Recalls and absentees as Ireland squad named for US friendlies

The 4211-06-2025
IRELAND BOSS CARLA Ward has named a 23-player squad for an international friendly double-header against the United States later this month.
Katie McCabe is among a number of players unavailable for selection, while Ellen Molloy and Hayley Nolan receive their first call-ups under Ward. Izzy Atkinson also returns to the squad.
Aoife Mannion, Heather Payne, Tara O'Hanlon, Jamie Finn, Lily Agg, Jess Ziu and Leanne Kiernan are the other unavailable players, while Aoibheann Clancy is being given time and support following the recent passing of her mother, Siobhan.
Wexford star Molloy is recalled after impressing in the SSE Women's Premier Division, and is one of two home-based players in the squad alongside Ruesha Littlejohn.

Crystal Palace defender Nolan, meanwhile, last featured for Ireland on their most recent US Tour in April 2023. Atkinson departed Palace yesterday, but now gets a fresh opportunity on the international stage.
McCabe confirmed her unavailability last week after a hectic season, which she finished as a Champions League winner with Arsenal. Ward later explained: 'She's on the verge of burnout, as are some others. It won't just be Katie that won't be travelling. There's probably going to be a number.'
The first game against the world number one will take place on Thursday, 26 June in Denver, Colorado, with the teams meeting again on Sunday, 29 June in Cincinnati.
'The two games against USA are an opportunity for us to work together on a number of things – both on and off the pitch – as we build towards the Uefa Nations League Play-Off against Belgium in October,' Ward said in an FAI press release.

'We will be coming up against the best team in women's football, so we will have a plan for those games but it's also important that we make the most out of this camp as a whole.
'When these games were first proposed to us we knew that we would be without certain players, but that opens the door for others to step up. We are building, camp by camp, so we are looking forward to getting together again and putting in some extra work that will stand to us moving forward.'

The US will also be down bodies for the double-header, with Emma Hayes resting their European-based players and the squad set to be made up of mostly domestic talent.
Chelsea defender Naomi Girma will be the one exception, the manager told ESPN, with captain Lindsey Heaps (Horan) of Lyon and Arsenal Champions League winner Emily Fox among the expected absentees.
'This is the first opportunity, and the only one, for them to take a break between now and the World Cup in two years,' said Hayes on Futbol W. 'And player welfare and rest and recovery are also important.'

Conference League third qualifying round: All you need to know

Thursday, 14 August Shamrock Rovers (0) v Ballkani (1), Tallaght Stadium, 8pm Besiktas (4) St Patrick's Athletic (1), Tupras Stadyumu, 7pm ONLINE Shamrock Rovers v Ballkani is available to stream on LOITV. There'll be a live blog on RTÉ.ie and the RTÉ News app. WEATHER The sun was splitting the stones on Wednesday, but it'll be more overcast in Dublin ahead of Shamrock Rovers' tussle with Kosovan side Ballkani. Temperatures will still hover around the 20-degree mark however on a balmy evening. In Istanbul, St Pat's can expect warm conditions, with temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s at kick-off. Hoops have work to do It's a big night in Tallaght as Shamrock Rovers aim to keep their European ambitions alive. The SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division leaders were not at their best in last week's first leg, falling to a 1-0 loss thanks to Sunday Adetunji's second-half effort, but they're far from out of this. A boisterous home crowd will look to get their team over the line and set up a play-off against either Larne or Portuguese side Santa Clara, who lead 3-0 after the first leg at the Ballymena Showgrounds. Boss Stephen Bradley knows what Adetunji is capable of. The 27-year-old Nigerian played - and scored - against Rovers in the colours of North Macedonia's Shkupi when the clubs met in the Europa League qualifiers back in 2022. Richie Towell was involved in that tie, which the Hoops won 5-2 on aggregate. He expects his old side to progress tonight but warned: "The thing is they have the boy Sunday Adetunji up front. We played against him when he played for Shkupi, a really good player. "He's very similar to Tammy Abraham (tormentor of St Pat's last Thursday). He's that big, tall, gangly, physical presence, he can run in behind, he has a good touch, so he'll be a real target man for Ballkani." Last year Larne beat Ballkani on penalties in the Conference League third qualifying round. Shamrock Rovers would later beat Larne 4-1 in Belfast after both clubs reached the league phase. The Hoops will need to improve on their first-leg showing, but they certainly have the tools to get the job done here. Team news: Graham Burke is back from injury in a big boost for the hosts, but the omission of Jack Byrne from the squad has raised eyebrows. Byrne is not injured, with speculation mounting there's a rift between the player and management. Aaron McEneff is also unavailable. Player view - Ed McGinty (Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper): "They move the ball well, they move it at speed and they've got individual threats going forward. It's just about keeping the heads down. We don't really get too far ahead of ourselves. It's about working hard and trusting what we do on the ball." Saints playing for pride in Turkey St Pat's were blown away by a quality, ruthless first-half showing from Besiktas last week. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men came to Dublin under pressure after being hammered by Shakhtar Donetsk 6-2 on aggregate in the Europa League second-round qualifiers. However their big names turned on the style to crush any hopes of an upset, Tammy Abraham's hat-trick helping them to a 4-0 lead at the break. The big plus for Stephen Kenny was his team's performance on the turnaround. Simon Power scored a super individual effort before Mason Melia spurned a golden opportunity to nick a second. They'll hope to avoid a morale-damaging hammering at Tupras Stadyumu before focusing fully on domestic duties. "It's one of those where you have to gee the players up to go and enjoy the experience," said ex-Dundalk striker David McMillan on this week's RTÉ Soccer Podcast. "I've played in Ukraine, I've played in Belarus, the atmosphere can be - in Turkey in particular - absolutely incredible. Those games are some of the best experiences players will have. "It's disappointing for Pat's that they go there really for damage limitation... but as a player you just have to enjoy the experience. As a League of Ireland player, you don't get to play that type of opposition all that often." Besiktas had no league game at the weekend so will be ominously fresh. Meanwhile Kenny will have one eye on Sunday evening's massive FAI Cup last-16 clash against Shelbourne in Inchicore. He has a number of injury concerns and will have to utilise his squad. Team news: The Saints are without Zack Elbouzedi (shoulder), Aidan Keena (thigh), Sean Hoare (calf), Anto Breslin (knee), and Romal Palmer (hamstring). Manager view - Stephen Kenny (St Pat's): "(Besiktas) is an institution in Turkey. It's an incredible stadium, really incredible, and it's a very passionate home support. The players worked hard to get into Europe. Now we're here we want to put in a good performance. Obviously there will be some changes, all of the players can't play all of the games. Sunday is important as well so we've got to look at all that."

