The Backbone Pro controller makes mobile gaming worth the hassle
The mobile controller company Backbone unveiled its Backbone Pro controller this week, which brings iOS and Android gaming experiences to the next level. A successor to the Backbone One controller, the Pro features full-size joysticks, re-mappable buttons, and Bluetooth compatibility, making for a more premium gaming setup. Unlike its predecessor, the Backbone Pro doesn't need to be attached to a phone to work, meaning that you could use it as a wireless controller. That functionality gets extra useful when using cloud gaming services like Xbox Game Pass. You can play a game with the Backbone Pro controller on your TV, then plug your phone into the controller and instantly pick up where you left off on mobile. 'Our thought is, gaming should be a lot more straightforward,' founder Maneet Khaira told TechCrunch. 'It needs to be really simple and work more like AirPods when you connect to screens.' Backbone is betting big on the growth of mobile gaming, which has only been accelerated by expanding cloud gaming options, but so far, Backbone seems to be cementing itself as the top hardware maker for mobile gamers. It also helps that Backbone is teeming with celebrity investors like Ashton Kutcher, The Weeknd, MrBeast, Post Malone, and Amy Schumer, as well as gaming insiders like Discord founder Jason Citron. But as someone who doesn't use Xbox Game Pass or similar cloud subscriptions, I never quite understood the hype around using a smartphone as a gaming device. I already have a Nintendo Switch, a device specifically made for gaming, as opposed to my iPhone, which is designed for a bazillion other things. So to test the Backbone Pro, I downloaded some games on my phone that I already play on the Switch, solely for the purpose of comparing the gameplay experience. The verdict? I have logged about 13 hours of gameplay on the iOS version of Stardew Valley over the last three days. I'm not fully sold on mobile gaming — answering texts while playing a game is kind of annoying — but I have to say, I'd much rather sit on the couch with the Backbone Pro than the Nintendo Switch, which prioritizes screen size over comfort. Image Credits:TechCrunch The Backbone Pro shines in its ergonomics. Sometimes, when you pick up a new iPhone, it feels familiar, yet slightly off, and it takes some time to get used to the feel of the new device before the differences stop being noticeable. This was the experience I had playing the Nintendo Switch 2, as opposed to the original console. Available through May 9 or while tables last. Berkeley, CA | BOOK NOW But the Backbone Pro's design feels so naturally intuitive that I didn't even experience those few minutes of discomfort. Seconds after plugging my phone into the controller's USB-C port for the first time, I could play Hades — a game rife with chaotic button mashing — just as easily as I do on the Switch. I find the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller uncomfortable for games like Hades, so that's saying something. 'Meta, when they were designing the Quest, they would do multiple iterations of a headset [prototype] in a week, because they could print them and then rapidly test them, get feedback, and iterate,' Khaira said. He took inspiration from that technique when developing the Backbone Pro, investing heavily in the same kind of technology. Backbone 3D-printed over 9,000 different parts before landing on the model that ultimately shipped, making microscopic tweaks to every facet of the controller before arriving at something that makes Joy-Cons feel like Fisher-Price toys. This level of precision and versatility comes at a cost. The Backbone Pro retails for $169.99, which is a bit steep considering that you could buy a refurbished Nintendo Switch Lite for the same price. But for serious players who need that cross-device functionality, the Backbone Pro could be worth it. If you're not moving back and forth between Xbox Game Pass on your TV and your phone, you could probably be fine with the original Backbone One, which is $99.99.

EXCLUSIVE 80s action film and sitcom star is unrecognizable on very rare sighting in LA... can you guess who?
