Ripun Bora, former president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, addressed the media at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, highlighting the plight of workers from lower Assam who have been labeled as 'Miyas' and forced to flee. "These are Muslims seeking work and livelihood, not land grabbers," Bora asserted, emphasizing their contribution to the GDP.
The Congress leader's remarks follow renewed threats from local groups demanding 'Miyas' leave upper Assam within 48 hours.
Tensions escalated in Charaideo district when a Muslim family, armed with sharp weapons, confronted local organization members allegedly searching for migrant Muslims. The Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad has threatened a 100-hour bandh if their demands are not met.
Bora expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation, urging indigenous groups to maintain harmony and condemning the state govt's inaction. He accused the BJP-led govt, under CM
, of failing to ensure public safety and criticized the chief minister's call for citizens to arm themselves.
Bora demanded the governor dismiss CM Sarma, alleging that mob violence is occurring under his watch, leading to a severe breakdown of law and order. He reiterated the Congress party's stance on the Assam Accord, which mandates the deportation of anyone entering Assam after March 25, 1971, while condemning the harassment of Indian citizens.
The Congress leader also took aim at Sarma's policies, questioning his commitment to Assamese identity and nationalism. "How can someone who disregards the Assam Accord and enforces the CAA claim to love Assam?" Bora challenged, calling for immediate action to restore peace and order in the state.

‘We need to ask them…': Shashi Tharoor's question for the US after 50 % tariffs on India
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday responded to the 50 per cent tariffs imposed by United States President Donald Trump on India. Calling the situation 'concerning', Tharoor said that the US was a country which shared 'close relations' with India.(PTI) While suggesting that India retaliate by raising tariffs on the US to 50 per cent, Tharoor also put forward a question. '.. .We need to ask them, do they not value our relationship? If India doesn't matter to them, they should also not matter to us,' Tharoor said. The Congress MP said that India's average tariffs on American goods stood at 17 per cent currently, adding that they should be raised to the same level as the US. 'Why should we stop at 17 per cent? We should also raise it to 50 per cent...' the Thiruvananthapuram MP said. Calling the situation 'concerning', he said that the US was a country which shared 'close relations' with India, with the two countries working as 'strategic partners'. 'If that country has changed its behaviour, then India will have to think about many in the coming two to three weeks, we can hold talks and find a way out,' Tharoor said, adding that India would have to look after its own interests. Speaking about the tariffs, Trump said that they would have an impact, given that India has a trade of $90 billion with the US. '…If everything becomes 50 per cent more expensive, buyers will also think why should they buy Indian things?' Tharoor asked. He further said that no country was allowed to threaten India in this manner. Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing additional 25 per cent tariffs on imports from India, taking the tariffs to 50 per cent. Trump cited India's trade with Russia, especially its purchase of oil from the country, as the reason for the tariffs. The Ministry of External Affairs called the move ""unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", while adding that India would take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.

Actor Vinayakan's social media post draws criticism
Social media posts by actor Vinayakan have drawn sharp criticism from certain sections of society. Mr. Vinayakan had criticised filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan the other day for his statement made at the recently held film conclave organised by the State government. He had also dragged singer Yesudas into the controversy using an expletive-laden social media post. Muhammad Shiyas, Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) president, on Friday (August 8, 2025) termed him a public nuisance and sought government intervention to rein in the actor. The government shall either provide him with the required medical treatment or initiate legal action for the social menace caused by him. The protection given to the actor, who is known for his unruly and uncivilised behaviour, often under the influence of intoxicants, would send a wrong signal to society, he said. Mr. Shiyas said people will be forced to handle the actor on the streets if he fails to mend his ways. Playback singer G. Venugopal joined the issue on the day with a social media post criticising the actor for his below-the-belt criticism of Mr. Yesudas. Terming Mr. Yesudas as a revolutionary in the field of music, Mr. Venugopal said the legendary singer, who belonged to the Latin Catholic community, created history in the world of music, where Brahmanism once ruled the roost. The singer who devoted his life to music and engaged himself in reinventing and refining the music was showered with abuse under the cover of political correctness. One should treat Mr. Yesudas as a singer and not as a social reformer, referring to some of the controversial statements of the singer, Mr. Venugopal said. Meanwhile, Mr. Vinayakan took to social media once again on Friday with an abusive post on a woman media person. The actor's social media post following the death of veteran communist leader V.S. Achuthanandan and Congress leader Oommen Chandy had invited criticism.
