Recalls and absentees as Ireland squad named for US friendlies

IRELAND BOSS CARLA Ward has named a 23-player squad for an international friendly double-header against the United States later this month. Katie McCabe is among a number of players unavailable for selection, while Ellen Molloy and Hayley Nolan receive their first call-ups under Ward. Izzy Atkinson also returns to the squad. Aoife Mannion, Heather Payne, Tara O'Hanlon, Jamie Finn, Lily Agg, Jess Ziu and Leanne Kiernan are the other unavailable players, while Aoibheann Clancy is being given time and support following the recent passing of her mother, Siobhan. Wexford star Molloy is recalled after impressing in the SSE Women's Premier Division, and is one of two home-based players in the squad alongside Ruesha Littlejohn. Ellen Molloy (file photo). Atkinson departed Palace yesterday, but now gets a fresh opportunity on the international stage. McCabe confirmed her unavailability last week after a hectic season, which she finished as a Champions League winner with Arsenal. Ward later explained: 'She's on the verge of burnout, as are some others. It won't just be Katie that won't be travelling. There's probably going to be a number.' The first game against the world number one will take place on Thursday, 26 June in Denver, Colorado, with the teams meeting again on Sunday, 29 June in Cincinnati. 'The two games against USA are an opportunity for us to work together on a number of things – both on and off the pitch – as we build towards the Uefa Nations League Play-Off against Belgium in October,' Ward said in an FAI press release. 'When these games were first proposed to us we knew that we would be without certain players, but that opens the door for others to step up. We are building, camp by camp, so we are looking forward to getting together again and putting in some extra work that will stand to us moving forward.' US manager Emma Hayes. Chelsea defender Naomi Girma will be the one exception, the manager told ESPN, with captain Lindsey Heaps (Horan) of Lyon and Arsenal Champions League winner Emily Fox among the expected absentees. 'This is the first opportunity, and the only one, for them to take a break between now and the World Cup in two years,' said Hayes on Futbol W. 'And player welfare and rest and recovery are also important.' Ireland WNT squad Goalkeepers: Courtney Brosnan (Everton), Grace Moloney (Unattached), Sophie Whitehouse (Charlton Athletic) Defenders: Jessie Stapleton (West Ham United), Anna Patten (Aston Villa), Caitlin Hayes (Brighton & Hove Albion), Hayley Nolan (Crystal Palace), Chloe Mustaki (Bristol City), Megan Campbell (Unattached) Midfielders: Denise O'Sullivan (North Carolina Courage), Megan Connolly (Lazio), Tyler Toland (Blackburn Rovers), Ruesha Littlejohn (Shamrock Rovers), Marissa Sheva (Sunderland), Ellen Molloy (Wexford) Forwards: Kyra Carusa (San Diego Wave), Abbie Larkin (Crystal Palace), Amber Barrett (Standard Liege), Lucy Quinn (Birmingham City), Emily Murphy (Newcastle United), Saoirse Noonan (Celtic), Erin Healy (Adelaide United), Izzy Atkinson (Unattached). Golf expert names unrepeatable reason why Rory McIlroy will win PGA 'battle royal' and make it 2 Majors in a row

Masters winner McIlroy will bid to equal Sir Nick Faldo's UK record of six Majors as he returns to Quail Hollow US Tour legend Rich Beem reckons Rory McIlroy is the hot favourite to win this week's US PGA and get halfway to a calendar Grand Slam. Beem is predicting a 'battle royal' with world No.1 Scottie Scheffler in the second Major of the season. ‌ Masters winner McIlroy will bid to equal Sir Nick Faldo's UK record of six Majors as he returns to Quail Hollow, where he has already won four times. ‌ Jordan Spieth dubs the North Carolina venue 'Rory McIlroy Country Club'. And 2002 PGA champion Beem joked: 'I think 'Quail McIlroy Hollow' is the official name of the course these days – it seems like he owns the joint. 'He plays it differently to anybody else. He is able to take the bunkers out of play and it plays right into his hands. 'His final round last year was a masterpiece.' Victory would put McIlroy halfway to completing a feat never achieved – winning all four modern Majors in the same year. ‌ And the last leg will be a home Open for the Irishman at Royal Portrush. 'Everyone's talking about the Grand Slam but Rory's only got one leg of it,' Beem warned. 'Get No.2 first. 'Expectations could well slow Rory down. But it would be amazing.' ‌ Scheffler gave warning he is back in the groove by posting a 31-under par score to win his first PGA Tour event of the season at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. 'If Rory had shown up and had his absolute A game, he was not going to beat Scottie last week,' Beam said. 'But it all depends on the course. When Rory has his best golf at Quail Hollow, Scottie is not going to beat him. It could be a battle royal.' ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. "If there's a guitar comes in here in a minute it's unbelievable. "It is! It's Hells Bells, AC/DC. Aw man! You can't beat a bit of AC/DC man." And now one of his former rivals from Scottish football gave a nod in the Gers hero's direction as he took in one of AC/DC's shows on their US Tour out at Detroit. That man was St Johnstone cult hero Nick Dasovic, who is now assistant boss at Detroit City FC. Dasovic locked horns with McCoist many times in the course of six years in the Scottish game from 1996 onwards. So he spared a thought for the Gers icon when the opening chimes and guitar riff of Hells Bells kicked in out in Detroit. Filming the scene on stage, Dasovic said: "Ally McCoist, this one's for you brother. St Johnstone!" Sharing the clip on X overnight, he wrote: "Ally I know you love this song!!! Live in Detroit City. Carlos Santana's tour derailed again following COVID diagnosis

