Dynamite results, live blog: Presented by Shark Week
Here's a place to check results and comment along with a new episode of AEW Dynamite, airing live tonight (July 23) at 8 p.m. ET on TBS... and streaming on Max! AEW continues their Chicago residency with the third of six shows at the Aragon Ballroom, as the promotion builds toward next month's Forbidden Door London PPV! Get ready with our preview for the show here! Set for the show: World champ Hangman Page continues to deal with the Death Riders, this time taking on Wheeler Yuta. Timeless Toni Storm faces Billie Starkz, and the minion of Casino Gauntlet contract-holder Athena can win a shot at Storm's Women's World title if she wins this Eliminator Match. Plus, Swerve Strickland takes on The Callis Family's Hecichero... and more! Come right back here at 8 p.m. Eastern when the Dynamite live blog kicks off once the show starts on TBS — and Max. It will be below this line here. Enjoy the show! Times have changed and times are strange. Here I come, but I ain't the same. Mama, I'm liveblogging this here pro wrestling show for these folks. I came in about four minutes late but they are wasting no time going at it hammer and tongs! To the floor, Page throws YUTA into the barricade a couple times, back in the ring, Hanger with a fallaway slam and a big boot, big chops in the corner, Death Valley Driver in the middle of the ring... NOPE! Big lariat, Page lines him up... 'Hangman' Adam Page wins by pinfall with Buckshot. Post-match, Adam grabs a length of chain from ringside! He loads his fist and decks YUTA with a huge right hook and comes down for grounded punches with the chain! He wraps the chain around YUTA's neck, blood pouring from Wheeler's face, he stops short in the ropes and yells at him before relenting and letting him go! Billie Starkz is backstage with Athena for a promo. Athena is wearing a Shark Week fin and it's so adorable that I can barely pay attention to the promo. Anyway she directs Billie in a question and answer session about who she is and what she stands for and how Starkz is gonna take Toni Storm out tonight. (Like out for a nice dinner?) (Listen it's a reasonable question on a show as queer as Dynamite.) FTR jump JetSpeed at the bell and beat them down, Knight falls to the floor so I guess Bailey is legal as they look for an early Shatter Machine, folding press on Harwood for two and now we know he's legal! Waistlock, standing switch, back body drop sends Cash packing, superkick-assisted German suplex almost wins the match for JetSpeed! Stereo planchas from JetSpeed, back inside, FTR regaining control, working Speedball over in the corner, trading elbow for chop, big uppercut from Dax! Whip across, back elbow lays them out, to the floor, looking for a piledriver, countered with a back body drop and one for Wheeler too as we go to break! Back from commercial, JetSpeed mounting a comeback, Knight hits a big DDT on Harwood for two! Kevin lands a shoulder block, Mike out to the apron, UFO splash and an Asai moonsault in stereo... NO DEAL! Dax pulls Knight into the corner and posts his knee a few times! Following it up with the figure four leglock around the post, Bailey breaks it up with a kick combination but Wheeler drops him with a dragon screw to the bad knee! Back inside, Kevin with an inside cradle for two, Dax dragon screws him, FTR with stereo Sharpshooters, Cash on the floor and Dax in the ring! Knight gets the ropes for the break! Power and the Glory... THE KNEES ARE UP! Bailey off the top, Shadows Over Hell shooting star press, Knight crawls over for the cover... DAX HARWOOD KICKS OUT AND WE GO TO BREAK! Back from commercial, Speedball with a big nearfall, back body drop puts them on the apron, elbow smashes, Wheeler comes to assist his teammate and Mike blasts him with a boot before dropping them both with a corkscrew Asai moonsault! Back inside, up top, shooting star, nobody home, Frankensteiner rolled through, Penalty Kick, standing moonsault knee drops... STILL NO! Speedball kicks into the enzuigiri, waistlock, blind tag from Knight, electric chair, standing dropkick Doomsday Device... NOT ENOUGH! To the floor, back body drop sends Cash flying over the timekeeper's barricade, and Bailey dives over it onto him! Back in the ring, Kevin hits the UFO Splash, feet up, inside cradle... KEVIN KNIGHT WILL NOT STAY