Bilt hits $10.75bn valuation
0
The round was led by General Catalyst and GID with further investment from United Wholesale Mortgage and more than triples Bilt's valuation from a $150 million round just a year ago.
Launched in 2021, Bilt began as the first platform enabling US consumers to earn rewards on their largest monthly expenditure - rent - and then use the rewards via a card at local merchants.
The firm's network of homes has now signed one in four apartment buildings across the United States and partnered with over 40,000 merchants nationwide. It has also grown from a card business into a full loyalty ecosystem, with more than 85% of members now using its platform via ACH, debit cards, credit cards, and more.
Meanwhile, it drives business to merchants in its local network through an AI-powered 'neighbourhood concierge' that introduces members to those merchants and offers personalized recommendations.
With new funding in place, Bilt is now expanding to all housing categories: condo, student housing and mortgage payments.
Says CEO Ankur Jain: "What makes Bilt special isn't just our scale—it's our flywheel effect. More properties in our network attract more merchants, which creates more value for residents, which attracts more properties. This virtuous cycle, powered by our AI-driven commerce platform and comprehensive merchant integrations, creates an ecosystem that becomes stronger with each new participant."

Exclusive: Blackstone drops out of consortium bid for TikTok US, source says
July 18 (Reuters) - Private equity giant Blackstone has withdrawn from a consortium seeking to invest in TikTok's U.S. operations, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday. The latest change came as uncertainty has mounted and there have been several delays in the TikTok deal now at the center of U.S.-China trade talks. Blackstone had planned to take a minority stake in the TikTok U.S. business in a deal orchestrated by President Donald Trump. The consortium is led by Susquehanna International Group and General Atlantic, current investors in TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance. The group had emerged as the front-runner to secure TikTok's U.S. business in a deal under which U.S. investors would own 80% of TikTok, while ByteDance would retain a minority stake. Blackstone declined to comment. TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The deadline for ByteDance to divest the popular social media app in the U.S. has been repeatedly postponed, creating uncertainty for investors. Last month, Trump signed a third executive order extending the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban, moving the cutoff to September 17. In April 2024, Congress passed a law mandating a sale or shutdown of TikTok by January 19, 2025. Extensions to the deadline have drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who argue the Trump administration is 'flouting the law' and ignoring national security concerns related to Chinese control over TikTok. ByteDance is exploring various options to address these concerns, including selling or restructuring its U.S. operations. The Chinese social media giant, which raked in $43 billion in the first three months of this year, recently surpassed Meta in quarterly revenue, sources told Reuters. The U.S. consortium, favored by the administration in any TikTok deal, also includes KKR, as well as new investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Reuters previously reported. Oracle is also likely to take a stake. It is unclear whether other bidders in the consortium are still involved. A deal had been in the works this spring to spin off TikTok's U.S. operations into a new U.S.-based firm. Talks were put on hold after China indicated it would not approve the transaction, following Trump's announcement of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. If a sale is finalized, the new U.S. app is expected to be owned by a joint venture formed by an American investor consortium and ByteDance, which would maintain a minority stake. TikTok is already working on a U.S.-specific app, sources told Reuters. Blackstone's exit highlights the complexities and uncertainties involved in the deal, as the ongoing talks over TikTok's fate have now become part of Trump's broader trade negotiations with China, and Trump said he would speak to President Xi Jinping about it.