One of the most unforgettable faces from '80s action cinema— and later a beloved sitcom curmudgeon—was spotted looking worlds away from his tough-guy roles during a rare outing in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Now 81, the actor rose to fame as the chilling villain Clarence Boddicker in 1987's RoboCop, and followed it up with a memorable turn as CIA operative Robert Griggs in Rambo III. But for a whole generation, he'll always be Red Forman—the gruff, no-nonsense dad from That '70s Show, where he sparred lovingly with Ashton Kutcher 's dim-witted Kelso and delivered classic one-liners with perfect timing. He even reunited with Kutcher years later on The Ranch, slipping right back into the role of a grumpy father figure with ease. Dressed casually in a bright blue polo and slacks, the Wisconsin native looked relaxed and content—nothing like his stern on-screen personas. Can you guess the star? But for a whole generation, he'll always be Red Forman—the gruff, no-nonsense dad from That '70s Show, where he sparred lovingly with Ashton Kutcher 's dim-witted Kelso and delivered classic one-liners with perfect timing If you said Kurtwood Smith, you're absolutely right! Back in 2023, Kurtwood Smith opened up about his audition for That '70s Show — and the instant chemistry he shared with his future TV wife, Debra Jo Rupp. 'She was already cast, and they were casting my role. I was the last person cast,' he told Smashing Interviews. 'So when I went in to read the final reading, I don't know what his position was at the time, but he had a really big office (laughs). So I read with Debra Jo there. I guess we must've hit it off, you know. 'I thought she was very funny, and she was. We had a great time.' Smith, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley, graduated from Canoga Park High School in 1961. He earned a B.A. from San José State and an M.F.A. from Stanford. He later taught theater arts at Cañada College before diving into acting full-time. The film not only solidified Kurtwood Smith's iconic role as the ruthless villain Clarence Boddicker, but also pushed the boundaries of special effects and became a defining entry in the sci-fi action genre of the 80s But for a whole generation, he'll always be Red Forman—the gruff, no-nonsense dad from That '70s Show, where he sparred lovingly with Ashton Kutcher 's dim-witted Kelso and delivered classic one-liners with perfect timing Beyond That '70s Show, Smith's career spans decades — from playing a KKK leader in A Time to Kill to memorable roles in Dead Poets Society, Star Trek, and even voice work in Green Lantern: First Flight and Fallout Tactics Smith, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley, graduated from Canoga Park High School in 1961 and earned a B.A. from San José State and an M.F.A. from Stanford Kurtwood is actually his real first name — a unique creation by his mother, who, inspired by a country singer named Kurt (or Curt) in the 1940s, thought 'Kurt Smith' sounded too plain and tacked on 'wood' to make it one of a kind Beyond That '70s Show, Smith's career spans decades — from playing a KKK leader in A Time to Kill to memorable roles in Dead Poets Society, Star Trek, and even voice work in Green Lantern: First Flight and Fallout Tactics. He also voiced Carpenter K. Smith in AMC+'s Ultra City Smiths. And Kurtwood is actually his real first name. According to a past interview on The Caroline Rhea Show, Smith's mother was a fan of a country singer named Kurt (or Curt) back in the 1940s. She felt that 'Kurt Smith' sounded too short, so she added 'wood' to the end — making him likely the only Kurtwood out there.