DOWN! Hurricanrana gets a nearfall on Harwood, he blocks a Frankensteiner from Mike and turns it into a slingshot powerbomb, Kevin grabs a crucifix... SO VERY CLOSE! Victory roll and an assist from Stokely Hathaway... FTR win by pinfall with a victory roll pin from Dax Harwood and some leverage from Stokely Hathaway on Kevin Knight. Post-match, Tony Schiavone interviews FTR in the ring and Big Stoke does the talking. He says Adam Copeland belongs in prison. Everyone in this company knows he's not a professional wrestler and so Copeland had no business putting hands on him last week and he's a horrible human being, a loser, and a cancer to AEW. It doesn't matter what anyone says, because— Enter Adam Copeland, much to Hathaway's chagrin. Stokely demands he stop on the stage and calls for Alter Bridge to be cut. He reminds that Copeland isn't allowed in the vicinity of FTR so what is he doing here. Adam begs off, saying he forgot about that but he made a business deal with some gentlemen and they were willing to come down and do what he can't. And by the way, their business is hurting people. THE HURT SYNDICATE ARE HERE! Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin hit the ring and beat Cash and Dax down until referees and security swarm to pull them apart! It's a fool's errand and FTR end up laid out! Copeland goes to spear Stokely but he pulls a security guard in front of him and hobbles off! Nick Wayne, Mother Wayne, and Kip Sabian are backstage for a promo. Nick says they explained themselves verbally last week, but it's time to start speaking physically, and on Saturday they're gonna show what they're capable of when they are Uncaged. Will Ospreay is shown making his way into the arena and we go to break. Back from commercial, we get a promo from Jon Moxley about how Hangman Page was impressive in victory but now he has to wake up and do it again and wake up and do it again and so on and soforth. As for him, he lost a match and he's not gonna be a bitch about it. He's ready to go again, and this isn't a move, the credits don't roll, the cowboy doesn't ride off. A mistake was made, he will fix it, and by the end of the night we'll find out who the Hangman Page that rode out of Arlington is. He walks off and Marina Shafir takes a beat to mouth something down the barrel of the camera. Will Ospreay makes his entrance and gets on the mic. He says Tony Khan had no idea he'd be here today, he flew out by himself and asked for five minutes just to talk to everybody and let everybody know what's going on. He's been struggling with his neck for ten months, he's had some issues, and usually his medical staff is right on it but he's been keeping this one to himself. That's on him, he should tell medics and referees and the other wrestlers, but he just really wanted to get AEW over the finish line. He made a lot of promises, to Swerve, to Hangman, and to all of us, that he'd play a part in retrieving the world title, and the sacrifice was great but he's proud to say we got the belt back. So here it is— when the Death Riders attacked to him, he was taken to an emergency room, got an MRI, and at C2 and C6 he has herniated discs going into his spinal cord. And that sounds bad, but all the doctors have said it's treatable, and if everything goes right, hopefully he'll be back for Forbidden Door. He thanks Swerve and says he loves him, tells Hangman Page he's glad to have him as his champion, and to the Death Riders, the moment he's fit and healthy, where he's from it's an eye for an eye, so he's coming for each and every one of you fucks! Shane 'Swerve' Strickland embraces Will on the stage and raises his hand. We get a hype reel for the new trio of Julia Hart, Skye Blue, and Thekla. Renee Paquette interviews Willow Nightingale backstage. She says there's a sense of renewal in the air and Hangman Page is champion and if Big Theks feels her Spidey-Sense tingling, that's her in the middle of the ring. And so we go to break. Back from commercial, Renee Paquette interviews the Hurt Syndicate about Adam Copeland. Maxwell Jacob Friedman is upset about them helping Copeland when they haven't done a thing to help him get his title back. He's told it's a business arrangement and they're here to hurt people before Montel Vontavious Porter asks for the room and Bobby Lashley snaps, choking Max against a locker and