Sukuk misuse case: Tan Sri to be quizzed soon following hospital discharge, says Azam

KUALA LUMPUR: A Tan Sri who is under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds linked to a Klang Valley highway project is expected to be called in for questioning soon. The individual, who was recently discharged from hospital, is also being investigated for overseas asset ownership and high-stakes gambling activities involving millions of ringgit. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the Tan Sri, who is believed to be a highway concession holder, had yet to give his statement due to recent medical treatment at a private hospital, reported Astro Awani. 'A statement has not yet been recorded from the Tan Sri, but I have been informed that doctors have recently allowed him to be discharged. My officers will be contacting him soon to arrange an appointment,' said Azam on Saturday (June 7). He added that while the individual is a key witness in the case, MACC has already recorded statements from 45 other witnesses, some of whom have been recalled to assist further in the investigation. 'He is indeed one of the individuals we have yet to question, but we already have testimonies from other witnesses. I cannot confirm whether additional witnesses will be required after his statement,' Azam said. According to sources, MACC had earlier obtained medical confirmation from the doctor regarding the Tan Sri's condition before proceeding to plan for his interview. The investigation centres around the suspected misappropriation of sukuk bonds intended for the construction of a highway. On June 3 last year, MACC disclosed that they had seized assets valued about RM143mil from the individual as part of the probe. This included luxury vehicles and properties owned by the Tan Sri, both locally and abroad, including in London and Switzerland. The seized assets comprised 14 personal bank accounts totalling RM4.5mil, eight company accounts with RM33mil, a luxury condominium and a parcel of land valued at RM24.5mil, nine luxury cars worth RM7.65mil, designer watches valued at around RM25mil, handbags worth RM3mil, jewellery and diamonds estimated at RM6mil, and four horses valued at RM400,000. Other seized items include high-end alcoholic beverages worth RM3mil, foreign assets estimated at over RM15mil, and gambling-related activities involving about RM20mil. Azam said asset declaration notices have been handed to the Tan Sri and other related parties.

Journalists' credibility hinges on code of ethics

KUALA LUMPUR: The code of ethics for journalists remains the key to determining a journalist's professional credibility, especially amid challenges posed by the digital era, including advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the rise of 'instant' journalists. Astro Awani's Head of Multi-Platform News Innovation, Shafizan Johari, said the code of ethics is akin to a set of values that must be upheld by anyone aspiring to be a credible journalist in news reporting. 'We are a civilised society, and every civilised society certainly upholds its own code of manners. In the context of journalism in Malaysia, we must take it upon ourselves to instil and practise this code of ethics in our daily work,' he said. He said this when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara last night, which discussed the topic 'Kewartawanan Era Baharu: Pintar dan Beretika' (New Era in Journalism: Smart and Ethical). The programme also featured Bernama TV broadcast journalist and presenter Norliyana Zulkifli, as well as Media Prima Berhad multimedia journalist and news presenter Mas Zharif Zhafri Aziz Desa. He also stressed that in today's media landscape, journalistic ethics are more important than the rush for speed or the race to be the first to break the news. 'For media organisations, being the first to break the news is often seen as exclusive. But to me, speed alone is no longer relevant. What matters more is the discipline to follow editorial principles, step by step, process by process, to ensure every report is authentic, accurate, and comprehensive. 'Don't rush to publish news without going through the proper editorial process, because that is where the identity of a (true) journalist lies,' he said. Meanwhile, Mas Zharif Zhafri said that understanding the code of ethics in journalism should be instilled from the university level to produce individuals who fully grasp the responsibility of delivering information authentically and ethically. 'The code of ethics is what sets apart a true journalist from a citizen journalist. In my view, the code of ethics for journalists is something to be proud of, as it guides us in delivering authentic and accurate information,' he said. Echoing a similar sentiment, Norliyana believes every journalist must adhere to the principles of journalistic ethics and suggests that the code of ethics be more widely shared with the public to promote a deeper understanding of authentic news reporting. 'With so many people wanting to become citizen journalists, perhaps the code of ethics for journalists can be shared more widely so that everyone, whether they are mass communication students or not, can better u

