Cong slams govt over threat to migrant Muslims in state
Guwahati: Assam Congress has accused the state govt of failing to protect the constitutional rights of migrant Muslims of Bangladesh-origin, known as 'Miyas', in upper Assam. The party has criticized the govt for allegedly being a mute spectator as indigenous youth and student groups prevent these migrants from entering the region, calling it a blatant violation of their right to free movement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ripun Bora, former president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, addressed the media at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, highlighting the plight of workers from lower Assam who have been labeled as 'Miyas' and forced to flee. "These are Muslims seeking work and livelihood, not land grabbers," Bora asserted, emphasizing their contribution to the GDP. The Congress leader's remarks follow renewed threats from local groups demanding 'Miyas' leave upper Assam within 48 hours. Tensions escalated in Charaideo district when a Muslim family, armed with sharp weapons, confronted local organization members allegedly searching for migrant Muslims. The Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad has threatened a 100-hour bandh if their demands are not met. Bora expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation, urging indigenous groups to maintain harmony and condemning the state govt's inaction. He accused the BJP-led govt, under CM , of failing to ensure public safety and criticized the chief minister's call for citizens to arm themselves. Bora demanded the governor dismiss CM Sarma, alleging that mob violence is occurring under his watch, leading to a severe breakdown of law and order. He reiterated the Congress party's stance on the Assam Accord, which mandates the deportation of anyone entering Assam after March 25, 1971, while condemning the harassment of Indian citizens. The Congress leader also took aim at Sarma's policies, questioning his commitment to Assamese identity and nationalism. "How can someone who disregards the Assam Accord and enforces the CAA claim to love Assam?" Bora challenged, calling for immediate action to restore peace and order in the state.

The directive follows instructions from its president Gaurav Gogoi. This change is being implemented ahead of Kharge and Rahul's upcoming rally near Chaygaon, on the outskirts of Guwahati, scheduled for July 16. On July 16, All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi will visit Assam to participate in the Assam Pradesh Congress workers' meeting and gathering. "To welcome the two beloved leaders to the sacred land of Assam, the Pradesh Congress's social media and IT department has launched a special initiative. Barak Valley's connectivity crisis leaves 40L stranded: Gogoi to PM
1 2 Silchar: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has urged PM Narendra Modi to urgently intervene in the worsening connectivity crisis of the Barak Valley, highlighting the region's continued isolation due to repeated disruptions in rail and road infrastructure. In a letter addressed to the PM on Thursday, Gogoi said the current condition of both railway and highway networks has reached a "critical low", leaving nearly 40 lakh residents of the valley stranded and disconnected from the rest of the country. Citing repeated breakdowns on the Lumding–Badarpur railway section, the Congress leader said, "This stretch passing through the fragile hills of Dima Hasao has become synonymous with chronic disruption." He noted that in the last five years alone, the section has witnessed at least seven major breakdowns caused by landslides, embankment failures, and weak infrastructure. "Rail services remain suspended for weeks, severely impacting life and economic activities," he added. The memorandum also flagged the deteriorating condition of national highways, including NH-6, NH-27 and NH-37, which frequently suffer from landslides and damaged culverts — particularly near Sonapur, Jatinga, and Harangajao. Gogoi cited the recent collapse of the Harang bridge on the Silchar–Kalain route, despite Rs 137 crore spent on repairs, as an example of the poor state of road infrastructure. "With both road and rail links disrupted, the Barak Valley is completely cut off. The only alternative — air travel — has become prohibitively expensive," Gogoi wrote. Airfares between Silchar and Guwahati have surged to Rs 15,000–Rs 18,000 one-way, over ten times the rate on comparable routes such as Agartala–Guwahati, the letter pointed out. Calling the situation "untenable," Gogoi appealed for a comprehensive, time-bound roadmap from the Centre and listed a series of demands. These include double-laning and landslide-proofing of the Lumding–Badarpur rail line using modern geo-barriers, fast-tracking the alternative Lanka–Chandranathpur railway corridor, regulated UDAN-subsidised flights during disruptions, among others. He added that the connectivity bottleneck is hampering economic growth, deterring investors, and adversely affecting healthcare and education in the region. "Despite repeated appeals by civil society and elected representatives, a sustainable and accountable solution is yet to be seen," the APCC chief said.

