Selangor denied opening win after late Buriram equaliser

PETALING JAYA: Selangor were denied a winning start to their Asean Club Championships campaign after they were held to a 1-1 draw by defending champions Buriram United on Wednesday (Aug 20). In the Group A match at the Chang Stadium in Buriram, Selangor were without the injured Mukhairi Ajmal and Wilian Lira but they still went ahead in the 36th minute when Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes slotted home after a pass from Nooa Laine. Buriram, under coach Osmar Loss, pushed hard for the equaliser but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Kallamullah Al Hafiz, who pulled off several key saves. Selangor looked set to take all three points, only for Austrian defender Peter Zulj to head in the equaliser from a corner in stoppage time to make it 1-1.

JDT and Selangor carry Malaysia's challenge in Asean Club C'ships

PETALING JAYA: Super League clubs Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Selangor will fly the Jalur Gemilang as the second edition of the Asean Club Championships kicks off this week. Both clubs have been handed blockbuster opening fixtures. Treble winners JDT, who swept the Malaysia Super League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup last season, make their long-awaited debut in the regional competition with a Causeway clash against Singapore's Lion City Sailors at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Thursday (Aug 21). The Sailors, fresh off their own domestic double, will be looking for redemption after failing to progress beyond the group stage last year. On Wednesday (Aug 20), Selangor face an equally daunting task when they travel to Thailand to meet reigning champions Buriram United at the Chang Arena in Buriram. The Thai giants are defending not only their regional crown – secured in a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Vietnam's Cong An Ha Noi in May – but also a domestic treble. Selangor, runners-up to JDT in both league and cup competitions last season, will be making their first appearance on the South-East Asian stage. The competition brings together the region's best, split into two groups of six. Each club will play five matches in the group phase – either home or away – with the top sides advancing to the knockouts. With JDT aiming to translate domestic dominance into regional glory and Selangor out to prove themselves on the region's biggest stage, all eyes will be on Malaysian clubs as the Asean Club Championships return for a highly anticipated second season.

Samba time for Red Giants

New kid on the block: Red Giants' Chrigor Moraes showing off his new colours. — Selangor FC PETALING JAYA: Selangor have added Brazilian firepower to their frontline with the signing of striker Chrigor Moraes and there could be more from the Land of Samba. The 25-year-old Moraes is the second foreign signing for next month's Super League season, following the arrival of Thai international midfielder Picha Autra. Embarking on a new chapter in Malaysia, the confident and articulate forward is focused on settling in quickly with his new team. 'Honestly, I'm very excited to start this new chapter,' said Moraes, who had played for Buriram United in Thailand and featured in the AFC Champions League Elite and the Asean Club Championships. He also played for PT Prachuap last year and scored 10 goals and two assists in just 13 games and emerged as one of the top scorers of the league. 'Playing abroad always comes with big challenges, but I arrived with an open heart and a strong will to adapt as quickly as possible,' said Moraes. 'From my time in Thailand, I've learned that this mindset helps me settle into the team culture faster. 'I did take the time to get to know the club by watching their matches, following the team on social media, and trying to understand their style of play. 'I know I still have a lot to learn, especially the language, but I'm fully committed. I'll work hard to score goals and help the team achieve their targets this season.' Born in Cachoeira do Sul, Brazil, Moraes began his professional journey with Brasil de Pelotas, making his Serie B debut in 2018 before moving to Red Bull Brasil. His breakout year came in 2023 with Portuguesa, where he lit up the Copa Paulista by netting seven goals in 12 appearances, a performance that ultimately earned him a move abroad. The Red Giants are also reportedly close to landing former Kedah and Chonburi forward Willian Lira, with sources confident that it's a done deal. Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi believes the club have made a smart signing in Moraes, praising the striker's maturity and hunger for growth. 'Chrigor has valuable experience in South-East Asia and brings great energy,' said Kinoshi. 'He will play an important role in our attacking setup and is expected to contribute both goals and assists.'