telling him he's sick of his 'I' 'I' 'I' shit every week and he wants him out of the Hurt Syndicate, giving him a thumbs down. Shelton Benjamin gives him a head shake and Montel gets close for a real sad look and they leave MJF to think about where he's at. Collar and elbow, Starkz gets her in the ropes, side headlock, block the shot off, Storm with a schoolboy pin and a side headlock of her own! Off the ropes, shoulder block, kick, big backbreaker and Toni is in control! Monkey flip, up in the turnbuckles, Billie cuts her off with a chop, legsweep, basement superkick, suicide dive follows! Cannonball senton off the apron and Starkz is in control as we go to break! Back from commercial, Storm lands a chokebomb... NOPE! Single knee facebreaker from Starkz, a Final Cut into the knee, cover for two! Northern lights suplex into a bridge, Billie kicks out, pump kick connects, electric chair in the corner, Toni reverses, victory roll pin, reversed, no deal! Sidestep a boot, big German suplex from Storm! Hip attack in the corner, Storm Zero countered, back body drop into a rana pin... STILL NO! Enzuigiri from Starkz, senton atomico off the top, knees up! TCM Chickenwing is locked in... Toni Storm wins by submission with the TCM Chickenwing. Post-match, Starkz wallops Toni in the face with her own title belt! She calls Athena down, the Fallen Goddess cracks Toni in the face with her title contract and she wants to cash it in... BUT ALEX WINDSOR MAKES THE SAVE AND DOUBLE LEGS HER INTO MOUNTED PUNCHES! And so we go to break. Mat grappling to start, working a wristlock, Hechicero counters to overhooks, trapping Strickland's arms, Shane slips out, whip across, drop down, sliding heel pick, roll through, sleeper, Swerve pops out of it! Rolling around and through, hooking the arm, snapmare, triangle blocked, Strickland rolls him through with his leg, side headlock, Cobra Twist, Hechicero gets the ropes for the break! Hammerlock, spin, Mad Scientist Bomb connects! Shoulder blocks in the corner, chops, Swerve with a vertical suplex, feeling it and we go to break! Back from commercial, Hechicero with a bodyslam, cover for a nearfall! Strickland on the second, diving uppercut connects, step-under, backbreaker, off the ropes, roundhouse kick lays Hechicero out! Up top again, 450 splash... SO CLOSE! Waistlock, Hechicero slips out, inverted monkey flip right into the sleeper hold and then shifting gears to a cross armbar! Rolling him around, legscissors pin for two, rolling thunder reverse STO from Swerve! Lance Archer hits the ring and referee Rick Knox has no choice when he starts attacking Strickland... Shane Strickland wins by disqualification. Post-match, Bandido and Brody King rush down to make the save! They brawl Archer and Hechicero off... BUT KAZUCHIKA OKADA ATTACKS SWERVE FROM BEHIND WITH A STEEL CHAIR! But Strickland knocks him down with a headbutt and horsecollars him with the chair... BUT OKADA BEATS A HASTY RETREAT! Ricochet and Gates of Agony are interviewed backstage by Alicia Atout. Ricochet corrects her, saying it's just GOA now and he's been trying to tell people for weeks but maybe they're listening now after they had two back-to-back victories in one night. They don't care what you think about them, but one way or another you will respect them or fear them, and that's a demand, annoying bird laugh. And so we go to break. Back from commercial, Maxwell Jacob Friedman makes his entrance and gets on the mic. He explains to us that he doesn't need Bobby Lashley to get his world title back. He doesn't need Bob, and as far as Cowboy goes, you wanna call him a coward, he's the coward and a hypocrite. He won't wrestle him unless he executes that contract? Fine, he'll wrestle him fair and square and get his title back around his waist. Enter Mark Briscoe. He says much like Max's kosher pickle he's gonna keep this short, and he's doing all he can to exercise his self-control because he just wants to take this microphone and shove it all the way up MJF's ass but they'll dock his paycheck and he's got kids, man. But Max stole the Casino Gauntlet from him and he wants him in the ring right here in Chicago next week! Friedman says no. Briscoe is wrong when he says Max cost him the match, because if he was supposed to win he would have, but when the pressure is on, Mark loses, but MJF wins with the pressure