Kota Kinabalu: Twenty-three junior squash players from Kota Kinabalu-based Prestige Squash Club were given maximum exposure in the 8th Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship 2025 held at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching from July 15 to 20. The regional tournament classified as a gold event under the Asian Junior Super Series (AJSS) was organised in collaboration with the Asian Squash Federation (ASF). It attracted top junior players from 16 countries including Malaysia, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the United States as well as debut appearances by players from Canada, New Zealand, Russia and Sri Lanka. Club secretary Mohd Nizam Ali Hasan expressed his pride in the players' performance under the guidance of head coach Bryan Spencer Faurillo, along with coaches Julian Jeremiah Faurillo and Mohd Adam John Faurillo. 'The 8th Borneo Junior Open was more than just a competition, it was a platform for growth, exposure and self-discovery. Our young players showed grit and sportsmanship competing in various categories from Under-11 to Under-19 against some of the best juniors from across Asia and beyond. 'We are extremely proud of their efforts and this experience will undoubtedly shape them into stronger athletes moving forward,' he said. Euodia Lai, who was ranked top six in the girls Under-19 category, and Jedidiah Kwan, who ranked eighth in the boys Under-17 category, were the best achievers in the team, while several others managed to make it to the top half of their respective categories. SQUASH India qualfies for three finals at Asian Doubles Championships India continued its strong run at the Asian Doubles Squash Championships, hosted by the Asian Squash Federation in Kuching, Malaysia, with pairs reaching the finals in all three categories – Men's, Women's, and Mixed Doubles. India has now confirmed four medals at the event. Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh defeated Malaysia's Ainaa Armani and Syafiq Kamal, winning 11-8, 10-11, 11-5 in a 46-minute battle. They will now face the Malaysian top pair, Rachel Arnold and Ameesshraj Chandran, who earlier defeated India's Velavan Senthilkumar and Joshana Chinappa 8-11, 11-7, 11-9 (37 mins) in another closely contested match. Abhay and Velavan continued their strong run, defeating Hong Kong China's Chi Him Wong and Ming Tang 11-5, 11-9 in a physically demanding 42-minute semifinal to set up a final clash with Pakistan. Kuwaiti Adel Al-Gharib elected VP of Asian Squash Federation
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 16 : Adel Al-Gharib, Kuwait Squash Federation's board member, was elected Vice President of the Asian Squash Federation for the 2025-2029 term. This came on the sidelines of the 22nd Asian Junior Championship in Hong Kong, with representatives from 27 member countries in attendance. In a press statement on Sunday, Al-Gharib expressed that his new role came with great responsibility, emphasizing his commitment to advancing the sport in Asia globally. He also stated that he would focus on organizing Asian tournaments during his term. Notably, Al-Gharib has an extensive history in squash, having held multiple sports leadership positions and overseen various international tournaments in Kuwait. As a player, he represented Salmiya Club and the Kuwait national team in numerous Gulf, Arab, and international championships. He was the Kuwait and Gulf champion from 1987 to 1997. (KUNA)
