Rafizi reveals wife receives threatening messages
Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): Pandan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli revealed that his wife received threats this morning following an incident involving his son yesterday who was injected by an unknown individual, and the case is currently being investigated by police. He said the threats were received by his wife at 1.12am and 11.02am today, each containing the threat to 'keep quiet, if you continue, you will get AIDS' with a syringe emoji, from the same phone number. 'I think these (threats to family members) will continue because in my opinion the strategic message is that because I am not afraid of summons. I've been through summons case, I've been through the lockup, I've lost my position or whatever, I don't care, right? 'So I think those involved feel it might be easier to influence my decision if it's through my wife,' he said at a press conference in Parliament today. Giving an update on his son's latest situation, Rafizi said initial examinations at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Hospital showed no side effects in the first 24 hours, thus giving confidence to rule out the possibility of an injection in the form of drugs or poison. However, he said, regular blood tests for six months should be done to ensure there are no viral infections such as hepatitis or HIV, since only follow-up tests can provide full confirmation. He said the injection could possibly contain drugs or poison, be in the form of a virus, or just liquid, but without the syringe that the suspect took away, its contents could not be identified immediately. Yesterday, Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the incident was believed to have occurred at about 2pm at the passenger pick-up and drop-off area when the victim, a boy, was reported to be with his mother and their driver. UN Warns Gaza Aid Far Below Minimum Needs As Child Malnutrition Surges
A Palestinian boy runs as aid packages are dropped from an airplane, amid a hunger crisis, in Deir Al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip August 12, 2025. REUTERS/Ramadan Abed WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The United Nations (UN) warned on Wednesday that aid entering the Gaza Strip remains far below what is needed to address the worsening hunger crisis amid Israel's restrictions on the delivery of direly needed humanitarian assistance, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. 'The amount of aid and goods that can be brought into Gaza does not meet the minimum requirements of people who are starving,' UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters, stressing that a ceasefire is 'critically needed' to reach those in need and ensure a sustained, scaled-up aid flow. Citing Gaza's Health Ministry, Dujarric said eight people, including three children, died from malnutrition and starvation in the past 24 hours. bootstrap slideshow 'Such reports have become a daily occurrence,' he added. The World Health Organisation on Wednesday conducted refresher training at Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital – one of only two nutrition stabilisation centres in Gaza City – to update staff on inpatient malnutrition management. The UN spokesman said a record surge in child malnutrition has forced the expansion of such facilities, with over 340 children admitted for treatment so far this year. As of Aug 5, at least 49 child deaths from malnutrition have been confirmed, including 39 under the age of five, Dujarric added. Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza for 18 years and sealed all border crossings on March 2, collapsing a January ceasefire and prisoner swap deal, and further choking humanitarian access. Since October 2023, Israel's brutal offensive has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians – the vast majority women and children – according to local authorities, while devastating Gaza's infrastructure, collapsing its health system, and causing acute food shortages.

Malaysia Records 93,435 Live Births In Second Quarter Of 2025
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- The number of live births in Malaysia fell by 7.1 per cent to 93,435 in the second quarter of 2025, compared to 100,558 during the corresponding period last year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) Demographic Statistics report released today. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said male babies continued to outnumber females, with 48,444 births compared to 44,991, resulting in a sex ratio of 108 males for every 100 females. 'On average, one baby was born every minute, 43 babies every hour and 1,027 babies each day in the second quarter of 2025,' he said in a statement today. He said Selangor recorded the highest number of live births at 17,605, while the Federal Territory of Labuan recorded the lowest with 274 births. "Mothers aged 30 to 39 years recorded the highest live births with 48,503 births, which is 51.9 per cent, followed by mothers aged 20 to 29 years (40.8 per cent), 40 years and over (5.6 per cent) and less than 20 years (1.6 per cent)," he said. Mohd Uzir said a total of 48,408 deaths were recorded in the second quarter of 2025, a decrease of 3.0 per cent compared to 49,906 deaths in the second quarter of 2024. 'The number of deaths for males was 27,607, while females recorded 20,801 deaths, with the gender ratio for deaths being 133 males for every 100 females,' he said. Despite the decline in births, Malaysia's population was estimated at 34.2 million in the second quarter of 2025, up from 34.1 million in the same period of 2024, reflecting a slower growth of 0.5 per cent compared to 1.9 per cent previously. 'To achieve the targeted population growth of 1.1 per cent outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), Malaysia needs to add around 400,000 people annually,' Mohd Uzir said.
