Husband not co-operating with probe into wife's murder

A mother walking home alone through a city park at night is stabbed in the neck and left to die. Ten years after the brutal murder and following an inquest, police have made a last-ditch plea for information to track down her killer and whoever helped organise what police believe was a targeted attack. Prabha Arun Kumar was found unresponsive and bleeding profusely in Parramatta Park in Sydney's west on March 7, 2015, and died in hospital hours later. The 41-year-old was on the phone to her husband Arun in India when she was stabbed in the neck, with Mr Kumar reporting hearing his wife confronted by her attacker. He was having an affair while overseas in India at the time of the killing and remains a significant focus of the police investigation, amid suspicion he may have been involved in arranging her murder, the inquest was told. He received $631,000 in financial benefits including workers' compensation, superannuation and unpaid leave following Ms Kumar's death, the inquest was told, and deleted call history and WhatsApp messages as he waited to board a plane to Sydney after his wife was stabbed. Mr Kumar has never been charged over his wife's death and police have not identified her attacker. Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi said Mr Kumar was not co-operating with police. "He was invited ... to attend the inquest and wasn't compelled, and he didn't respond to that," he said. "Telecommunication records of suspects, persons of interest, witnesses are very important to criminal investigations and coronial matters ... without those records, it makes it more difficult for investigators to establish where the truth lies." Det Supt Doueihi addressed media on Tuesday, flanked by Ms Kumar's sister Shuba who has been in Australia for the inquest. He conceded the investigation was at a dead end, with a $1 million reward announced in October 2024 not eliciting any major information. Two people involved in suspicious sightings in the area on the night of the attack - a person seen in a nearby golf club and another hiding in a resident's backyard - have not been identified. "I cannot see this investigation progressing without the assistance of the public, it is absolutely essential," Det Supt Doueihi said. "I'm confident that there is someone out there that knows what happened, that knows who is responsible for this crime." The death is being treated as a targeted attack and police have dismissed any thought it was linked to robbery, sexual violence or racial bias. Investigators previously flew to India and interviewed a number of individuals, including Mr Kumar. The husband, who lived in Bangalore with the couple's daughter, flew to Australia when he learned of his wife's death. She was said to be only weeks away from moving back to India because she missed her family. The case has been referred to the NSW Police unsolved homicide squad for further investigation.

Stabbing death of Prabha Arun Kumar in 2015 ruled a 'targeted killing' by coroner

A coroner has found the death of a 41-year-old mother in Western Sydney a decade ago was the result of homicide committed by an unknown person, insisting police continue their investigation into her "targeted killing". Indian national Prabha Arun Kumar died after being stabbed multiple times in the neck by a person dressed in black while walking home alone through Parramatta on the night of March 7, 2015. Ms Kumar was then taken to Westmead Hospital but died the following day. The inquest heard that at the time of the attack Ms Kumar was on the phone with her husband, Arun Kumar, who was in India. The coroner was previously told the husband had been having an affair, had just renewed his wife's life insurance, and changed the PIN on her bank account only an hour before her stabbing. The court heard that police were still investigating whether Mr Kumar may have organised the hit on his wife. Mr Kumar has never been charged in relation to his wife's death, and the person who carried out the attack has never been identified. The mother-of-one was seen on multiple security camera's catching two trains and walking through Parramatta in the lead-up to the attack. CCTV footage released by the court shows an unidentifiable figure dressed in black captured on a resident's security cameras near where the attack took place on the same night. Handing down his findings on Tuesday, Deputy State Coroner David O'Neil said that police considered the most likely explanation for Ms Kumar's death was a "targeted killing". Mr O'Neil referred the case to the NSW Police unresolved homicide squad to continue their investigation.

Bombshell new video reveals shadowy figure in a laneway moments before mum was fatally stabbed in the neck - as shocking details emerge about her failing marriage

