Glasgow Friends of Israel hits back over anti-racist ban
However, on July 17, SUTR published a statement saying the group was no longer welcome at marches due to their support for Israel and 'the far-right'. GFI chairman Sammy Stein told The Herald he was surprised by the announcement as a leading member of SUTR had previously defended the group's right to attend marches. He said: 'They're afraid about what other groups might say. They've always tried to keep behind the stewards, but they did tolerate us, albeit in a non-friendly manner. 'I think they're threatened by a number of groups who don't want us to be there.' Glasgow Friends of Israel are no longer welcome at SUTR events, in a about face from five years ago. (Image: NQ) Stein pointed The Herald to a recording of a 'Islamaphobia, Anti-Semitism, and the Rise of the Far-Right' discussion hosted by SUTRS in 2020, in which the group's convenor, Talat Ahmed, said: 'Stand Up to Racism is not a political football for anyone with agendas to mess around with, under any circumstances whatsoever… Stand Up to Racism never has done, and never will do, have a position on the Middle East. 'What do you think my job should be as the convenor of Stand Up to Racism? Should I stand there policing who I like the look of? 'Should I let some in and tell the others they are not welcome? Get real. That is not what Stand Up to Racism is about. We welcome everyone, irrespective of what their positions are on a whole myriad of other politics and positions. '[That applies] if you are Jewish or Palestinian, irrespective of any politics you may hold.' Left-wing groups such as Scotland Against Criminalising Communities and Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign have long criticised SUTR for this stance. Reform councillor Thomas Kerr (L)'s support for the group has caused controversy. (Image: Getty Images)Stein said: 'At this meeting, Talat Ahmed made a very clear and courageous statement about welcoming everyone regardless of their politics. She criticised those who were trying to keep anyone out of the march. 'I thought she was very brave and sincere about her words and hence my huge disappointment about her decision to no longer stand up for these principles.' However, five years later, as war rages in Gaza, SUTR's neutral position on the Middle East appears to have been firmly abandoned. SUTR Scotland secretary Héctor Sierra told The Herald: "It is telling that Glasgow Friends of Israel are accusing us of hypocrisy instead of addressing the reasons why we have said they are not welcome at our events. These reasons are: their support for the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and their friendly relationships with far-right organisations here in Scotland. 'Glasgow Friends of Israel continues to justify the slaughter in Gaza, with much of its social media content this week being devoted to casting doubt over the horrific scale of mass starvation in the Strip.' One post on the GFI Facebook page refers to 'the lies of starvation in Gaza,' while another accused media organisations of creating 'fake news and propaganda at the expense of a sick child.' Sierra continued, calling the group a 'toxic organisation on the wrong side of history.' He said: 'On the second point, Glasgow Friends of [[Israel]] responded to our statement rejecting them by reaffirming their sympathy for Reform UK, a party focused on demonising refugees and migrants. Nick Tenconi led a 'mass deportations' march through Glasgow last week. (Image:) 'As if that were not enough, last weekend when SUTR organised an anti-racist protest to oppose fascist Nick Tenconi's 'mass deportation' march through Glasgow, they described SUTR, not Tenconi, as 'the problem'. SUTR is engaged in building a mass movement to resist the racist, Islamophobic and antisemitic far-right.' A post on the GFI Facebook from last Saturday states: 'Today on Buchanan Street, a group called Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) had rallied a mob with a call to arms to oppose a march by Nick Tenconi, the leader of UKIP. 'SUTR has branded him a racist and fascist and called on the masses to oppose what was probably to be a perfectly peaceful march. 'SUTR are an extremely unpleasant bunch of individuals, supported by black clad, mask wearing militant Antifa thugs and the usual Israel haters and they were there in force today for one reason and one reason only and that was to cause trouble.' Read more: 'Our community is being attacked': Queer Glaswegians to call out Israel during Pride Large group of anti-fascist protestors oppose 'mass deportation' rally Scottish anti-racist campaigners bar pro-Israel groups from events Speaking to The Herald, Stein denied that GFI had any connection to right-wing groups, after leading Reform councillor Thomas Kerr was photographed visiting their stall on Buchanan Street. 'We are not racist and neither is Zionism. A Zionist is someone who believes a Jewish person should have a home in Israel. 'Many members of my family were killed in the Holocaust,' Stein added. 'I march to remember them. We will not stop taking part, as we believe we must stand up to racist and especially anti-Semitism. 'We will make every effort to participate in the marches, despite the obstructions and pushing.'