PKR sec-gen Fuziah to officiate PKR youth, women's wings congresses

JOHOR BARU: Speculation on who would officiate the PKR Youth and PKR Wanita congresses in Johor Baru on Thursday (May 22) has been resolved after PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh confirmed to Astro Awani that she would be taking on the responsibility. The Malay language portal also reported that although it was customary for the party deputy president to officiate the congresses of both wings, the incumbent, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, had earlier confirmed he would not attend. Quoting online reports, Astro Awani reported that Fuziah had said the responsibility for officiating the congresses was given to her because other senior leaders were involved in the central leadership council (MPP) elections. Although Rafizi confirmed he would not be officiating at the congress for these wings, he will still be in Johor Baru on May 20 for the final Hiruk series before attending the PKR national elections and congress on May 23 and 24. Rafizi's campaign goes by the acronym Hiruk, which stands for Hidupkan Idealisme Reformasi Dalam Ujian Kuasa (Reviving Reform Idealism in a Test of Power).

Nik Nazmi: Without strong action, Malayan tapir could face same fate as Sumatran rhino

HULU SELANGOR, April 26 — The loss of Malaysia's last Sumatran rhinoceros should serve as a wake-up call to protect other endangered species, particularly the Malayan tapir, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said today. According to Astro Awani, the minister warned that without clear and coordinated efforts to protect the species from the pressures of development, the Malayan tapir could meet the same fate. 'It's a reminder to us all, without comprehensive efforts and strong commitment, it's not impossible that the tapir, if not properly protected, could also fall victim to unsustainable development,' he was quoted as saying. Nik Nazmi also expressed appreciation to the Selangor government for allocating RM1.6 million from its Biodiversity and Forest Conservation financial incentive fund to the state's Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) for tapir conservation efforts. He made these remarks during a visit to the Sungai Dusun Wildlife Conservation Centre today, in conjunction with World Tapir Day celebrations. The Malayan tapir, or Tapirus indicus, is one of Malaysia's iconic wildlife species and is fully protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). As reported by Astro Awani, between 2020 and 2024, a total of 112 Malayan tapirs were killed in road accidents involving federal roads, state roads and highways. Malaysia lost its last Sumatran rhinoceros, named Iman, on November 23, 2019.

Malaysia gas pipeline inferno injures 100: fire officials

A massive fire caused by a gas pipeline leak forced people from their homes and injured more than 100 during Eid celebrations near Malaysia's capital on Tuesday, fire officials said. The inferno, which was visible kilometres away, was caused by "a gas pipeline leak stretching approximately 500 metres (1,600 feet)", said fire officials in Selangor state near Kuala Lumpur. The valve to the affected pipeline belonging to Malaysia's state-run oil firm Petronas has been shut off, the fire officials said in a statement. While the early morning blaze was coming under control in the afternoon, more than 100 people were injured, the fire department told AFP. About 60 of the injured were hospitalised, Selangor deputy police chief Mohamad Zaini Abu Hassan was quoted as saying by local broadcaster Astro Awani. No deaths were reported but about 50 houses were affected by the blaze, the fire department said. Residents were enjoying a public holiday for Eid celebrations in Muslim-majority Malaysia when they were forced to flee the suburban area. Nizam Mohamad Asnizam, 49, who lives 100 metres from the site of the fire, fled from his house with his family in his car. "When I woke up, I saw the fire raging, with an extraordinary sound. I have never experienced a fire with this kind of sound. The sound was terrifying. It felt like a jet engine was next to me," he told AFP. "Stepping on the floor was like stepping on a hot wok. The heat was like putting your head in an oven, it felt like I was burning." Dashcam footage shared online showed a column of fire from what appears to be an explosion, creating a massive fireball that shot into the sky. Another video shared online showed a residential area covered in smoke while a huge fire blazed in the background. Singed trees and melted cars are also seen in the video. Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari said in a Facebook post that a temporary relief centre had been set up at a nearby mosque. He warned the public to stay away from the area affected by the fire while investigations and rescue work were being carried out.
