LA Times columnist begs Los Angeles abandon the 2028 Olympics because of Trump's involvement

A Los Angeles Times columnist urged the city of L.A. to abandon the 2028 Olympics over concerns about President Donald Trump's involvement. In a new column for the outlet, Gustavo Arellano lamented that Trump will be heading the task force in charge of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and warned the president would use the spectacle and the city for his own agenda. 'That's why L.A. needs to withdraw from hosting the Olympics — the sooner the better,' Arellano wrote. Arellano said when Los Angeles 2028, the group tasked with organizing the Olympics in the city, chair Casey Wasserman announced Trump as head of the task force, it was like him offering the city a 'giant whoopi cushion.' The columnist went on to trash other top officials from the Trump administration who were present at the announcement. 'On Trump's right was a rash of L.A. haters, some of whom played a prominent role in Southern California's summer of deportations, including Vice President JD Vance and Department of Homeland Security head Kristi Noem,' he wrote. 'Not present, but hailed by Trump during the presser as an 'MVP candidate,' was Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who has made it his life's mission to crush the multicultural metropolis that birthed him.' Wasserman's praise for Trump was, according to Arellano, nothing short of groveling. 'I haven't seen such a suck-up since the last time I vacuumed my dad's pool,' he wrote. 'And you definitely don't entrust kiss a– like Wasserman — I'm still not sure what he did to deserve his powerful LA28 gig, except being the grandson of the late Hollywood mogul Lew Wasserman — with calming down someone like Trump.' 3 Los Angeles Times columnist Gustavo Arellano urged the city of Los Angeles, California, to abandon the 2028 Olympic Games over concerns about President Trump potentially being involved with the events. Gustavo Arellano / L>inkedIn Arellano noted how the federal government was always going to be involved with hosting the Olympic Games but said that the fact that Trump is part of it makes it problematic. 'The federal government was always going to play a role in providing security for the 2028 Olympics, just as it has for previous Games in the U.S. But Trump, as the head of the task force, now gets to personally oversee our own siege,' he wrote. 'With the Games happening in a presidential election year, Trump would love nothing more than to traipse around an L.A. radically transformed by his deportation blitzkrieg to proclaim his mission accomplished and broadcast his conquest to the world.' 3 Arellano's latest column details that President Trump being in charge of the task force for the 2028 Summer Olympics could lead him to use the city as a spectacle for his agenda. / MEGA He also warned that Trump would use the next three years of Olympics prep to 'humiliate blue L.A. at every chance.' Arellano asked readers if they wanted to give Trump and his 'goon squad' more opportunities to make life 'miserable' in Los Angeles. He said he'd rather forego the city hosting the games because 'I don't want my money going toward something that Trump will use to bolster his noxious legacy. I'm not going to cheer on Wasserman as he chums up Trump while la migra continues to terrorize L.A., possibly for months, if not years.' 3 Arellano also criticized multiple Trump officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Department of Homeland Security head Kristi Noem. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect 'La Migra' is a Spanish language term, often used in slang, that refers to U.S. immigration enforcement agencies, primarily U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Border Patrol. 'I don't want to support an event where footage of an occupied L.A. might be as front and center as the Coliseum or badminton. What true Angeleno would?' he added. The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held July 14 to 30. L.A. was announced as the host city in 2017. The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Benilde, Arellano off to Filoil Preseason quarterfinals alongside Letran, EAC

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Arellano University crushed San Beda University and Jose Rizal University, respectively, on Wednesday to complete the four NCAA teams advancing to Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup quarterfinals. The Blazers waxed hot from downtown to punish the Red Lions with a 102-64 win while the surging Chiefs cruised to their fifth win in a row after an 82-60 victory over the Heavy Bombers. Benilde launched 15 huge three-pointers, four of which came from veteran guard Tony Ynot as he finished with 12 points, six assists, and three rebounds against his old team to help his current one improve to 6-1. Bonn Daja and transferee Shawn Umali chipped in 13 and 10 markers each in a balanced offense for the Blazers. The Red Lions, meanwhile, fell to a 2-4 card with three more games in their schedule, taking on Emilio Aguinaldo College, Lyceum of the Philippines University, and rival Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the coming days. Earlier, Arellano remained unbeaten with King Vinoya ruling on both ends after tallying 29 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and one assist as the Chiefs ended the elimination round with an impressive 6-3 card. Benilde and Arellano complete an unlikely top-four NCAA team in the preseason showcase alongside Letran and EAC. The resurgent Knights currently hold a 7-1 record to lead the NCAA bracket while the Generals feature a 6-1 card. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

