were only three people a few months ago so we are in the early stages of growing a team. We believe that small teams that are very technical can make a big impact. We want to bring exceptional people onto Paradigm that can have the impact of 10 people while doing the work of one. What's something you can't live without? Noise-canceling headphones. What is the best advice you've ever received? Make every decision as if you are the most ambitious version of yourself. What does Paradigm's next chapter look like? In terms of internal impact I would like to build an intentional culture that has both deeply technical engineers as well as product-obsessed people that bring creativity to the table. Externally, I would love to keep building this community of people that love using our product. I've found that my metric for product satisfaction is not just that someone uses it all the time, but they can't stop talking about it or showing it to other people. That level of product-obsession is what I am aiming for in the next couple of years.

Bilt Reaches $10.8B Valuation & Announces Home Away From Home Platform

Imagine walking into your neighborhood cocktail bar and receiving a round of espresso martinis on the house – not because it's your birthday, but because you live nearby. Or booking a fitness class seamlessly through an app, and earning a post-workout smoothie in the process. Bilt is betting big on this vision of hyper-local loyalty, where members including many Gen Zers, earn perks not only for paying rent but also for engaging with the merchants, experiences, and entertainment options that define their daily lives. The loyalty program turning rent payments into reward points, has launched a hotel collection that brings this to life. The company's newly launched "Home Away From Home" collection offers Bilt's members VIP benefits like early check-in and premium amenities at the world's most prominent hotels. This marks a notable shift for a company that built its reputation on helping renters earn points on their monthly housing payments. While Bilt has offered travel-focused rewards before - in partnership with Virtuoso - this latest addition suggests the five-year-old startup is testing whether its members want more than just rent-related perks from their loyalty program. It doesn't hurt that just last week, the company more than tripled its valuation to $10.75 billion. But, this global travel expansion retains a local-first lens. Ankur Jain, founder and CEO of Bilt, explains, 'When our most loyal members travel, they get curated recommendations and perks at the best local restaurants and bars in that city. We're enhancing our merchant network by connecting travelers to it, not just residents.' "Our Gold and Platinum members have been asking for travel experiences that match the elevated lifestyle they've come to expect,' said Richard Kerr, VP of Travel at Bilt. 'Home Away From Home delivers exactly that, but with a twist – every property feels like an extension of their own neighborhood. The partnership with Virtuoso means they're getting white-glove service with dedicated travel advisors managing every detail of their journey. We're giving our members that same level of access and service as part of their existing Bilt experience." More (Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images) From Rent Payments to a Local Lifestyle Platform Bilt began with a simple but powerful idea: allow renters to pay rent by credit card without transaction fees and earn points along the way. But Ankur Jain, Bilt's founder and CEO, sees an even broader future. 'We looked at it as a housing and neighborhood commerce platform,' Jain explains. 'The customer gets value for payments they're already making, plus rewards that create a true members-club feel within their community.' The company partners with property managers nationwide to integrate seamlessly into residents' lives, creating what David Wyler, Chief Business Officer, calls a fully branded ecosystem. 'There are more Bilt emblems on property walls than some hotel signs globally,' he says. Residents encounter Bilt at every stage – from lease signing to monthly payments to local perks that make their neighborhood feel like an extension of their living room. Home Away from Home journey Driving Local Commerce with Data and Perks Beyond rent rewards, Bilt's model aims to drive meaningful economic impact for neighborhood businesses. 'Two years ago, we launched our neighborhood rewards program,' says Jain. 'Local businesses pay us to drive customers to them. It's a performance marketing fee – they only pay when we drive spend.' Through its platform, merchants can analyze foot traffic and spending patterns by building, allowing them to tailor promotions. Jain illustrates: 'A restaurant can see there are 347 residents in a nearby building, 19 have visited so far, and they can target that building with a campaign offering comped espresso martinis for every guest in their reservation. It's hyper-targeted and drives real ROI.' Richard Kerr, VP of Travel, echoes this focus on value creation: 'These businesses no longer have to rely on flyers under doors or broad Facebook ads. We're offering a smarter way to connect with locals who live just steps away.' Entertainment as a Loyalty Driver Bilt is also reinventing neighborhood entertainment. Jain says Bilt invests in hyper-local experiences. 'We created a network of private comedy shows across the U.S., bringing the best local stand-up talent to intimate, invite-only events for Bilt Members. We also host monthly tasting menus with top neighborhood chefs to introduce residents to their local culinary scene.' This experiential focus turns loyalty from a transactional program into a lifestyle brand, aligning with what consumers increasingly value: unique experiences that create connection and community. Integrations Drive Richer Local Loyalty Program Bilt's competitive edge lies in deep integration with housing and neighborhood commerce ecosystems, enabling services that go far beyond traditional points programs. Jain elaborates, 'We built a rewards ecosystem, a demand management platform, and a loyalty checkout capability. We can programmatically have a car waiting to move you, have dinner booked and certain items comped, and automatically apply your FSA/HSA benefits – all seamlessly integrated.' This vision – a frictionless local loyalty experience powered by AI and proprietary integrations – turns loyalty into a strategic moat. 'Even OpenAI, which powers a lot of our models, doesn't have integrations into point-of-sale systems, healthcare reimbursement rails, or the rent ledger,' Jain notes. 'That's what makes Bilt unique.' The Future of Local Loyalty As urban living and digital experiences continue to merge, Bilt is betting that loyalty's next frontier isn't just about flights or cashback. Instead, it's about making people feel recognized, rewarded, and entertained in the places they call home – whether that's an apartment in Brooklyn Heights, a condo in Scottsdale Quarter, or a luxury hotel suite in Aspen. Jain summarizes the thesis simply: 'Your home isn't just the four walls you live in. It's where you dine, work out, pick up prescriptions, and spend time with friends. We're creating a loyalty experience that lives everywhere you do.'

Bilt hits $10.75bn valuation

Neighbourhood loyalty platform Bilt has raised $250 million in primary funding, sending its valuation soaring to $10.75 billion. 0 The round was led by General Catalyst and GID with further investment from United Wholesale Mortgage and more than triples Bilt's valuation from a $150 million round just a year ago. Launched in 2021, Bilt began as the first platform enabling US consumers to earn rewards on their largest monthly expenditure - rent - and then use the rewards via a card at local merchants. The firm's network of homes has now signed one in four apartment buildings across the United States and partnered with over 40,000 merchants nationwide. It has also grown from a card business into a full loyalty ecosystem, with more than 85% of members now using its platform via ACH, debit cards, credit cards, and more. Meanwhile, it drives business to merchants in its local network through an AI-powered 'neighbourhood concierge' that introduces members to those merchants and offers personalized recommendations. With new funding in place, Bilt is now expanding to all housing categories: condo, student housing and mortgage payments. Says CEO Ankur Jain: "What makes Bilt special isn't just our scale—it's our flywheel effect. More properties in our network attract more merchants, which creates more value for residents, which attracts more properties. This virtuous cycle, powered by our AI-driven commerce platform and comprehensive merchant integrations, creates an ecosystem that becomes stronger with each new participant."
