World Games: Hong Kong gold tally doubled, wushu champ Yeung thanks Bruce Lee
Hong Kong's Anthony Yeung Chung-hei won the city's second gold medal at the World Games in Chengdu on Saturday, topping the podium in wushu before thanking the influence of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Yeung's first-place finish in the Chinese martial art's taijijian combined event kept the Hong Kong team on a high after Grace Lau Mo-sheung's karate gold on Friday. It also secured the city's best-ever performance at a World Games in terms of gold medals, having previously won solitary golds at the 2013 and 2022 events. Yeung had claimed taijiquan bronze in 2022 at the Games' previous edition in Birmingham, Alabama. The 28-year-old finished top of the podium in the men's Taijiquan-Taijijian combined event with a total score of 19.526. Japan's Tomohiro Araya placed second, while Tay Yu Xuan from Singapore took the bronze. Yeung last competed at the World Games 2022 in the United States, when he brought home a bronze medal in the same event. Wong Po-kee, the delegation's chef de mission and honorary deputy secretary general of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, said Yeung delivered a strong and determined performance in this year's World Games. "Whether wielding the sword or executing bare-handed forms, he demonstrated ease and confidence, delivering his moves with a harmonious blend of softness and strength, powered by profound internal energy," Wong said. "Through his consistent and outstanding performance, he got high scores in both rounds and successfully clinched the gold medal, promoting the national essence. "His achievement is truly commendable and worthy of celebration." Yeung's achievement came after Grace Lau claimed gold in women's karate on Friday night.