How the likes of Kourtney Kardashian, Anne Hathaway, Kelly Brook and Ashton Kutcher ditched their ultra-strict fruitarian, keto, Atkins and vegan diets - as Gwyneth Paltrow turns her back on Paleo regime
Celebrities will often try anything to look good and stay in shape. And as well as a whole host of beauty treatments and tweakments, many turn to their diet in the search of body perfection. Veganism, keto diets, the Atkins diet as well as fasting and fruitarian regimes are some that mega stars have sworn by to help them lose weight and keep it off. But this week one big name in the wellness industry - Gwyneth Paltrow - revealed she had finally ditched her ultra-strict Paleo diet after years of being 'obsessed with eating healthily'. The actress turned wellness guru, 52, who founded her wellness company GOOP in 2008, admitted she's 'sick' of the caveman diet that restricts bread, cheese and pasta. And she isn't the only star who has changed their minds on their diet plans - with a host of stars ditching their strict vegan diets over the years including Lizzo, Anne Hathaway and Jenna Ortega. Other stars like Kourtney Kardashian have ditched their keto diet, while Kelly Brook turned her back on her Atkins journey and Ashton Kutcher ended up hospitalised after following a fruitarian diet for a film role. Fruitarian diet - Ashton Kutcher In 2013 Ashton was hospitalized after trying a fruitarian diet in preparation for his role as Steve Jobs in the biopic Jobs. The actor said at the time that he was rushed to hospital before shooting his new movie Jobs about the late entrepreneur after embarking on a fruit-only diet for the biopic, favoured by the Apple co-founder who died of pancreatic cancer in 2011. He told USA Today newspaper at the premiere of the movie at the Sundance Film Festival: 'First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to like severe issues. 'I went to the hospital like two days before we started shooting the movie. I was doubled over in pain. 'My pancreas levels were like completely out of whack. It was really terrifying... considering everything.' He studied hundreds of hours of footage of Steve for the role and claimed he discovered they had a lot in common. A fruitarian diet is a vegan diet primarily focused on consuming raw fruits, with some variations including nuts, seeds, and some vegetables. It's considered a restrictive eating pattern and may pose nutritional risks if not carefully planned. Veganism - Anne Hathaway Anne Hathaway spoke in 2019 about inadvertently upending her vegan diet. The star chatted about her decision to give up alcohol and give in to meat eating as she graced a Tatler cover. The star, now 42, went vegan in 2012 to play Catwoman in Dark Night Rises and kept it up for her Oscar winning role as Fantine in Les Misérables. It wasn't until she was at dinner with Matt Damon at a swanky restaurant in Iceland while filming Interstellar in 2014 that she gave up her diet and never felt better. The brunette beauty said that she was out with a group of people including her husband at a Michelin starred eatery when Damon told the chef he would eat whatever was prepared. Anne said she awkwardly gave in to the temptation of non-vegan food. 'So then I was the only chick and I'm the vegan and everyone's just going with the flow,' she revealed. Adding: 'So I asked [she puts on a small embarrassed voice]: 'Is your fish local?' And they said: 'Do you see that fjord?' So I had a piece of salmon and my brain felt like a computer rebooting.' The star left her vegan lifestyle behind her and got much stronger with the changed diet - a help when she donned heavy space suits while shooting Interstellar. 'I just didn't feel good or healthy,' she previously told to Harper's Bazaar. Anne isn't the only celebrity to abandon a strict plant-based lifestyle and joined celebs like Zooey Deschanel, Carrie Underwood and Natalie Portman who've all ditched the lifestyle. Keto diet - Kourtney Kardashian In March 2020 Kourtney finally ditched her keto diet. According to Medical News Today, the keto diet refers to a ketogenic diet, which is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carb diet. The main goal of the food plan is to get more calories from protein and fat than from carbs. It works by depleting your body of its store of sugar, so it will start to break down protein and fat for energy, causing ketosis. Ketosis is a metabolic process that involves fat providing most of the fuel for the body, rather than energy coming from foods eaten. Kourtney started it for the second time in June 2019 but has since given it up for good. She admitted during her interview with Health magazine that she has quit the keto diet but said her household remains gluten and dairy-free. Kourtney said: 'I noticed that my body changed for the better when I quit the Keto.' She now focuses on well-balanced meals and engaging in regular exercise to achieve a healthy, well-toned body. Atkins diet - Kelly Brook Model Kelly ditched the Atkins diet in 2016. When asked in an interview if she was still following the regime after previously speaking about it she said: 'Well, I've got two sugars in my tea and I'm eating a croissant, so no. 