Women's Euros: England avoid 'disaster' as big win gets champions back on track

They arrived at the Women's Euros as champions - and finally looked like champions again. Where the Lionesses were sloppy in the opening defeat to France, they were sublime against the Netherlands. put England's European title defence right back on track when early elimination was a real possibility. And while two goals were scored by Lauren James, along with one apiece from Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone, Alessia Russo shone with three assists. "After the France game, we looked at ourselves a lot as individuals and how we can all be better and obviously within the team," Arsenal Champions League winner Russo said. "I think that going into this game we wanted to start with that, setting our own standards high on and off the ball and we definitely did that. "I think when that's our standard as a team, then the sky's the limit." From being on the brink, they're now back on track. But it's how to deal with pressure that pleased England manager Sarina Wiegman, having admitted she felt a "little tension" going into the clash with her home country on Wednesday. "There are always things going well and not going well and we don't make it a disaster," she said. There is still a quarter-final to qualify for, which could require beating Wales on Sunday. Now their neighbours only have pride to play for after being on the brink of elimination - unless they can improbably win at least 9-0 and hope France beat the Netherlands. Read more from Sky News: Of course, expectations were much lower for the Welsh at their first major tournament. But there was still a memorable moment in losing 4-1 to France. The equaliser that gave a flicker of hope came from Jess Fishlock, the holder of the country's appearance and goal records. So something for the Lionesses to be wary of in their British showdown in Switzerland on Sunday. Russo said: "We'll work hard, we'll work until we can't run anymore, we stick together."

Recalls and absentees as Ireland squad named for US friendlies

IRELAND BOSS CARLA Ward has named a 23-player squad for an international friendly double-header against the United States later this month. Katie McCabe is among a number of players unavailable for selection, while Ellen Molloy and Hayley Nolan receive their first call-ups under Ward. Izzy Atkinson also returns to the squad. Aoife Mannion, Heather Payne, Tara O'Hanlon, Jamie Finn, Lily Agg, Jess Ziu and Leanne Kiernan are the other unavailable players, while Aoibheann Clancy is being given time and support following the recent passing of her mother, Siobhan. Wexford star Molloy is recalled after impressing in the SSE Women's Premier Division, and is one of two home-based players in the squad alongside Ruesha Littlejohn. Ellen Molloy (file photo). Atkinson departed Palace yesterday, but now gets a fresh opportunity on the international stage. McCabe confirmed her unavailability last week after a hectic season, which she finished as a Champions League winner with Arsenal. Ward later explained: 'She's on the verge of burnout, as are some others. It won't just be Katie that won't be travelling. There's probably going to be a number.' The first game against the world number one will take place on Thursday, 26 June in Denver, Colorado, with the teams meeting again on Sunday, 29 June in Cincinnati. 'The two games against USA are an opportunity for us to work together on a number of things – both on and off the pitch – as we build towards the Uefa Nations League Play-Off against Belgium in October,' Ward said in an FAI press release. 'When these games were first proposed to us we knew that we would be without certain players, but that opens the door for others to step up. We are building, camp by camp, so we are looking forward to getting together again and putting in some extra work that will stand to us moving forward.' US manager Emma Hayes. Chelsea defender Naomi Girma will be the one exception, the manager told ESPN, with captain Lindsey Heaps (Horan) of Lyon and Arsenal Champions League winner Emily Fox among the expected absentees. 'This is the first opportunity, and the only one, for them to take a break between now and the World Cup in two years,' said Hayes on Futbol W. 'And player welfare and rest and recovery are also important.' PSG vs Arsenal LIVE streaming info, Champions League 2024-25: When, where to watch semifinal second leg; Predicted XIs

Declan Rice has already provided two magic moments that will become part of Arsenal folklore during his side's run to the Champions League semifinals but says more will be required if the dream is not to die against Paris St. Germain on Wednesday. Arsenal head to the Parc des Princes trailing 1-0 after last week's first leg in north London, and the odds are stacked against it reaching the final for the second time, having lost to Barcelona in the 2006 showpiece also in Paris. The midfielder scored with two stunning free kicks in the 3-0 quarterfinal first leg win at home to Real Madrid with Arsenal then also winning 2-1 in the Bernabeu. The pressure ratchets up another notch on Wednesday, though, and Rice says he, or one of his teammates, will have to conjure another unforgettable moment if Mikel Arteta's side is to prevail and reach the final in Munich.
