Gaurav Gogoi slams PM Modi's remarks on ‘Chinese' features
GUWAHATI Gaurav Gogoi, one of three Congress Lok Sabha members from Assam, has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for remarks concerning the physical features of Chinese people, asserting that such comments are deeply traumatic for individuals from the northeastern States, who face similar stereotyping across India. Addressing media persons in New Delhi on Wednesday (May 28, 2025), Mr. Gogoi, who was recently appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, said the Prime Minister should direct his attention to pressing issues such as bilateral trade and the border situation with China, instead of making observations on physical appearance. 'Recently, while referring to China, the Prime Minister made light of the physical features of the Chinese, especially with respect to the shape of their eyes. When young men and women come from the northeast to different parts of India, they are often teased for the same physical features,' Mr. Gogoi said. Also read: Gaurav Gogoi denies links with Pakistan; Himanta says he will provide proof by September 'Such language only perpetuates the harassment and is used to taunt and tease the people of the northeast,' he added, cautioning that remarks of this nature reinforce harmful stereotypes. The Congress MP said that young people from the northeast routinely share their experiences of discrimination when they travel to metropolitan cities for education or employment. 'I must ask him to be also sensitive, as these (certain physical features) have caused a lot of trauma for young people of the northeast, who often complain to me when they come to Delhi, Bombay, or Pune for their studies,' he said. Mr. Gogoi reiterated that national leaders have a responsibility to exercise restraint and empathy in their public discourse, particularly when referring to communities that have historically faced marginalisation.

"Deep-rooted Pakistani agent...": Assam CM Sarma continues jab at Gaurav Gogoi on Pak visit
Guwahati (Assam) [India], May 28 (ANI): After having levelled fresh allegations against Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continued his jab at the opposition leader, describing him as a 'deep-rooted Pakistani agent.' The Assam Chief Minister claimed that Gogoi had only revealed 10 per cent about his visit to Pakistan and that he and his wife are deeply involved in anti-India activities. Refuting the Congress MP's clarification on his visit to Pakistan, Sarma said that his visit to the neighbouring country had nothing to do with his wife's professional assignment and was an independent visit approved by the Interior Department of Pakistan. Addressing a press conference, Sarma said, 'This man (Gaurav Gogoi) is openly a deep-rooted Pakistani agent. No Assamese will ever forget the supreme sacrifice of Jintu Gogoi (an Indian Army officer who lost his life in the line of duty during the Kargil War) or the Pahalgam incident. No Assamese will be fine with justifying the visit to Pakistan. 'Whatever he (Gaurav Gogoi) has revealed is only 10 per cent. He and his wife are deeply involved in anti-India activities. His son was born in India and later got British citizenship. He surrendered his son's Indian passport. There are very serious allegations. I have documents to prove his wife's involvement in collecting Indian Intelligence input. I will reveal details on September 10,' he said. Sarma accused the Congress leader of clarifying his visit to Pakistan a day after Congress appointed him president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee with the sole purpose of dethroning Bhupen Borah. 'The entire point was to dethrone Bhupen Borah. He (Gogoi) could have admitted that before his appointment. He is very smart. He knows that he has to admit. So, he admitted that after taking the appointment letter as the Congress president, but today, he also made a very wrong statement. His Pakistan visit had nothing to do with his wife. That was an independent visit with the approval of the Interior Department of Pakistan,' said Sarma. 'This is about national security, about Bharat. This has nothing to do with wife was snooping on our IB. I have documents to prove that. It was all because of taking advantage of Tarun Gogoi's position. They crafted their role within the Indian establishment. It was snooping on behalf of a particular climate activist group,' he added. Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president on Wednesday had earlier today responded to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's allegations regarding his visit to Pakistan and clarified that the trip took place over a decade ago, in 2013, and was related to his wife's professional assignment. Hitting back at Assam CM Sarma's allegations, the Congress MP said that the subject of his visit is being used to 'defame him.' 'The ruling party's daily bread is defaming someone. They are making a C-grade cinema on this topic, which they announced will be released on September 10. This is going to prove a flop,' Gogoi said. Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Gogoi of maintaining proximity with the Pakistani establishment. The accusations came after Gogoi admitted to visiting Pakistan. Continuing his tirade against the Congress MP, Sarma also said that Gaurav Gogoi's acceptance of visiting Pakistan is not the end but the 'beginning of a serious issue. Sarma said that the Assam government will publicise related evidence on September 10 once the Special Investigation Team submits its report. 'Finally, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has admitted that he visited Pakistan. But let us be very clear -- this is just the beginning, not the end. What lies ahead is far more serious. There exists every reasonable ground, supported by credible inputs and documented information, to suggest that Gogoi has maintained proximity with the Pakistani establishment,' posted Sarma on X. The Assam government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter, which is expected to conclude its inquiry by September 10. The government has promised to make the findings public, citing transparency and accountability. 'The Government of Assam, committed to transparency and accountability, will make everything public on September 10, once the Special Investigation Team (SIT) concludes its comprehensive inquiry. The people of Assam and the nation deserve the truth -- and they shall have it, in full. But the people will also not forget -- nor forgive -- the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi for deliberately promoting such a dangerous and compromised individual into the public life of our country,' his post added. Sarma's statement has sparked a political controversy, with the Congress party facing flak for allegedly promoting a 'dangerous and compromised' individual. This also comes a day after Congress appointed party leader Gaurav Gogoi as the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, along with three other working presidents, including Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey and Pradip Sarkar. In a press release dated May 26, the All-India Congress Committee stated, 'Congress President has appointed the President and Working Presidents of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee as follows, with immediate effect. President Gaurav Gogoi; Working Presidents---Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, Pradip Sarkar.' (ANI)

Sarma flags concerns after Gogoi's Pak visit admission
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the fact that the newly-appointed Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi has admitted that he visited Pakistan and that his wife worked there for a year only shows that what will unravel in future will be far more serious. Sarma's comments came after Gaurav told media persons in New Delhi, "About 14-15 years ago, my wife, who is a well-known expert in public policy, worked on an international project in South Asia focused on climate change. She spent one year in Pakistan before returning to India around 2012-13. Since then, she has continued her work and took up a job in India in 2015. I also remember going with her once, in 2013. So, they are making an issue of it as their work is only to demean, and that's why they are creating this whole thing like a C-grade Bollywood movie." In response, Sarma stated on X, "Finally, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has admitted that he visited Pakistan. But let us be very clear - this is just the beginning, not the end. What lies ahead is far more serious. There exists every reasonable ground, supported by credible inputs and documented information, to suggest that Shri Gogoi has maintained proximity with the Pakistani establishment. The government of Assam, committed to transparency and accountability, will make everything public on 10th September, once the Special Investigation Team (SIT) concludes its comprehensive inquiry. The people of Assam and the nation deserve the truth - and they shall have it, in full. But the people will also not forget - nor forgive - the Congress party and Shri Rahul Gandhi for deliberately promoting such a dangerous and compromised individual into the public life of our country." Sarma said that what Gaurav has said is just 10% of the real facts -- the rest would be revealed on September 10. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Crossout 2.0: Supercharged Crossout Play Now Undo