'As soon as you come off it, you go back up. Not hugely. I'm always between an 8 and a 12. 'But it was a really good challenge for me – I'd never been on any diet in my life, so the fact that I did it was amazing!' The Atkins diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-protein, and high-fat eating plan designed for weight loss. It involves restricting carbohydrate intake, particularly refined carbohydrates, while allowing unrestricted consumption of protein and fat. The diet is divided into four phases, each with increasing net carbohydrate allowances as the individual progresses towards their weight loss goals. Kelly said when she moved back to the UK from LA she changed her lifestyle and felt better for it. She explained: 'It was easy to do when I was in Los Angeles because you're so health-conscious out there, but as soon I left, my focus changed. 'It wasn't so much on my diet and exercise regime – it was more on enjoying my life a little bit more. My boyfriend (now husband Jeremy Parisi) is Italian and lives in France, so I cook a lot of pasta and we have croissants most mornings. 'I'm more accepting of myself. You're skinnier and toned when you're younger. When you're older, you have a few too many glasses of wine and too much chocolate cake.' She was announced British ambassador for the Atkins plan in January 2015. She lost over 8lbs in weight through lowering her carbohydrate and sugar intake and upping her exercise regime. Veganism - Lizzo Lizzo revealed last October in a video that she has ditched veganism in favor of an omnivorous protein-rich diet. The 36-year-old rapper and singer cleared up her new approach to eating for fans in a clip in which she displayed everything she eats in a given day now that she has added back animal proteins into her diet. She gave the glimpse into a day in her life after flaunting her impressive weight loss and slimmed-down figure. Lizzo may have also wanted to clear up what she has been eating after she previously blasted rumors that she has been taking Ozempic-like weight-loss drugs to help achieve her more svelte look. She opened her video in a brown dress that accentuated her curves as she held a lettuce wrap that a contained some meat and tomatoes out toward the camera. She has had to slam rumors that she has been taking an Ozempic-like drug to help her lose weight. Instead, she attributed the weight loss to a healthier diet and exercise, along with more mindful eating (right, in 2022) She added her own narration in which she explained her decision to give up her vegan diet in favor of an omnivorous diet. 'My reintroduction to protein came from Japan,' she shared, explaining that a trip to the Asian nation left her feeling fantastic after dining on fresh sushi and 'fluffy' eggs. 'I was amazed at how good my body felt the next day,' she admitted. Since adding back animal proteins into her diet, Lizzo thought it was helping her to have 'more energy, lose weight' and to deal with 'mental fog' that she suffered from. Despite leaving veganism behind, she said she still thought it was the healthiest option, and she said she aspired to one day be a 'raw, alkaline vegan.' However, there's little scientific support for the purported health benefits of an alkaline diet — though it's focus on avoiding processed foods can be beneficial — and many vegetables can be better digested after being cooked. Lizzo concluded the video by declaring that she wouldn't judge anyone else for their diet, whether they were raw vegans or carnivores. Some of her fans in the comments didn't appreciate her rejection of veganism, even if it was only a personal choice and not a total rejection of the philosophy. One angry person took issue with calling herself a person 'who added protein to her diet,' calling the phrase 'so incorrect honestly.' 'You already have protein in your vegan diet, honey. You just added dead animals to your diet, that's the correct word. Xoxo,' they wrote. 'Veganism is not a diet,' wrote another person, apparently meaning that it was more than just a weight-loss strategy. Others wondered how she could get past the 'cruelty' they felt was inherent in the production of animal-based foods. 'I was vegan for a really long time,' she explained. 'But I stopped being vegan when I went to Romania to shoot Wednesday actually because the food is very different there' Jenna has previously told how she ditched being vegan when she was filming her hit Netflix show Wednesday. 'I was vegan for a really long time,' she explained. 'But I stopped being vegan when I went to Romania to shoot Wednesday actually because the food is very different there. 'And I don't think that I was meeting my nutrient requirements so I started eating fish again. 'So I'm currently pescatarian.' A vegan diet is based on plants (such as vegetables, grains, nuts and fruits) and foods made from plants.