New CCTV has revealed a shadowy figure dressed all in black moments before a mother unleashed blood-curdling screams as she was fatally stabbed in the neck. The footage was played on Monday at the inquest into the murder of Indian national Prabha Kumar, 41, who was killed in a Parramatta park in Sydney 's west in 2015. The inquest was told Ms Kumar's husband, Arun Kumar, had been having an affair, had just renewed his wife's life insurance, and changed the PIN on her bank account an hour before her stabbing. Two days after the murder, as Mr Kumar flew to Australia after deleting messages between himself and his lover in India, she texted him, saying: 'Idiot, you've got to be strong. 'Do you need me to come?' At the time of the deadly attack, Ms Kumar was on a long phone call to her husband in India. He has since given three different versions to police of what he heard during the call. The inquest was told detectives are still investigating whether Mr Kumar could have organised the hit on his wife. Ms Kumar's only child, daughter Megahana, 21, watched the two-day inquest by audio video link from India on Monday as it was shown video of her mother's final moments. Counsel Assisting the inquest Jillian Caldwell said Ms Kumar was clearly 'relaxed' while on the phone to Arun until she was attacked without warning. As she commuted home by train from her IT job at an office in Rhodes to Parramatta via Strathfield, she looked 'unconcerned' as she crossed the street. However, the CCTV footage cuts out just as the 41-year-old was walking past Evolve Housing on Argyle Street at 9.17pm on March 7, 2015. 'This is the last image of Prabha,' Ms Caldwell said. '(She) is talking on her phone to Arun. There is no-one behind her. She's not concerned about her whereabouts.' The footage was captured 130m from where she was stabbed, which was only 300m from her Westmead home. Mr Kumar's account of what happened next varies in differing statements he gave police. The inquest heard that prior to her death, Prabha's husband Arun (pictured at his wife's funeral in Bangalore) had been having an affair, had renewed her life insurance and changed the PIN on her bank account an hour before the fatal stabbing Initially, he said he could not hear another person, but later said he could clearly hear the voice of his wife's attacker. After arriving in Australia, Mr Kumar told police on March 9, 2015, that his wife had told him in the moments before the attack that 'a guy completely covered in black … suddenly passed me'. He said she had cried out, 'Please do not do anything to me … I will give, I will give', before she screamed loudly when she was stabbed. In that interview, Mr Kumar said he didn't hear anything else. But in November that year, he said that after pleading with her attacker not to hurt her, she then cried out after being attacked, 'You have stabbed me, no-one is around'. In February 2016, he told detectives he could hear someone in the background making demands of her. One of Ms Kumar's flatmates, Sarada, also gave a different account of what her husband told her had happened. On the evening of the attack, Sarada, who had never previously spoken with Mr Kumar, had eight missed calls from him. He told her: 'Sarada Sarada, I'm Prabha's husband. It looks like Prabha is in danger, can you go to the park?' When Sarada ran straight to the park and saw police and an ambulance, she called Mr Kumar back and asked how he knew his wife was in danger. She said Mr Kumar told her his wife 'saw a guy in black and told him, 'Don't do anything to me. I'll give you anything I have' and had then said, 'He stabbed me'. A passer-by found Ms Kumar facedown and bleeding profusely on the footpath. One man, then a student, recalled hearing two screams and went to investigate. He heard 'screaming, loud, intense, it sounded like someone being attacked' and then 'heard a second scream, louder, more of a crying scream,' Ms Caldwell said. Police and an ambulance initially couldn't find Ms Kumar, but when she was located, her heart was beating and she had a pulse. Paramedics rushed her to Westmead Hospital, applying ventilation and adrenaline en route. By 11pm, three cardiac specialists were operating on her wounds to stem the blood flow. But by 12.15am, Ms Kumar started to deteriorate and her blood pressure dropped. She died half an hour later. NSW Police told the inquest Mr Kumar remains one of several persons of interest. While the investigation into the murder remains live, there has been a recommendation it be referred to the Homicide Cold Case Unit. The inquest is expected to conclude on Tuesday.

Trees axed without approval? NGT serves notice to agencies in Haryana

Gurgaon: Months after the sarpanch of Arua in Faridabad's Ballabhgarh tehsil allegedly cut down 150-200 trees "without obtaining requisite permissions" from the competent authorities or approval from the forest department, multiple notices were issued by National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While the tribunal has listed the matter for further consideration on Oct 16, the replies have been sought from the authorities as well as the sarpanch, Mukesh, a week before that. The petitioner — local resident Arun Kumar — had said that despite complaints filed with both the forest department and the Chhainsa police station on March 27, and an ensuing inspection by forest officials, "no action was reportedly taken to address the illegal activity". Petitioner Arun Kumar, appearing in person via videoconference, submitted the forest department's inspection report, which confirmed illegal tree felling in the area. Photographs substantiating the claims were also placed on record. In the backdrop of this, the principal bench of NGT, led by chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Dr A Senthil Vel, directed that notices be issued to the member secretary of Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Faridabad district Magistrate, divisional forest officer of Faridabad and the sarpanch, asking them to file their replies by way of affidavit at least a week before the next hearing. Taking a serious view of the matter, the tribunal noted the application raises substantial questions regarding compliance with environmental norms. "Applicant appearing virtually submits that in the report of the forest department it has come to light illegal felling of trees took place but in spite of that no action has been taken by the authorities. In support of the plea, the applicant has placed on record certain photographs along with the letter petition. OA raises substantial questions relating to compliance with environmental norms," the order said. The applicant has been instructed to serve the notices to the respondents and submit proof of service prior to the upcoming hearing.
