Selangor denied opening win after late Buriram equaliser
In the Group A match at the Chang Stadium in Buriram, Selangor were without the injured Mukhairi Ajmal and Wilian Lira but they still went ahead in the 36th minute when Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes slotted home after a pass from Nooa Laine.
Buriram, under coach Osmar Loss, pushed hard for the equaliser but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Kallamullah Al Hafiz, who pulled off several key saves.
Selangor looked set to take all three points, only for Austrian defender Peter Zulj to head in the equaliser from a corner in stoppage time to make it 1-1.

Late heartbreak for Selangor coach Kinoshi
SELANGOR coach Katsuhito Kinoshi said his side must grow stronger and sharper after conceding a crushing stoppage-time equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Buriram United in the Asean Club Championship (ACC) Group A opener yesterday. The Red Giants were seconds away from a statement victory at Buriram Stadium after Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes fired them ahead in the 38th minute. Still, Austrian midfielder Peter Zulj rose higher to head home in stoppage time (90+6), denying Selangor all three points. "Yeah, first half, I'm so satisfied with the first half," said Japanese Kinoshi. "But now I realise I have to have training for the next match for 130 minutes, maybe 150 minutes, something like that. We need to implement stronger and tougher training for our upcoming matches." Kinoshi said that despite the gut-wrenching finale, his players should not be disheartened. "Until the 95th minute, we were leading. So this is something we must have confidence in and be proud of," he said. "But Buriram let me know we are not good enough yet to win against a team like them. We must improve." Selangor had looked organised and dangerous on the break in the first half, with Zach Clough's free kick going close before Chrigor smashed home Noor Al Rawabdeh's clever through ball. Buriram dominated possession throughout but were frustrated by Selangor goalkeeper Kalamullah Al Hafiz, who pulled off a string of saves to deny Guilherme Bissoli and Suphanat Mueanta. Robert Zulj also struck the post before his brother, Peter, finally made the breakthrough with virtually the last play of the match.

Champions Buriram Utd of Thailand salvage a draw with Malaysia's Selangor as Asean Club Championships kick off in style
SINGAPORE: Defending champions Buriram United FC rescued a point from their Asean Club Championship Shopee Cup 2025/26 Group A opener on Wednesday (Aug 20) as a late goal from Peter Zulj secured a 1-1 draw with Malaysia's Selangor FC at Buriram Stadium. The tournament returned for its second season with Tampines Rovers FC from Singapore handing DH Cebu FC a 3-1 defeat in Manila, while Thai League 1 outfit BG Pathum United FC came from a goal down to defeat last year's beaten finalists Cong An Hanoi (Vietnam) 2-1 in Bangkok. Buriram United needed a late header from Austrian midfielder Zulj six minutes into stoppage time to earn a draw against a valiant Selangor side, who had taken the lead through Brazilian striker Chrigor in the 38th minute. 'I think in the first half we had some problems with our game,' said Zulj, who was named the Shopee Star of the Match. 'We were 1-0 behind, unluckily, because we had some chances in the first half, and I think in the second half we put it all in. We showed our real quality, our playing style, and how we play football, and in the end it's a draw. But I also think we deserved to win this game.' BG Pathum United vs Cong An Hanoi FC. Chrigor had put Selangor in front with a fine first-time finish, and Katushito Kinoshi's side looked set to secure a famous win despite intense Buriram United pressure throughout the second half. Zulj had different ideas, however, heading home a corner from his brother Robert deep into injury time to claim a point for the champions. Tampines Rovers lead the early Group A standings following their 3-1 win over Cebu as goals from Hide Higashikawa and Dylan Fox put the Singapore Premier League side in command at Rizal Memorial Stadium. Shuya Yamashita's long ball from deep released Taufik Suparno in the second minute, and, while he saw his shot saved by Rami Jeridi, Higashikawa slid in to slam the rebound into the roof of the net. Fox added the second in the 19th minute, the Australian rising highest to meet Joel Chew's corner with a powerful header from eight yards out that gave Jeridi little chance. Esrom Paulos' perfectly flighted corner found Abou Sy at the far side of the six-yard box two minutes later, and the Senegalese forward outleapt everyone to head in for the hosts. But substitute Trent Buhagiar put the outcome beyond doubt seven minutes into added time with a clinical finish at the end of a rapid break. BG Pathum United also secured three points thanks to Chanathip Songkrasin, who came off the bench to score twice for 10-man BG Pathum United and stun Vietnamese National Cup winners Cong An Hanoi FC in their opener at BG Stadium. Fabio claims world record for most games
Published on: Thursday, August 21, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 21, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Fabio began his football career in 1997. – Getty Images RIO DE JANEIRO: Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio on Tuesday claimed the record for most competitive appearances in men's football when the Brazilian played for a 1,391st time. The 44-year-old on Saturday equalled the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton and Fabio has now gone one better following a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Advertisement Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither Fifa nor regional body Conmebol has declared it a record. 'Sometimes we don't realise the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years,' Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg. The home fans chanted, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil,' and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. 'No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his,' said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. 'He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.' Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired. The Englishman considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
