Soccer-PSG sign French goalkeeper Chevalier from Lille

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Ligue 1 - Nantes v Lille - The Stade de la Beaujoire - Louis Fonteneau, Nantes, France - March 15, 2025 Lille's Lucas Chevalier during the warm up before the match REUTERS/Stephane Mahe/File Photo (Reuters) -Paris St Germain have signed French goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from fellow Ligue 1 club Lille on a contract until 2030, the European champions announced late on Saturday. Media reports said Chevalier has joined PSG for a fee of around 40 million euros ($47 million), with the 23-year-old in line to succeed Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has a year left in his contract with the Paris-based club, as the number one custodian in Luis Enrique's team. "I am a kid that is living his dream. Ever since I was small I wanted to play at the very highest level," Chevalier said in a statement. "I'm really delighted to be here. I will wear this shirt with passion and ambition." Calais-born Chevalier graduated from Lille's youth academy and played on loan for Valenciennes before becoming the first-choice keeper at his parent club during the 2022-23 season. He was named Ligue 1's goalkeeper of the year for the 2024-25 season by the UNFP trade union for professional footballers in France. "Lucas is one of the leading goalkeepers in France and Europe and a fantastic addition to our team - as we continue to build everything for the long-term based on the collective," said PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Ligue 1 and Champions League winners PSG face Tottenham Hotspur for the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. Away game to start season

Published on: Sunday, August 10, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 10, 2025 By: James Wong Text Size: Most of the players have been with the team for at least two years and so is the bond. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC's first game in the new Super League season scheduled on August 19 has now been postponed till August 29 due to the Sabah Masters Athletics Championship, which is being held at Likas Stadium this weekend. As a result, Sabah FC season opener will now be an away game against Kuala Lumpur FC on August 13. Advertisement A home game to kick- start the season is always the best tonic for any team to register their first win with the support of their fans. Anyway, playing away doesn't mean that you are going to lose, but it is always going to be a difficult game as the host will have the backing of their home crowd and the pressure will be high for the visiting team. However, I believe with a positive mindset and strong confidence, we should be able to perform well and get a good result. After all, Sabah FC are not a new team. Most of the players have been with the team for at least two years and more. The comradeship of the players is definitely there and so is the bonding. Advertisement The old guards Saddil Ramdani, Telmo Castanheira, Park Taesu and Ko Kwang-min are no longer in the picture. The new faces to replace them are striker Ajdin Mujagic from Bosnia Herzegovina , midfielder Dean Pelekanos from Australia and defender Dane Ingham from New Zealand as well as naturalised national player Fergus Tierney. It will be interesting to see how well these players have blended into the team. I guess the first game against Kuala Lumpur will give us the answer. Darren Lok now has a new partner upfront with Ajdin and Fergus, who is one of the players in the National Under-23 squad. He is young and hungry and have a bright future. I just hope the new look strike force will make an immediate impact on the team and get us the goals. Jafri Chew, who seldom started the games past few seasons, is an asset and may have more playing time to contribute this season. With the absence of Telmo, I am certain Stuart Wilkin will have to take the lead in the engine room and hopefully his partnership with the new imports will be able to perform well. Centreback Gabriel Peres who missed the last few matches towards the end of last season due to injuries is now back with the team. I am sure the coaches are relieved to see his presence as he not only helped the team in defence but also managed to score goals. Let's hope the team can bring home the three points. Good luck Sabah FC! * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Charlayne finishes third at Selangor meet

Published on: Saturday, August 09, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 09, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Charlayne (right) receives her prize from chairperson Tan Ai-Leen. Kota Kinabalu: Charlayne Chong finished third in the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open which ended on Thursday. Her one-under 218 total also missed the play-off by mere one shot from eventual winner Indonesian Bianca Naomi Laksono and Filipina Samantha Dizon. Advertisement The 23-year-old Sabahan, who just won the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Champion a week ago, continued her fine form on day one. She stunned the field with a 68 in the opening round to take the lead. However, she faltered the following day with a disastrous 80, but managed to make amends on the final day with a 69. Despite the below-par performance on day two, she said she never gave up. Advertisement 'It was a bit of a bummer that my performance dipped on the second day after starting the tournament strong. 'I think I felt a bit of pressure and I just couldn't find my rhythm. Still, I never lost hope. My main goal for this event was to apply what I learned from my previous tournament and to stay in control of my emotions and thoughts, lower my expectations, and take the pressure off. 'I'm proud to say I managed to achieve that goal and as a bonus, I managed to make a comeback and recover on the final day. I may have missed out by just one stroke, but I'm genuinely happy that I stayed calm and composed right up to the last hole. 'Although I was hoping to make the playoffs, I'll take the result proudly as being able to bounce back meant a lot to me,' she said. She also praised the organiser of the tournament and thanked her family, MGA (Malaysia Golf Association), sponsors and all those who have given her the support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