on, because he's a generational talent, baby. The most complete professional wrestler in the world today. He's gonna be honest and he hopes Briscoe can take this on the chin— he thinks he sucks and he's white trash just like everybody else here, but he's not an idiot, he's not stupid, he knows everybody loves Mark Briscoe. And look at him, he's got a wonky eye, missing teeth, a silly accent, he's funny! He's entertaining! But not even his biggest fans actually think he's a top guy, be honest. Not even his biggest fans think he's anywhere near Friedman's level. He's a joke, a circus clown they parade around for cheap pops and cheap laughs, and these people don't actually respect him. But he knew another guy from Delaware that people did respect and look up to. (George Thorogood?) That guy would have been worth his time, and he can't imagine how depressing it must be to be Mark Briscoe, to look his fans and family in the eyes knowing deep down no one will ever respect him as much as they did his brother Jay. THAT gets Mark off his feet and rushing the ring but MJF runs away! Collar and elbow, giving way to a battle of chops for uppercuts, Briscoe gets him down in the corner, more big right hands, action to the floor and Castagnoli swings him into the barricade over and over to send us to break! Back from commercial, Claudio in control in the ring, stepping on Briscoe's hand but Darby Allin appears in the crowd! Mark with an enzuigiri and a suplex, cover for two! To the floor, suicide dive, Chicken standing on the annoucne desk... NESTEA PLUNGE! Back inside, up top... CASTAGNOLI KICKS OUT OF FROGGY BOW! Up top, jockeying for position, Claudio crotches Briscoe and hooks him for an avalanche bodyslam... NO GOOD! Thumb in the eye, cover for two, Gotch grip reversed, small package... BRISCOE DID IT! Mark Briscoe wins by pinfall with a small package. Post-match, Marina Shafir catches Briscoe with a chop block! Jon Moxley comes down and says Hangman thinks he's a champion because he's walking around with a belt? He's not champion yet and they're here to make sure nobody gets too comfortable! While he says this, Castagnoli drops Briscoe gut-first on the back of an opened chair! 'Hangman' Adam Page is here and he strides confidently right to the ring. He says Mox and he both knew that Jon was lying when he said Hanger didn't want Texas Death, but he does think he believes Moxley when he says that he doesn't think that Page can get up and do it again and again. Not to the Jon Moxley standing here but to the Moxley who carried AEW on his shoulders time and again over these last six years, and so next week on Dynamite, Moxley and Page, one more time. But this time Jon is the challenger and he'll play by Hangman's rules, and everyone but the referee will be banned from ringside, and he already knows his answer is yes, so he'll see him next week, dumbass. Tony Schiavone tells us Tony Khan has already signed off on it and we get a graphic on the tron! That's the show, folks. Editorial: A new CTA day for Edgewater and Uptown. But what about Broadway?
'This is Berwyn,' insisted the voice of the CTA as our train pulled into the new Argyle station on the CTA's Red Line Monday afternoon. Teething troubles, surely forgivable, for the big reopening of four stations on the CTA's Red Line, the transit agency's flagship artery that can take you from Wrigley Field to Rate Field or, for many Chicagoans, from home to work. New stations reopened Sunday with the monikers and (locations of) Lawrence, Berwyn, Argyle and Bryn Mawr, all abutting North Broadway, a street about which there currently is much dissent. We thought we'd check them all out. Our takeaway? None of these stations are architectural marvels and they all have the utilitarian design long familiar to CTA riders. But they're also all improvements. They all have functioning escalators to take you up (but not down) from the turnstiles to the platform. They all have elevators that smell like new cars, not the disgorging of human bodies. We're not crazy about the angled platform seats that seem ready to tip you off at any moment, but we assume the CTA has its reasons, just as it surely does for the endless customer service scrolls that get in the way of what most people at a CTA station really want to know, which is when the next train might be expected. More significantly, all