T-mc Ongotan steers Arellano past LPU; Mikey Cortez stars late in DLSU win vs. NU

T-mc Ongotan saved the day for the surging Arellano University, gutting out a narrow 78-76 win against Lyceum of the Philippines University in the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Wednesday. The versatile guard buried the game-winning layup off his own defensive rebound to give the Chiefs a slim two-point lead in the final 56 seconds of the fourth quarter. The Pirates had several chances to tie or seize the lead, but back-to-back turnovers proved costly, allowing Arellano to pull away and secure its third straight win for a 4–3 record. Ongotan tallied 10 points laced with three rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block while Charles Libang chipped in 11 markers, six boards, and a steal as Arellano. The win marked Arellano's third straight upset over NCAA Season 100 Final Four teams, having previously taken down defending champion Mapúa University and perennial contender San Beda University. Meanwhile, De La Salle University averted a collapse with a 69-64 escape victory against National University to preserve its unbeaten slate in the preseason showcase. The Green Archers nearly wasted a 13-point deficit, but hung tough behind timely baskets from Mikey Cortez, the younger brother of transferee Jacob, as they went 3-0 in the UAAP bracket. Cortez sank the layup that gave the reigning UAAP champions a slim 63-59 lead before burying a massive three-pointer off a cross-court pass from Mason Amos to make it a five-point cushion in the final 28 seconds. Kean Baclaan then sealed it from the stripe to deal his former team its second straight loss. Baclaan top-scored with 18 points while the older Cortez chipped in 11 markers, five rebounds, and two steals. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Graduating Chiefs Berdal, Curamen, Villados exit with legacy cemented in Arellano

NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News In their final act as part of the Arellano Chiefs, the graduating trio of Carl Berdal, Anfernee Curamen, and Adrian Villados delivered a performance worthy of a storybook ending. The veterans spearheaded Arellano University's 24-26, 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 come-from-behind win against Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Game 2 to snag the school's historic breakthrough NCAA men's volleyball title. Seasoned outside spiker Berdal picked up right where he left off in Game 1, exploding for 16 points and six digs in the clincher. Curamen stamped his class at the net with 12 markers, including three blocks, while battle-tested setter Villados orchestrated the offense with 24 excellent sets. Together, the graduating trio capped their final dance with the ultimate prize: a championship trophy 16 years in the making. "Sobrang saya, 'di ko ma-explain. Walang words ang makaka-explain kung gaano ako kasaya ngayon kasi first time in history na mag-champion ang Arellano e," Curamen said. Berdal added, "Sobrang saya kasi marami talaga kaming pinagdaanan and nagbunga lahat ng sakripisyo, hindi pagkakaunawaan sa team, away, tampuhan." The three played crucial roles in Arellano's improbable title run. Berdal, who had to overcome a knee injury late in Season 98 before making his way back in Season 99, was a consistent force for the Chiefs, amassing a total of 255 points in the elimination round before leaving it all out in the Final Four, where they had to hurdle a twice-to-beat Mapua University. Curamen was also one of the pillars of Arellano's net defense, collecting 45 blocks in 18 games en route to a 186-point haul through the regular season. And at the center of it all was Villados with the former Alas Pilipinas Men pool member anchoring the attack with his masterful playmaking instincts. "Sobrang proud ako sa kanila (graduating player) kasi tinrabaho nila 'to lalo na si Carl na galing sa injury tapos last season huli na siya bumalik pero ngayon pinush niya 'yung sarili niya," Arellano head coach Bryan Vitug said. As they bid farewell to Arellano, the trio is confident that the winning culture they've built in Legarda will live on. In fact, the Game 2 showdown against the Knights was proof that the future of Arellano is in good hands with holdovers AC Guinto, Jiwen Sinuto, and Jake Pangilinan showing they can carry the torch forward. Guinto top-scored with 17 points laced with 20 receptions while opposite spiker Sinuto chipped in 14 markers. Rising middle blocker Jake Pangilinan tallied 10 points, none bigger than the championship-clinching quick attack in the fourth set. "Itong championship na nakuha namin, ito 'yung nagpo-prove na kaya talaga ng Arellano, na makapasok sa finals, makakuha ng championship," Villados shared. "And itong championship na 'to makakapag-boost sa morale nu'ng mga maiiwan. Experience din 'to para sa mga maiiwan. Positive kami na kaya pa rin nila next season kahit wala na kami." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