Boost for Shelbourne as Uefa approve Tolka Park for Conference League play-off

SHELBOURNE HAVE RECEIVED a huge boost ahead of their Uefa Conference League play-off after it was confirmed that the home leg will be played at Tolka Park. It's understood that upgrades made to the stadium as well as the operational aspects of how the League of Ireland champions have managed their European games so far have been enough to convince Uefa delegates to grant a licence for the Drumcondra venue. Advertisement It had been anticipated that Shels would have to move the home leg of their Europa League third round qualifier with Rijeka last night to Tallaght Stadium in order to meet ground regulations and requirements from the governing body. However, Tolka also won the seal of approval for that tie and despite losing the game they did enough with how the event was run to keep such a crucial fixture on their own patch. St Patrick's Athletic, for example, had to move last week's Conference League home tie with Besiktas to the home of Shamrock Rovers and it has traditionally been the case for League of Ireland teams – other than the Hoops – who make it beyond the second round of Europe to move their home fixture. Shels are now due to play at Tolka next Thursday (21 August) against the winner of Linfield and Vikingur with the away leg on 28 August. The Irish League side trail 2-1 from the first leg and should David Healy's side produce a comeback it will be a repeat of the All-Ireland derby from the first round of this year's Champions League qualifiers earlier this summer.

Career lessons and soccer tactics: What will Andy Moran bring to Mayo?