four stations have translucent roofs that, aside from offering decent shade and shelter, feel to us like a bit of a neighborhood nod to the grand terminals of old. At Lawrence, the new design showcases terrific views of the (sadly unrestored) Uptown Theatre and the upper reaches of the historic Aragon Ballroom, just a few feet from the train line. We spent a while drinking in those vistas, which somehow feel more impactful now. But the biggest takeaway? The impact of significantly wider platforms. Not only do these stations feel (and surely are) significantly safer, but the broader expanse of concrete makes standing there all the more pleasant. There's room to walk around (or away) without feeling crammed toward an oncoming train. The stations have more weight and substance. They have the effect of elevating Edgewater and Uptown. Those diverse Chicago neighborhoods have been the subject of much zoning mishegoss of late. In one corner is the 48th Ward's alderman, Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, and Mayor Brandon Johnson, both of whom want to 'upzone' Broadway from Montrose Avenue to Devon Avenue so it might accommodate taller buildings and more affordable housing. In the other are neighborhood activists who argue this will ruin their quality of life. We published the thoughts of one of them, Steve Weinshel, on Sunday. Wienshel argued that Johnson's desire to eliminate the parking mandate for new multifamily developments would be catastrophic and he foresaw masses of new housing on Broadway, with most needing somewhere to park. 'To contemplate adding 10,000 housing units along Edgewater's adjacent stretch of Broadway with minimal off-street parking requirements constitutes urban planning malpractice,' Weinshel wrote. 'Such lunacy will plague Edgewater for generations to come.' Standing on each of those station platforms and looking over at Broadway, you see a streetscape that seems bizarre to defend. Except for the historic Uptown entertainment district, one of the city's overlooked assets, it's a hodgepodge of car washes and mini-malls with surface parking lots that don't feel like they belong, and certainly are no things of beauty. Frankly, they're eyesores. That said, they're filled with small-business owners who fear their convenient parking being swept away by a lobby that often demonizes their needs. And if you live on or around Broadway and struggle to find somewhere to park your car (and most households in this area have at least one), you understandably are nervous about the future. Progressive activists, of course, argue that city leaders should not listen to 'motorheads' and force a change in that behavior. They have a case, and the new stations on the Red Line, making travel by the CTA more attractive, certainly bolster their argument. Meanwhile, the other side says creating an avoidable parking crisis will negatively impact the very people who've worked so hard to improve these neighborhoods over the years, neighborhoods that often offer a first stop for new immigrants to the city and are already dense by the standards of elsewhere. On Monday, we certainly saw a lot more cars on Broadway than people on the CTA platforms, which largely were deserted during the lunch hour. There again, though, it may take time. Thanks to the delays and dysfunction plaguing new public-funded construction in cities such as Chicago, these relatively simple stations were closed for four years (there were some temporary options, at least). People will have to get used to their opening again. And, of course, new stations alone won't get people out of their cars: for that we need more frequent trains, a greater perception of safety and faster journey times. We could use a CTA that expands operations with regard to use and population. All that said, we saw CTA functioning at its best and smoothest Monday afternoon; you might even say the trains glide into the new stations. In an ideal world, denser housing, the elimination of required parking and the end of those mini-malls would be a no-brainer for Broadway because far fewer cars would be needed. But in the meantime, some sort of compromise has to be found that involves Chicagoans respecting the needs of others and refraining from insulting perfectly reasonable positions. These new stations deserve a Broadway that rises to meet them.