Carlos Santana has postponed a second Texas concert after testing positive for COVID-19, the San Francisco guitarist's manager confirmed. The 77-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician was set to perform Wednesday, April 23, at the Smart Financial Center in Sugar Land as part of his Oneness Tour 2025, but is now resting at his hotel following a positive test. The news comes one day after Santana was hospitalized for dehydration and forced to cancel his San Antonio show at the Majestic Theatre. 'Unfortunately, out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to also postpone this evening's show in Sugar Land,' Santana's longtime manager, Michael Vrionis, said in a statement. 'Carlos experienced dehydration yesterday, and has since tested positive for COVID. I am happy to report that Carlos is doing well and will be back on his US Tour this Friday.' Fans of the guitarist, renowned for classics such as 'Black Magic Woman' and the chart-topping hit 'Smooth,' are advised to hold onto their tickets as both Texas shows will be rescheduled. The tour launched April 16 in Highland, California, and Santana is still expected to perform in Oklahoma this weekend and later in Nashville and New Orleans. A Las Vegas residency is scheduled to follow. Despite recent health setbacks, including a fall earlier this year and previous hospitalizations, Santana recently told the Associated Press that fans could expect 'a whole lot of energy and freshness and high consciousness and hope and courage' from the tour.

Guitar Legend Carlos Santana Postpones Second Show, Shares Health Update

Carlos Santana cancelled a second consecutive show on Wednesday, April 23 after it was revealed that the guitar legend has been diagnosed with COVID, according to a post on his official social media channels. This comes after he was forced to cancel his April 22 date due to a medical emergency that sent the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer to the hospital. 'Santana is postponing his Oneness Tour 2025 show at Smart Financial Center, tonight (Wednesday, April 23, 2025) in Sugar Land, Texas,' the announcement reads. 'Mr. Santana has tested positive for Covid and is resting at his hotel.' The statement goes on to quote Santana's manager Michael Vrionis. 'As some of you are aware, we postponed last night's show in San Antonio. Unfortunately, out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to also postpone this evening's show in Sugar Land. Carlos experienced dehydration yesterday, and has since tested positive for Covid. I am happy to report that Carlos is doing well and will be back on his US Tour this Friday in Thackerville, OK,' Vrionis said in the statement. 'We appreciate everyone's well wishes and concern. Carlos is looking forward to seeing you all very soon,' Vrionis added. The message encouraged fans to 'hang onto your tickets - we will advise on the rescheduled show date as soon as possible.' Santana's other U.S. dates include a May 1 stop at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival followed by a residency at the House of Blues in Las Vegas running from May 14-25. He's scheduled to start a European tour on June 9 in Lodz, Poland. Prior to Tuesday's medical emergency, Santana posted a message on social media thanking his fans for the previous show in Albuquerque, N.M. 'To the Amazing fans in Albuquerque, NM. From our hearts, we wish to thank you for showing up with such beautiful energy and love in the cold & rain. You danced, you sang, and you braved the elements like true warriors of light. Your warmth and passion lit up the night more than any spotlight ever could. It was truly an honor to share our hearts music with you.' The post included a picture of the crowd shot by his wife and drummer, Cindy Blackman Santana.