AFTER THE BLUNT break-up that ended Kevin McStay's tenure, the appointment of a recent Mayo GAA hero has at least reinjected a bit of hope into a county which has drifted away from All-Ireland contention. Mission one already accomplished for Andy Moran. What's to follow will be harder to achieve, but it's a task he has been preparing for ever since the moment he announced his retirement. In one of the exit interviews from his playing days, there was little doubt what Moran had in mind as he spoke about going down the coaching route. 'I've been dreaming about winning an All-Ireland since I was five years of age. Hopefully, my story isn't finished with Mayo yet,' he said. The 41-year-old's career was a story of personal growth. Having emerged as a roaming half-back/half-forward, a broken leg and cruciate injury triggered his transformation into a full-forward. He studied soccer strikers to learn the inside movement required, as well as contemporaries such as Paul Geaney, Con O'Callaghan, and Ollie Murphy. His career as a gym owner, much like TJ Reid, helped him produce his best football into his thirties. Following his 15th season of inter-county football, Moran was named Footballer of the Year for 2017, a day after his 34th birthday. James Horan convinced him to give one more year in 2019. In a similar vein, one of Moran's first calls is likely to be to 33-year-old former teammate Cillian O'Connor, enquiring whether the championship's record scorer fancies another spin. Mayo's Andy Moran taking on Michael Fitzsimons of Dublin during the 2017 All-Ireland final. Tommy Dickson / INPHO Tommy Dickson / INPHO / INPHO Moran would've relished Gaelic football's new rules (much like O'Connor would). He coached a Monaghan side who were early embracers of those opportunities. The Farney's 58 two-pointers were more than any other county, averaging 4.5 per game. Attacking returns have too often been Mayo's greatest fallibility. After joining Gabriel Bannigan's backroom team last autumn, Moran identified moving the ball quicker as a priority and impressed the opportunity of squeezing up on opponents. They were beliefs that chimed with the intent of the Football Review Committee's modifications. 'I believe in football being a forward-based game, in terms of being progressive,' he told the Farney Army Pod last October. He added: 'I think (Gaelic) has taken an awful lot from soccer, but I think it has taken the bad stuff if you ask me. If you look at the real top teams now playing soccer, all their passes are forward. They might go back once, but the next one has to be forward. We need to take that into our game, where it's more of a forward transition game than a backward passing game. Advertisement 'We're nearly taking soccer from back in the 1992 Euros, pass it back to the keeper and use it, but we need to get to the modern soccer, which is pass the ball forward. 'Like most teams, when they're attacking, they've five fellas across the front line. If you look at Arsenal now, they'd have Saka one side, they'd have a left back the other side, Martinelli, Havertz, and somebody else in the middle. They'd have five guys up. 'In Gaelic, we're taking the bad stuff out of the possession, instead of getting it forward.' That experience of Ulster football served as a final apprenticeship to sharpen him for his home role. Moran set about learning his trade outside the county bounds as he was appointed Leitrim manager ahead of the 2022 season. His tenure featured some bad luck in penalty shoot-outs. They were eliminated in the Tailteann Cup quarter-finals by Sligo on penalties in 2022 before the lowest point, losing to New York at Gaelic Park in another shoot-out. His third and final year brought promotion from Division 4 and, doubling up as U20 manager, a stunning triumph over Mayo. Andy Moran was appointed Leitrim manager ahead of the 2022 season. James Crombie / INPHO James Crombie / INPHO / INPHO The Leitrim County Board hailed his 'boundless levels of energy and enthusiasm' upon his departure that summer. With Monaghan, Moran was involved in a Division 2 title and a run to the All-Ireland quarter-finals. His Mayo backroom team has also caught the eye. Colm Boyle is another hero of that 2010s era, who, like Moran, earned a reputation as an insightful pundit upon his retirement. Paddy Tally is coming off a tumultuous year as Derry manager, but holds an impressive coaching CV. He has been involved in All-Irelands with Tyrone (2003) and Kerry (2022), while helping Down to the 2010 final. Moran's final game as a player was the All-Ireland semi-final loss to Dublin in 2019. Since then, the goalkeeper, the entire defence bar Stephen Coen, half of the midfield pairing, and four of the substitutes called upon that day have retired. Enough time has passed to ease the potential awkwardness of managing former teammates. The slight fall off in support highlights that expectations aren't immediately set sky high, although Moran knows where the bar is fixed from his playing career. The board statement reaffirmed their belief in the county's stature in the game when stating: 'The level of interest and calibre of applicants once again highlights the strength and reputation of Mayo football.' Their victory over Tyrone and the nature of their narrow loss to Donegal underline that Mayo aren't far away on their day. Their defeat to Cavan and shaky Connacht displays show that they are miles away when off form. An early aim will be to bring the consistent application which defined Moran's career. Another will surely be to halt Galway's five-in-a-row Connacht bid. The playing resources aren't what they were in his playing days. He will need to build around the remaining leaders from then. Beyond recruiting Cillian O'Connor, pressing matters include getting the most out of the remaining years in Aidan O'Shea (perhaps in an Andy Moran-type role) and a clear run of fitness for Paddy Durcan, Tommy Conroy, Diarmuid O'Connor, and Eoghan McLaughlin. Ryan O'Donoghue has been too often starved of support. He needs back-up. Otherwise, teams that succeed in snuffing out his influence will continue to beat Mayo. Given his career trajectory, Moran will hope to inspire improvements from the in-between generation, who are approaching their peak years. Infusing some of the young stars from their U20 Connacht champions is another important step. That team produced some exciting attacking displays, which are just what Mayo need, before falling one point short in an All-Ireland semi-final. Their minor teams have also reached the semi-finals in the past two campaigns, which will form the basis of next year's U20 offering. Translating that promise to higher grades hasn't always come easily. Still, if they can add those attacking reinforcements, there is enough of a base there to regain their status as a contender. The new man will need patience and loyalty from the board, but he could be just the man to return the feel-good factor to Mayo football.
