The 44-year-old on Saturday equalled the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton and Fabio has now gone one better following a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.
Advertisement Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither Fifa nor regional body Conmebol has declared it a record. 'Sometimes we don't realise the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years,' Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg. The home fans chanted, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil,' and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. 'No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his,' said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. 'He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.' Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired. The Englishman considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No silver bullet, says Potter, as West Ham seek bounce back against Chelsea
LONDON: One game into the new Premier League season West Ham United manager Graham Potter already finds himself in the "at risk" category, according to bookmakers who have made him favourite to become the first to be sacked. Losing 3-0 at promoted Sunderland saw to that and Potter knows a quick response will be required at home to Club World Cup champions Chelsea at the London Stadium on Friday. By the eye-watering Premier League standards West Ham have invested a relatively modest 70 million pounds (US$93.88 million) on squad strengthening during the summer window, a net spend of just 16.5 million and improving a sluggish midfield looks a priority if West Ham are to improve on last year's 14th place. But speaking to reporters ahead of a clash with the club that sacked him in 2023 after less than a season in charge, Potter said there was no quick fix, especially with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). "Our job is to try to look for players that can improve us externally, and at the same time, look for players and help the players we have here," Potter, who replaced Julen Lopetegui in January, told reporters. "That's where my focus is on. "The squad has had investment over a number of years, and we have to get more out of the squad that we have. We'll try and find the best solution. When you've had a bad result, everybody thinks that the silver bullet is going to come from outside and save us all. History will suggest it doesn't work like that. "It's about being a club, about being a team, about being together, accepting the criticism that comes with a bad result." Asked about being under early pressure, Potter remarked that the press conference was busier than it might have been after becoming the first team to lose to Sunderland in the Premier League since Hull City in 2017. "The reality of it is a disappointing result, there is no getting away from that. It's a bad result for us," Potter said. "The score line creates negativity, which we have to accept. But at the same time, I believe a lot in the players." Potter said he had not had much time to reflect on where Chelsea are at under Enzo Maresca, but knows they will present a formidable challenge on Friday. "They are in a good moment having won the Club World Cup," Potter said. "They have a very talented manager, talented squad, on the back of a successful summer period. "They're constantly investing in the team with young players, so we expect a big challenge."

PERLIS: Sabahan runner Deaxter Pius wrote his name into the record books after setting a new time in the Boys' Under-15 400 metres at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Championships. The 15-year-old from Tambunan clocked 48.90 seconds at the Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium to win gold and break the long-standing meet record. Advertisement His achievement comes shortly after he set a new Sabah Schools Sports Council (MSSS) record earlier this month with a time of 49.99 seconds. Officials and observers described his performance as a strong indication of his potential to compete at higher levels in the future. No more late slips in Asean Club C'ship, Selangor vow
PETALING JAYA: Selangor are determined not to let victory slip away again in the Asean Club Championships Shopee Cup after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Thai giants Buriram United. The Red Giants had started on the right note at the Chang Stadium in Buriram on Wednesday, with Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes giving them the lead in the 36th minute. But defending champions Buriram fought back, and Austrian defender Peter Zulji snatched a late equaliser deep into stoppage time. Despite taking just one point from their opening match, Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi praised his team for having kept Buriram on the chase throughout the match. 'I was really satisfied with how we played in the first half but we have to train hard for our next matches.' said Kinoshi. 'We had good training sessions before playing Buriram, but they were very organised and had many good players. 'We did hold the lead until the 95th minute, so that was something that we should be proud of.' Kinoshi acknowledged the would have to raise the bar when they face Buriram again at home. 'We must be stronger, more team-oriented and disciplined in our coming matches, regardless of whether it's the domestic league or international competition,' he said. He also confirmed that Thai midfielder Picha Autra, left out for tactical reasons, remains an integral part of the squad. 'He is our player and I need him in the team. This is for sure,' said Kinoshi. Selangor's next match will see them visit Negri Sembilan in the Super League on Sunday, before they host Terengganu at home on Wednesday.
