Fire starts at unoccupied Appleton residence that was under renovation
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – On Sunday morning, crews in Appleton worked to put out a fire at a residence that was unoccupied and under renovation. Crews with the Appleton Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 1700 block of North Elinor Street around 8 a.m. on May 18. The initial call noted visible smoke from the roof vents and audible alarms coming from the residence. Passerby reports Fond du Lac garage fire, caused by discarded fire pit ashes When crews arrived, smoke was spotted coming from the structure, which was unoccupied and under renovation. Firefighters forced entry and quickly put out the fire. Nobody was in the home at the time of the fire. Authorities say the damage to the building and its contents is estimated at $100,000. Appleton Fire Department recognizes Lieutenant who is retiring after 29 years
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – After 29 years of serving his community, an Appleton Fire Department Lieutenant is calling it a career. Lieutenant Jeremy 'Pluggy' Hotynski is retiring from Appleton Fire Department just over 29 years after he joined the department. Green Bay Metro Fire Department reminding residents to check smoke alarms ahead of Daylight Savings Lt. Hotynski joined the Appleton Fire Department as a firefighter in November 1995 and was promoted to a driver/engineer in 2001. He spent 12 years in that role before ultimately achieving Lieutenant status in 2013, which he's served as since. APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The Appleton Fire Department is celebrating the lengthy and dedicated career of one of its own after Captain Nelessen retired after 29 years of service. A Facebook post from the Appleton FD has congratulated Captain Jeffrey 'Nelly' Nelessen on his retirement and is celebrating his well-accomplished career. Captain Nelessen spent his entire career in Appleton, joining the Department as a firefighter in July 1995. Nelessen was then promoted to Driver/Engineer in 2001, Lieutenant in 2007, and finally to Captain in 2022. Wisconsin State Patrol Master Trooper retires after 30+ years of dedicated service As he steps away from the job, Nelly wants to say thank you—for the camaraderie, the memories, and the support over the years. The fire service has been more than a career; it has been a family, and he is grateful for every moment spent with the crews at the station and in the field. He encourages firefighters to always train hard, pursue excellence, and take care of one another, both on and off the job. Most of all, he reminds everyone to never lose sight of why we do what we do. 'It has done me good,' said the fox, 'because of the color of the wheat fields.' Alert homeowner helps stop blaze after car fire in Wisconsin, fast fire response saves house
MERRILL, Wis. (WFRV) – The Merrill Fire Department responded to a car fire near a home on River Road in the Town of Merrill on Monday around 2:30 a.m. According to a Facebook post from the Merrill Fire Department, as firefighters were already on their way to the scene, the fire had already spread to a nearby deluxe ice shanty and part of the garage. Appleton Fire Department Lieutenant retires after 26 years of serving community The department says that thanks to the owner's quick action in checking on a strange noise, firefighters were able to control the blaze quickly and prevent it from reaching the house. The car and ice shanty were lost in the fire, and the garage was damaged, but the fire department says the situation could have been much worse if the fire had gone unnoticed. Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies and WPS also assisted at the scene, while Tomahawk EMS provided ambulance coverage until off-duty Merrill firefighters could take over. The post also says later that morning, fire units returned to the site when the ice shanty reignited. The cause of the initial car fire is still being investigated but is considered unintentional. Appleton Fire Department Lieutenant retires after 26 years of serving community
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The Appleton Fire Department is celebrating the career of one of its Lieutenants who is retiring after serving the city for 26 years. Lt. Greg Cullen's time with the Appleton Fire Department began in March 1999 as a firefighter, before he was promoted to a driver/engineer in 2007. Neenah Police Department reveals brand new F-150 squad truck, discusses training Lt. Cullen was promoted to the Lieutenant role in 2009, and has served in the role since. 'Greg will always cherish the camaraderie and humor that made life at the firehouse unforgettable,' the Appleton Fire Department said on Facebook. 'Every crew brought its own mix of laughter, inside jokes and unique personalities, making the toughest days a little lighter.' The post also added a bit of advice from Lt.
