AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – Moving the needle of progress in Augusta takes one building at a time.. one business at a time.. But many forward thinking people to lead the way. Ashley Harris is one of them. 'I started out as a high school Economics and U.S. Government teacher. Then, I transitioned into the Chamber world,' she explains. After three years with the Columbia County chamber, she came to Accelerate Augusta. She's still teaching but with a different kind of student. 'At Accelerate Augusta I'm the program manager, program director, and there I'm designing programs to help small business owners, entrepreneurs and everyone who falls in between to create workshops or courses to help them better their business.'She says the program is the brainchild of Augusta Technical College and the Downtown Development Authority. She explains, 'what we do is we're hosting classes, cohorts, bootcamps and academies based on the feedback that small business gives us. So, if they're in need of Quickbook training, if their in need of social media marketing training, we just had a class last night talking about generative A-I and ChatGPT and how that can affect, positively, small business owners.' For Ashley, this is more than a job. It's a mission toward a greater good. 'I love the CSRA and Augusta. I have done the majority of my professional work in Columbia County. But, I'm a native of Augusta. I love the area and I love the potential and the growth that's happening right before our eyes. Having a hand in it is also fulfilling.' While her goal is to help move the city in a positive direction she has advice for women trying to get on the right path in business. 'They have to stand firm in what they believe. They have to be able to be confident enough to be in places that they know that they belong but not necessarily be welcomed.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Puppy revived after overdose in St. Louis; owner charged
ST. LOUIS – Hospital workers revived a puppy with Narcan on Monday after an apparent overdose in St. Louis. The puppy's owner now faces criminal charges. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office has charged Ashley Harris, 35, of Springfield, Missouri, with two misdemeanors – animal abuse and resisting/interfering with arrest – amid the investigation. Investigators say the puppy was believed to be 8-10 weeks old and showed various signs of an opioid overdose, including blue gums and dilated pupils. Sheriff pleads the Fifth repeatedly over questions about mysterious death According to court documents obtained by FOX 2, officers were on assignment at St. Louis' BJC Hospital on Monday when they observed hospital and EMS personnel treating an unresponsive puppy outside an emergency room. Hospital staff contacted police to report that a puppy had overdosed on a suspected narcotic. Staff also noted that the puppy's owner, identified as Harris in court documents, was unwilling to give the puppy to Stray Rescue. Investigators say Harris was at the emergency room to be seen for an undisclosed matter and was accompanied by her puppy, who was initially described as 'alert and playful.' Some time later, Harris stepped outside and hospital personnel observed the puppy to be 'limp and nonresponsive,' according to court documents. Close Thanks for signing up! Rock Island mayoral candidates share their views before Tuesday election
Voters will be headed to the polls Tuesday, when – among other city races – the position for Rock Island mayor is up for grabs. Both current Mayor Mike Thoms and military veteran Ashley Harris are vocal about their priorities if elected. Gavin Waidelich of Our Quad Cities News spoke with them for Your Local Election Headquarters. Incumbent Mayor Thoms is reaching the end of his second term and looks to serve a third. He says his experience managing the city gives him an advantage, and he can 'hit the ground running and be productive, day one.' His opponent, Ashley Harris, doesn't have that experience, but says his time serving the community counts just as much: 'I've been a community-minded person. I've volunteered a numerous amount of times, and I feel those interpersonal people qualities make me qualified to be mayor,' Harris said. Both candidates hope to make Rock Island a beacon to those looking for a new home. Thoms says, in addition to the developments being made at the Milan Bottoms and downtown, housing is is needed to attract more people to the city. 'There's several large projects I want to follow through with, along with homes,' he told Our Quad Cities News. 'You know we need some more affordable homes and need to concentrate on that.' Additionally, money has been set aside to renovate existing homes, Thoms said. But Harris says social services are the key to bringing people in. 'Social infrastructure' is important, eh told Our Quad Cities News. He says the city should be 'looking at every sector that makes a city attractive, because we want Rock Island to be a city of choice.' Both say they want to address the quality of roads in the city. The Consolidated Municipal Election will be held Tuesday, April 1. For more information, visit here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
