Air quality in Mukah deteriorates further, records Malaysia's only unhealthy API reading of 160 as of 8am
Haze situation in Mukah yesterday afternoon. – The Borneo Post Team KUCHING (July 31): Air quality in Mukah has continued to deteriorate with an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 160 as of 8am today. According to the Department of Environment's (DoE) Air Pollutant Index Management System (Apims) data, Mukah has recorded an API of 160 since 3am. At 12 noon yesterday, the API reading in Mukah was moderate at 98. Since then, the API for the area has moved steadily upward. All other areas under DOE's Apims in Sarawak maintained a moderate air quality level. The Borneo Post reported yesterday that Mukah was the only district in Malaysia to record an unhealthy air quality of 107 as of 6pm. Sibu recorded the second highest API in Sarawak at 90, followed by Miri and Kapit at 73, and Kuching at 71. Other stations in the state reported readings ranging from 58 to 69. An API reading between 101 and 200 is categorised as unhealthy and may pose health risks to sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. API readings of 51 to 100 show moderate air quality. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds for Kuching; Samarahan; Betong; Sarikei; Kanowit and Selangau in Sibu; Tanjung Manis and Daro in Mukah; Song, Kapit, and Bukit Mabong; as well as Tatau, Bintulu until noon today. The department said in a Facebook post that a warning is issued when there are indications of a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20 mm/hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour. A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single issue. Yesterday, the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) in a 5.22pm update reported scattered clusters of hotspots in western Kalimantan, along with a few to isolated hotspots in Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra. Mukah records highest API in the country
The Air Pollutant Index (API) in Mukah, Sarawak, recorded an unhealthy level as of 3pm yesterday, with a reading of 154 – the highest in both the state and the country. API readings between 101 and 200 are categorised as unhealthy and may pose health risks to children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory conditions. Other parts of Sarawak recorded moderate air quality, according to the Environment Department's Air Pollutant Index Management System (Apims), Bernama reported.

Sarawak braces for transboundary haze amid spike in border hotspots

Citing a July 21 report from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the NREB said in a statement that the HYSPLIT model forecasts a moderate impact from haze originating in the neighbouring country, particularly over western Sarawak within the next 72 hours. 'As a proactive or preventive measure, NREB is carrying out patrolling and physical monitoring activities including using drones in agricultural areas, peatlands, bushland areas and landfills which have been identified as having a high risk of fire. 'This measure has proven effective in reducing open burning. This can be seen from the significant difference in the number of hotspots detected in Sarawak (62) and in the neighbouring country (448 hotspots) from July 18-24,' NREB said, adding that it would continue to monitor the daily development of hotspots through the Singapore-based Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) website. Most of the foreign hotspots were located near Lundu and Tebedu. As of 8am today, Lundu recorded an Air Pollution Index (API) of 125 (unhealthy), while Tebedu registered 69 (moderate). They would be identified as high-risk areas if their API increases, the board added. Should air quality worsen, NREB will update the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) with real-time data on API levels and hotspots to support decision-making, including potential school closures, depending on Education Ministry thresholds. The board also reminded the public not to engage in open burning during the dry season and urged residents to report any such activities to the nearest NREB office or via its hotline 082-447488 or 082-319500. Meanwhile, according to the Department of Environment's (DOE) API management system (Apims) reading today, Kuching registered an unhealthy air quality today with API reading of 100 at 1pm, 112 at 2pm, 111 at 3pm, 114 at 4pm, 116 at 5pm and 119 at 6pm. Kuching air turns unhealthy as API hits 112, second worst in Malaysia after Johan Setia
KUCHING, July 25 — Air quality in Kuching has deteriorated to an unhealthy level, with the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading at 112 as of 2pm. The Department of Environment's (DoE) Air Pollution Index Management System (Apims) website showed Kuching had the second highest API reading in the country at 2pm after the 152 recorded in Johan Setia, Klang, Selangor. The API readings for other areas in the state were at moderate level, however Sri Aman (96) and Mukah (92) were hovering close to unhealthy level. An API reading of 51 to 100 is considered moderate, while API readings of 101 to 200 are categorised as unhealthy. This morning, data from the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) website showed Lundu registering an unhealthy API of 125 at 8am and the reading at 12pm improved slightly to 123. Based on yesterday's Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) findings, air quality in Sarawak is expected to deteriorate given the large number of hotspots due to open burning detected near and across the Sarawak-Kalimantan Barat border near Lundu. The ASMC Satellite also detected hotspots across several areas in Sarawak this week, particularly in the western and central regions. Clusters of hotspots were observed in Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, and Betong divisions, with more detected south of Sibu and scattered near Kapit. Smaller numbers appeared near Mukah and northeast of Bintulu. ASMC in its website reported that dry weather persisted over the southern Asean region, including Sarawak, and only a few isolated hotspots were detected in Sarawak and Sumatra, while scattered hotspots were observed in Kalimantan. — The Borneo Post

Haze: Four areas with unhealthy air quality as of 10am July 22
KUALA LUMPUR: Four locations recorded unhealthy air pollutant ondex (API) readings as of 10am Tuesday (July 22), according to the Environment Department's (DOE) Air Pollutant Index Management System (Apims) portal. The affected areas are Seremban, Negeri Sembilan with an API of 155, Nilai (154), Johan Setia in Selangor (151), and Balok Baru in Kuantan, Pahang (140). Under DOE classification, API levels between 101 and 200 are considered unhealthy, especially for high-risk groups such as the elderly, children and individuals with respiratory illnesses. The API is updated hourly based on data from 68 air quality monitoring stations across the country. The public may access real-time information via the DOE website or through the MyJAS EQMS mobile app, available on Google Play and the App Store. The Health Ministry has also issued health guidelines and preventive measures during haze episodes, which are available on its website. – Bernama