‘Anti-Semitism is rising,' says Asmongold, blaming it on 'Israel' and the way they respond to its related criticism
(Image via YouTube/Asmongold Tv) Popular Twitch streamer Zack Hoyt, popularly known as Asmongold during his recent broadcast, claimed that anti-semitism is rising. While speaking about it, he pointed to Israel's policies and the way the country handles all criticism, especially ones that are related to the conflict of Palestine. As per Asmongold, these are some of the factors that lead to the anti-semitism rise. Such comments made by Twitch streamer Asmongold during a recent broadcast drew both agreement and criticism across social media platforms. Asmongold points finger at Israel amidst rising Anti-Semitism Asmongold, during his recent broadcast, bluntly stated that there's a 'massive rise in anti-semitism.' He argued that the surge stems from varied factors, such as broader societal concerns like media messaging, mass immigration policies, and others. However, he placed a major emphasis on the role of Israel. It was specifically contended by the streamer that the conduct of Israel in Palestine, especially since the October 2023 conflict, severely damaged the Jewish people's perceptions globally. In the words of Asmongold, 'a lot of that anti-Semitism by is caused by Israel and the way that they treat any criticism of Israel as anti-Semitism.' Asmongold even acknowledged that Anti-Semitism did exist before, but as per his beliefs, recent events just amplified it. It created a much more hostile environment. He believes it is something 'Hasan would agree with.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Only 2% Intraday Trader Do Market Profile & Book Maximum Profit. TradeWise Learn More Undo He then added, Hasan is just "obsessed with optics but, at the same time, he does things that are horrible optics," commenting on HasanAbi's online presence. Asmongold further went ahead to criticize what he perceived as the defensive strategy of Israel. He claimed that the supporters of the state, along with the state, often conflate the legitimate criticism of the Israeli government policies or the actions of the military as anti-Jewish bigotry. Such a tactic, according to Asmongold, backfires. Labelling diverse critiques to be anti-Semitic fuels resentment and offers a cover for genuine prejudice, allowing it to flourish. Asmongold Anti-Semitism comments brings in mixed reactions The reaction of Asmongold was swift. Some users echoed his sentiment. They argued that the intense focus upon the Israel Palestine conflict , along with controversial actions like some proposed special laws in Iraq, brought some underlying prejudices into the open. In clear words, the comment read, 'It's not a rise it's just not being censored as much and yes the war has pushed them into spotlight then Iraq gov pushing special laws for Jewish ppl ppl don't hate the jews they dislike everything taking place." Some users even stressed that, 'There 100% is a rise in antisemitism. Compassion for the genocide in Gaza is causing this. While I think it's important to acknowledge this, I also think it's important to not let this be the narrative. Palestinians are the victims here. Don't let Israel distort this.' 'The rise of anti semitism was expected. People who actually hate Jewish people are now finding out that a majority of the world is against Israel. And they're using it as a way to put forth their racist views,' read another comment. Echoing on to the topic and a lot of other factors, an X user said, 'You dont get to hate jews because a Jewish country's actions. I thought progressives would have learned how stupid this is around September 2001. But perhaps most weren't alive then.' Conversely, some strong criticism was even directed at figures like HasanAbi, who were referenced by Asmongold. The user said, 'Hasan and Mike are part of that rise, IMO. Calling Jews inbreds and a demonic ethnicity don't them any favors.' 'Hasan wants things to go there. His goal is the complete destruction of Israel and all Jews,' read another comment made against the streamer. Some even believed and openly expressed that both Asmongold and Hasan are now compromised. A user comment made in this regard read, 'both Asmon and Hasan are slaves to je*ish money.' The worst came in as the users started targeting Asmongold alone. A user made comment read, 'He should just come out and say he is Jewish, everybody knows already.' The other said, 'Elevating Asmongold as a voice against anti-Semitism is wild lmao His chat is chock full of nazis at all times.' 'Poor Asmongold. Has to be a TOS boy for Twitch instead of expressing his true feelings. His true feelings being the plain and simple fact that some cultures & religions are better than others,' read another comment. With all being stated openly out there, the one thing or rather a recurring point in here, was a need to separate political criticism from bigotry. The entire debate underscored the extreme difficulty in separating the Israel criticism related to the state's action from the prejudice against the people or the associated groups. While Asmongold and some of the users highlight how the Israeli policies, along with defensive reactions, might inflame the tensions, others have just been warning against allowing legitimate outrage over Gaza to become a conduit for age-old hatred. The core challenge here remains addressing the legitimate grievances without actually enabling the harmful stereotypes. Call for envoy's resignation after husband's donation
Anti-Semitism envoy Jillian Segal is facing calls to resign after revelations that a trust linked to her husband made a donation to a right-wing lobby group. Ms Segal's husband, John Roth, is a director of Henroth Discretionary Trust, which gave $50,000 to Advance Australia in the 2023/24 financial year. The donation was, according to Australian Electoral Commission records, disclosed by his company Henroth Investments Pty Ltd. Ms Segal is not listed as a director or shareholder of the company. The donation, first reported by The Guardian and The Klaxon, has prompted Muslim community groups to call for her resignation as Australia's Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism. Advance has previously claimed that federal Labor was backed by the Chinese Communist Party and accused left-wing politicians of being "mostly on the same side as Hamas". In her role, Ms Segal is tasked with helping social cohesion in Australia and last week handed a report on combating anti-Semitism to the Albanese government. In a statement, Ms Segal said she had no influence on the donations made by the trust. "No one would tolerate or accept my husband dictating my politics, and I certainly won't dictate his," she told the ABC. "I have had no involvement in his donations, nor will I." The Lebanese Muslim Association said the envoy's position was no longer tenable and that her response rang "hollow". "Segal cannot credibly lead efforts against anti-Semitism while remaining silent about, or benefiting from, the funding of organisations that fuel other forms of racism and bigotry," it said in a statement. "To pretend this has no bearing on her role is insulting. "The community isn't naive; this wasn't a distant relative or a faceless entity." Treasurer Jim Chalmers said it was a matter for Ms Segal. "We are taking substantial steps to crack down on this disgraceful escalation in anti-Semitism that we're seeing in our society," he told reporters in Canberra on Monday. "We're working our way through that, but when it comes to donations made by her husband to that organisation, she's addressed this publicly on the record, and I see that as a matter for her." In her report last week, Ms Segal made a number of recommendations that are being considered by the government.
