Mohamad: Asean to press Trump on Palestine at summit
KUALA LUMPUR: The 47th Asean Summit and its related meetings, which will be attended by United States President Donald Trump as a dialogue partner, present an opportunity for the bloc to raise the issue of genocide in Palestine directly with him. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Trump's participation in the Asean-US Summit would enable the grouping to engage face-to-face and deliver its collective position. "I believe we can convey Asean's unified stance and reaffirm that the bloc, with one voice, condemns the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people. "We have already succeeded in securing a joint Asean statement expressing deep regret over the atrocities inflicted on Palestinians. "Through bilateral channels, we are confident that the US, and Trump in particular, would also wish to see Israel's cruelty come to an end. "We will push for this to be strongly emphasised in the Asean chair's statement by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the opening of the 47th Summit, stressing that the US, as a major power, must assume its responsibility to help resolve the crisis in Gaza urgently," he said in his winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan. He was responding to Hassan Karim (PH–Pasir Gudang), who questioned whether it was appropriate for Malaysia, as Asean chair, to invite Trump to Kuala Lumpur when "his hands are stained with the blood of innocent Gazans in the genocide." Mohamad said that the invitation was extended as part of Malaysia's role as host nation for the Asean-US Summit, and should not be conflated with Malaysia's stance on Palestine. "We invited him, and he has confirmed his attendance. I believe it is beneficial for us to meet face-to-face, as this allows all Asean members to voice their positions, just as we did when the US Secretary of State attended the recent Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting. "So, these issues should not be mixed," he said. On a suggestion from Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN–Alor Star) for Malaysia, as Asean chair, to propose the formation of an Asean Humanitarian Coalition for Palestine, Mohamad welcomed the idea. "That is a good suggestion. Whether or not it can be translated into action is another matter. What is important is that, for the first time, Asean has succeeded in issuing a joint statement. "Previously, it was difficult as member states held differing views, but this year we managed to unite Asean's voice in condemning the atrocities in Palestine.

Malaysia to raise Palestinian plight with Trump at Asean Summit, says Tok Mat
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will convey the cries of Palestinians directly to US President Donald Trump at the Asean Summit in October, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He stressed that while the invitation extended to Trump was part of Malaysia's duty as Asean chair, the summit would provide a crucial platform to deliver a unified Asean position on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. 'The invitation to President Trump is an obligation as the host of the Asean-US Summit. 'He has accepted, and I believe we should meet face to face so all Asean member states, all countries can make their positions clear,' Mohamad told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 19). Hasan Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) had asked if Malaysia would 'roll out the red carpet for a US President whose hands are stained with the blood of innocent Gazans in this genocidal war.' Mohamad added that Malaysia is considering using the opening chairman's statement to highlight the bloc's concern and to press Washington to act responsibly in helping to resolve the situation in Gaza. 'We want to emphasise through the Asean Chairman's Statement during the summit's opening that the United States, as a major power, must shoulder its responsibility so that the situation in Gaza can be resolved,' he said. Mohamad pointed to Asean's recent joint statement condemning the atrocities against Palestinians as an example of regional unity. 'We should not mix matters up – this is a multilateral engagement. 'We will continue to carry our bilateral relations separately, but in Asean, we have already achieved consensus with a joint statement expressing deep regret over the cruelty inflicted on the people of Palestine. 'Besides, we are confident that the United States, especially Trump, also wants to see this Israeli brutality brought to an end,' he said.

Anwar invites Trump to attend regional summits in October
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended an official invitation to United States President Donald Trump to attend the Asean-US Summit and the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October. This invitation was delivered via US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a courtesy call on Anwar today, July 10, 2025. Anwar expressed Malaysia's confidence that continued close cooperation with the US will not only strengthen bilateral ties but also contribute to stability, prosperity, and peace in the Indo-Pacific region. The meeting, which lasted approximately 40 minutes at the Parliament Building, marked Rubio's first trip to Asia since assuming office earlier this year. The discussions also covered broader cooperation in areas such as digital investment, artificial intelligence (AI), defence, and education. Furthermore, the leaders exchanged views on pressing regional issues, including the situations in Palestine, Ukraine, and Myanmar. Secretary Rubio is currently in Kuala Lumpur to attend a series of high-level meetings as part of Malaysia's Asean chairmanship for 2025, specifically the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, being held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from July 8 to 11.
