Police catch teen in unsuccessful car theft
Photo: ODT A Dunedin teenager unsuccessfully attempting to hot-wire vehicles at the weekend was spotted angrily kicking the steering wheel of a car he was trying steal. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to Burns St on Sunday at 1.30am after a member of the public witnessed a teenager try to steal his Toyota Passo. The member of the public watched the 16-year-old teenager — who was not having much luck stealing the car— grow frustrated and start kicking the steering wheel when the car would not start. The teenager then gave up and ran off, and went down the road to Autocourt where he began to try to steal a Toyota Aqua and a Toyota Platz. He did not complete the job before police arrived, and instead attempted to flee. Officers caught up with the teenager a short distance away and arrested him. Police found a screw driver, blow torch and other car conversion tools on him. The teenager was bailed to appear in Dunedin Youth Court today charged with unlawful interference with a motor vehicle, possession of instruments for conversion, and two charges of unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

Snr Sgt Bond said the man was arrested, and charges included threatening behaviour likely to cause violence, disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence, assaulting police, wilful damage and threatening to kill. Speeding teen overtook officers while drunk: police
If you are drinking and driving, the best way to advertise the fact is to pass a police car at speed. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said a 19-year-old man did just that on Sunday morning. The teen was stopped in Timaru St, after overtaking a police car while travelling on the Southern Motorway in Caversham Valley. As a result of the passing maneuver, he was going over the speed limit, Snr Sgt Bond said. Police breath-tested him and he recorded a breath alcohol level of 599mcg. He was charged with drink driving and dangerous driving, and will appear in the Dunedin District Court. ''If you're drinking, don't drive — that's the message.'' The 19-year-old was just one of many stopped by Dunedin Police over the weekend. In another unusual incident, Snr Sgt Bond said police attended a car crash in Frasers Rd, Kaikorai Valley, about 1am on Saturday. ''A 24-year-old female was intoxicated while walking up Frasers Rd. ''As she was walking along, she was trying the car doors to each car that she passed. ''She found an unlocked Ford Territory, jumped into the driver's seat, put the vehicle into neutral and released the handbrake. ''It's then rolled forward and collided with a parked car.'' The woman was breath tested and recorded a result of 983mcg. She was charged with drink driving and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, and is also due to appear in the Dunedin District Court. Snr Sgt Bond said 21-year-old man was stopped about 5am on Sunday, in Main South Rd, Concord, after police spotted his passenger not wearing a seatbelt. The driver recorded a breath alcohol level of 832mcg, so his licence was suspended and he is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court. Snr Sgt Bond said the passenger also received a ticket for failing to wear a seatbelt. On Saturday night, another 19-year-old man was stopped by Dunedin Police at a checkpoint in King Edward St, about 10.30pm, where he recorded a breath alcohol level of 757mcg. His licence was suspended for 28 days and he is due to appear in court. Thirty minutes earlier, at the same checkpoint, a 38-year-old man recorded 646mcg and is also due to appear in court. At 9.15pm on Saturday, a 40-year-old man recorded 312mcg in Cumberland St, and received an infringement notice. And on Friday at 7.25pm, a 72-year-old man was also charged with drink driving after recording a breath alcohol level of 773mcg. ''It's always disappointing when anyone drinks and drives. ''A number of them were caught by our impairment team who were out doing checkpoints across the city.'' He said it was difficult to say if the number of drink drivers in city was increasing. ''It's hard to know whether it has always been like this and we weren't catching them because we weren't stopping as many vehicles, or we're just now catching more because we're out there doing more checkpoints.''

200kmh teen 'wanted to have some fun'
A Dunedin teenager caught driving his new Mustang more than 200kmh told police he "wanted to have some fun in it". Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police stopped a 19-year-old at 11.55pm on Saturday after he was seen going 202kmh on the Southern Motorway - more than double the 100kmh speed limit. The driver had bought the car, a 2019 Ford Mustang GT valued at about $60,000, about three weeks earlier. He told officers he had taken the Mustang out because he "wanted to have some fun in it". The fun soon ended and due to the excessive speed, he was charged with driving at a dangerous speed and his car was impounded for 28 days. His licence was also suspended for 28 days and he would appear in Dunedin District Court on May 30. Snr Sgt Bond said driving at those speeds was ''a disaster waiting to happen''. "The faster you go the bigger the mess, and at going twice the speed limit, you're not going to survive any crash — it's just dumb."

Stolen vehicle found being stripped in South D garage
When Dunedin police arrived to arrest a man who allegedly hit 100kmh on George St, they discovered a stolen vehicle being stripped for parts in his garage. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said a 22-year-old man was arrested at a South Dunedin address overnight on 15 charges. When police arrived, they found a Mazda Bounty in the garage, which had been stolen on March 7. ''It was in the process of being stripped down,'' Snr Sgnt Bond said. ''[We're] still investigating what he's done with that and his involvement with the recent vehicles being stolen too.'' Snr Sgnt Bond said police saw a car ''taking off'' up Maitland St around midnight last night. Police searched the area and tried to stop the vehicle but the driver allegedly took off at speed, travelling over 100kmh along George St. The car, which was not registered to the 22-year-old, was seen again near Lovelock Ave, where police identified the driver as he drove past. ''[We] haven't tried to follow it again. It's turned its lights off and gone onto the wrong side of the road. ''Followed it, well listened to it, because of the high noise it's making in the time of the night, to the South Dunedin area. The car was found parked on Nile St and dogs units tracked the driver a short distance to a residential address, where he was arrested about 12.30am. Snr Sgnt Bond said the man would appear in the Dunedin District Court today on 15 charges going back over the past month — including eight counts of driving while disqualified. ''We believe he fled from us two nights ago as well, but that investigation is still ongoing.'' Further charges included receiving stolen goods, failing to carry-out cell phone obligations, driving a motor vehicle dangerously and two charges of theft relating to petrol drive-offs. The Mazda Bounty has been returned to its owner.
