Groom vanishes, father steps in to wed bride in viral wedding drama

SOMETIMES, we pay our internet bills not because we want to remain connected to the digital world.
We pay it, and gladly too, because the cyberspace is filled with bizarre, jaw-dropping stories that make us pause and think that this is a very fascinating planet that we live on.
And today's novelty news has something to do with marriage. Netizen @jllmisai brought to light a story where the groom apparently ran away from his wedding ceremony, leaving the bride and everyone else in the cold.
The solution? His father was forced to marry the bride instead.
While it is difficult to wrap one's head over the story, some netizens conjectured that the father had always wanted a second wife and it was just an elaborate setup for him to get one.
The post was also filled with sarcastic comments from netizens who said they too were willing to shoulder the 'responsibility.'
Apparently the story came to the attention of netizens when a video went viral on social media.
In it, a man can be seen wearing a long-sleeved batik shirt, sitting opposite someone believed to be his father.
The video then continues with the solemnisation of a marriage between the father and the woman who was supposed to become his daughter-in-law.
According to TribunNews, the woman's elder brother said their family had arrived at the wedding venue as soon as they received the news.
'The guests had already turned up in response to the wedding invitation. The groom's family then informed us that their son had gone missing and could not be contacted,' he said, adding that his younger sister had been in a long-term relationship with her fiance.
He further shared that their family suffered losses of up to Rp25 mil (approximately RM7,630) in managing the wedding preparations. As for the father-in-law, we have only words of respect for the 'sacrifice' he must make. —July 18, 2025

Ahmad Aslam: Polygamy is hard when you are young

Compiled by FAZLEENA AZIZ, and R. ARAVINTHAN I LUENCER Ahmad Aslam admitted that polygamy is difficult for him at a young age, Berita Harian reported. Aslam, whose full name is Ahmad Aslam Kasyfun Nazir Rashid, 25, said this was because he had to please many people. He sparked controversy when he married two women, one of whom was Marissa Dania, the daughter of actor Norman Hakim and ex-wife Abby Abadi. 'It's difficult, actually quite difficult. I can't comment further and in detail. I'm worried that this matter involves the sensitivities of many people,' he said at an event recently. Aslam married his first wife, Umisya Mazlan, in July 2020. The couple divorced in September 2023, before reconciling later. They have three children. He married Marissa in Songkhla, Thailand, on Dec 27, 2023. Aslam revealed that many of his followers asked him for advice on living a polygamous life each time when he went live on social media. > Residents of Pulau Aur near Mersing, Johor, are appealing for a free boat service to the island, Kosmo! reported. Most of them are forced to fork out at least RM220 each for the service presently. Hatasa Rabudin, 40, who lives in Mersing town, said the high cost of travel prevents him from visiting his mother, who resides on the island, more frequently. 'During the festive period, we have to fork out up to RM7,000 just to rent a ferry, which is shared with relatives who want to head back to the island,' he said. Kampung Pulau Aur Village Safety and Development Committee chairman Sabinah Md Salleh said the request for free boat service was justified as many were dependent on micro agriculture and seafood business. Dr M resting at IJN after feeling fatigued during birthday gathering

PUTRAJAYA: Initially smiling as he cycled on a tandem bike, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad eventually became fatigued during his birthday celebration in Putrajaya on Sunday (July 13), leaving with his wife before being able to cut the cake. His aide, Sufi Yusoff, informed Astro Awani that the former Prime Minister left the event and then was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) around 10am to rest. "Yes, Tun was truly fatigued. So he left the event early and is now resting. His condition is okay, but he has been advised to rest and is currently at IJN," he said. Sufi added that Dr Mahathir, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, is expected to be discharged from IJN later in the afternoon. The public picnic and potluck session was held to celebrate Dr Mahathir's 100th birthday at the Perdana Leadership Foundation. Although it was cut short due to his exhaustion, the event left a lasting impression on many Malaysians who gathered in Putrajaya. Nickozie Mazlan, a 51-year-old housewife from Selangor, along with her family and friends, designed a T-shirt featuring Dr Mahathir's face and a wooden block with his name engraved on it to gift him during the event. "A few of us had prepared these items to give to him, but unfortunately he had to leave early. Hopefully, we'll get another chance to present them to him," said Nickozie. She also mentioned that meeting Dr Mahathir and his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, was a great honour for her. Young politics enthusiast Su Wilma Ishika Mohd Azlan Shah, 21, who attended with over 20 people including friends and family, claimed the picnic had a memorable atmosphere despite having met Dr Mahathir several times before. "Dr Mahathir is an inspiring figure to me, especially as someone young, and I admire his leadership and resilience," said Su, a mass communication student from Shah Alam. "I also came today because Dr Siti Hasmah and I share the same birthday (July 12) and wanted to meet her as well, but I believe they had to leave early as Dr Mahathir was not feeling too well," she added. Retired engineer Ahmad Shukri Abdul Shukor, 63, brought 44 people from Setiawangsa to meet the former prime minister. "I brought in 44 residents from Bukit Setiawangsa to spend the morning with Dr Mahathir," said Ahmad. Ramchandran Sekaran, 47, a mechanic, brought his two children to the picnic in hopes of creating new memories for them. "It's my only chance to get my kids to meet a public figure like Dr Mahathir," said Ramchandran from Ampang. "Thanks to these public meetings, we are able to meet him for a short while and I'm able to introduce my children to the former prime minister at this young age," he added, referring to his two sons aged eight and 10. Also present at the event were Dr Mahathir's son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