Expert issues grim prediction about AI firm whose CEO and HR boss were caught cuddling at Coldplay concert
An expert has warned that the tech firm where the infamous Coldplay couple work could face an exodus of customers over their viral moment. AI-tech start up Astronomer has been thrust into the limelight this week after a moment of intimacy between CEO Andy Byron and his Head of People Kristin Cabot was caught on camera at the band's Boston concert on Tuesday night. The company has launched a HR investigation into the incident which has launched the pair into viral fame, but their troubles might not end there. Peter Davenport, senior strategic consult with marketing firm Definition, told The Wall Street Journal that it could kill the potential for new clients at the company. He said: 'While the visibility puts a spotlight on who Astronomer is, this is not usually the kind of publicity that brings in new customers. 'In fact, it threatens to erode trust and authority built over years, especially in industries where reputation and reliability matter most.' The pair tried to hide when the kiss-cam panned to them at Boston's Gillette Stadium, as front man Chris Martin joked: 'They're either having an affair, or are very shy.' Neither Byron or Cabot have commented on the clip. Public records indicate that while both were married in the past, they now live separately from their spouses. The company said on Friday: 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability. 'The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter and we will have additional details to share very shortly.' It is unclear at this time how much the firm knew about their closeness, they have not clarified if the pair are still in their positions, or if they'll be placed on leave. In the viral moment, the two were seen enjoying the show when the camera operator working the jumbotron panned to them. Byron had his arms wrapped around Cabot and the pair swayed in unison as the music rang out. The intimate moment descended into chaos as panic set in, Byron seemingly fell to his knees while Cabot put her head in her hands as the crowd laughed. Byron's firm is valued at over $1 billion, with the company experiencing rapid growth since he became CEO in 2023. That year, Astronomer reported a 292% growth in revenue for its 'Astro' platform. Just a week before his viral fame, Byron appeared on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) TV to celebrate the company after it raised $93 million in its Series D round of financing. A beaming Byron described the investment as 'a huge opportunity' and 'very exciting' for the firm. When Cabot joined the firm as HR boss in November 2024, Byron heaped praise on her, saying she would be a 'perfect fit' at his company. 'Kristin's exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management, employee engagement, and scaling people strategies will be critical as we continue our rapid trajectory,' he said in a press release at the time. 'She is a proven leader at multiple growth-stage companies and her passion for fostering diverse, collaborative workplaces makes her a perfect fit for Astronomer.' The fan who captured the moment has since been identified as New Jersey native Grace Springer, she told the US Sun she had no idea who the pair were. She said the moment became the talk of the show due to their 'interesting reaction', and admitted that 'a part of me feels bad for turning these people's lives upside down.' But she added in a cheeky swipe: 'Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.' Springer said there was 'a lot of talk' about the kiss cam at the show, but 'no one knew who they were'.

Perplexity in talks with phone makers to pre-install Comet AI mobile browser on devices
July 18 (Reuters) - Nvidia-backed Perplexity AI, the startup challenging Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab with its AI-powered search engine, is in discussions with mobile device makers to pre-install its new Comet browser on smartphones, CEO Aravind Srinivas told Reuters on Friday. The move could significantly boost Perplexity's reach by capitalizing on browser "stickiness", where users tend to stick with browser apps that are pre-installed or set as default on their devices, potentially driving habitual use of the company's AI tools. "It's not easy to convince mobile OEMs to change the default browser to Comet from Chrome," Srinivas said, referring to original equipment manufacturers and highlighting the challenge of user inertia on mobile platforms. Comet, currently in beta and available only on desktops, integrates Perplexity's AI directly into web browsing, allowing users to ask questions about personal data like emails, calendars, or browsing history, and even perform tasks such as scheduling meetings or summarizing webpages. Perplexity aims to target "tens to hundreds of millions" of users next year after stabilizing the desktop version for a few hundred thousand initial testers, Srinivas said. Its efforts reflect a broader industry shift toward browsers with agentic AI capabilities, ones that need minimal human intervention to make decisions and achieve specific tasks. Reuters reported earlier this month that OpenAI is developing its own agentic AI browser, which could automate complex tasks such as booking travel or managing finances. As of last month, Google's Chrome had a market share of about 70% in mobile devices, while Apple's Safari and Samsung's browsers together commanding another 24%, according to Statcounter data. Bloomberg News reported in June that Perplexity was in talks with Samsung Electronics ( opens new tab and Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab to integrate its AI search capabilities into their devices, potentially enhancing assistants like Bixby or Siri. Perplexity has completed a $500 million investment round, which valued it at $14 billion earlier this year. Its investors include Accel, Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab, Jeff Bezos and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