Much bigger 'sheesh mahal' in Diphu: Gaurav Gogoi targets lavish building of Assam CM's 'close friend'
GUWAHATI: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday alleged corruption in the construction of a lavish building in Assam's Diphu allegedly owned by a "close friend" of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and said it is much bigger "sheesh mahal" than that in Delhi which was occupied by a former CM. Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, also claimed that nobody in Assam is following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mantra of 'na khaaonga, na khane doonga' (will neither indulge in corruption, nor allow anyone to indulge in corruption). He made the allegations through a video which was shot in-front of an under construction building in Diphu, the headquarters of the Karbi Anglong district. The video was posted on Gogoi's Facebook and Instagram handles. Gogoi said during the assembly elections in Delhi, the BJP allegedly indulged in politics over the bungalow of former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. The BJP alleged corruption and claimed that it was a "sheesh mahal", he said. "I have come to Diphu today and standing before this big bungalow. I heard that this bungalow belongs to a close friend of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. It looks like a bigger 'sheesh mahal' in Diphu than Delhi's 'sheesh mahal'," Gogoi said. The Congress leader claimed that crores of rupees were spent on this "sheesh mahal" in Diphu and wanted to know whether the Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax department would do something on this. "I want to tell Prime Minister Narendra Modi that no one in Assam is following his Mantra of 'na khaaonga, na khane doonga'," he said. Ever since his appointment as the APCC president, Gogoi has been travelling Assam extensively, meeting a section of people and party workers in a bid to prepare the Congress for the assembly elections slated for early next year. He has also targeted the state's BJP government, its policies, CM Sarma and his colleagues on various issues.

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi writes to PM Modi seeking review of beneficiaries of AEECDF 2022-23
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi has written to Prime minister Narendra Modi seeking review of the beneficiaries of the Assistance to Entrepreneur for Establishment of Commercial Dairy Farming (2022-23). Gaurav who is Lok Sabha MP stated, 'I am writing to bring to your attention serious concerns regarding the implementation of the government supported scheme, "Assistance to Entrepreneur for Establishment of Commercial Dairy Farming (2022-23)", in the state of Assam. This scheme receives substantial financial support from the Government of Assam. Each unit is eligible for up to 50 lakh in subsidy. The objective is to promote genuine entrepreneurship in the dairy sector and strengthen milk production across the region. However, multiple reports and official documentation point to irregularities in the selection of beneficiaries.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The letter stated, 'Several recipients of the scheme's benefits appear to be family members or associates of Ministers and MLAs in the state government, while long-standing dairy farmers, particularly in districts like Bongaigaon, have reportedly been overlooked despite having applied multiple times and fulfilling the eligibility requirements. The exclusion of experienced dairy entrepreneurs raises concerns about the fairness and transparency of the selection process. Equally alarming is the response from the Chief Minister of Assam, who chose to justify the inclusion of ministers' family members in the list of dairy scheme beneficiaries.' Gogoi continued, 'This open endorsement of political favouritism has fuelled public outrage for undermining the constitutional values of equality and justice. It also reflects a serious Live Events breach of the oath of office, which obliges public representatives to act impartially and in the public interest, casting doubt on the state government's adherence to ethical governance and the rule of law. Separately, the Gorukhuti agricultural project has also come under scrutiny. Funded through public money and intended for community benefit, the project included the procurement of high-yield Gir cows from Gujarat'. The congress leader stated, 'Official records indicate that these were allocated to several elected representatives, including the firm owned by the wife of Jayanta Malla Baruah (Cabinet Minister & MLA, Nalbari), Bhupen Pegu (MLA, Jonai), Utpal Borah (MLA, Gohpur), Diganta Kalita (MLA, Kamalpur), and Dilip Saikia (Member of Parliament). The diversion of resources and livestock under a project supported by over 25.5 crore in public funds compromises the very objective of Government programme designed to promote inclusive development. Sir, these actions go against the very principles of transparency, accountability, and equitable access." "If politically connected individuals are allowed to siphon off benefits meant for the poor, we risk alienating the very people these schemes are meant to uplift. In the interest of justice and public trust, I urge your office to instruct the government to initiate an enquiry into the matter at the earliest. I trust that this matter will be taken with the seriousness it deserves. I look forward to your prompt intervention on these issues'.
