Call for transparent probe into tragedy

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad, Sherell Jeffrey Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Srikandi Bersatu Sipitang Head Dayang Syafiqah Abdul Hamid wants an independent investigation carried out into the death of a teenager in Papar who is widely suspected to be a victim of bullying. Syafiqah who is also a Sabah youth activist called for the setting up of a special task force involving the police, Attorney General's Department, Ministry of Education and non-governmental organisations to conduct a transparent investigation without protection for any party involved. 'I express condolences to the family of Zara Qairina, a former SK Pantai Sipitang pupil,' she said in a statement. "This should never happen in any educational institution. "This is not an ordinary disciplinary issue. This is a crime and must be treated as such,' said Syafiqah who is also Sabah Imam Deputy Chairperson. She urged the Government to expedite the drafting of comprehensive anti-bullying legislation that would define bullying in all its forms namely physical, verbal, emotional, cyber and power-based while establishing progressive punishments ranging from counselling to imprisonment. She noted that currently, Malaysia lacks specific anti-bullying laws, with cases handled under various provisions including the Penal Code, Children Act 2001 and Education Act 1996. This legal gap, according to Syafiqah, causes many cases to not be taken seriously. She also called for stricter school and hostel safety protocols, regular independent audits, mandatory training for educators and staff and the deployment of psychologists in every district. "The time has come to stop the culture of silence and protecting perpetrators. "Our education system should educate, not oppress,' she said. The incident sparked various reactions and public concern, including allegations of bullying at the school with individuals sharing testimonies of parents whose children had previously attended the school. One netizen claimed some parents decided to transfer their children to other schools because of the bullying incidents. Among the disclosures was an allegation that the bullying incident was only discovered several months after it occurred and that the matter was reported to the school management. However, that it was not pursued due to the victim's inconsistent testimony caused by the trauma experienced. In another post, a mother claimed that her child cried and shared the experiences they had while staying in the dormitory. The allegations included being forced to sleep on the floor, receiving punishments, being ordered to wash senior students' dishes and fetching water from the ground floor of the building. The mother said her child was too scared to speak up to the wardens or their parents as they were worried about how the other students might react. She said her child became more withdrawn and lost their usual spark every time they had to go back. This worried the family so much that they decided it was best to transfer the child to another school. The same individual uploaded a screenshot of a message from the mother of the student involved, stating that she would not forgive those who caused suffering to her child. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Former World Cup-winning Sri Lanka cricketer indicted for match-fixing in Lanka Premier League

Former Sri Lanka off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been indicted by the Hambantota High Court for attempting to lure a fellow player for match-fixing during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL) . The Attorney General's Department said this becomes the first such indictment of a national level cricketer for match-fixing under the country's recently-introduced anti-corruption law. He was arrested and released on bail in 2023. The 40-year-old played one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka between 2012 and 2016 for a combined haul of 78 wickets. He was a member of Sri Lanka's 2014 T20 World Cup-winning squad. According to local media reports, he made the corrupt approach to another national player Tharindu Ratnayake, who was playing for Colombo Kings at that time. "Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing," a report in the Sri Lankan 'Daily Mirror' stated.

Former Sri Lanka spinner Sachithra Senanayake charged with match-fixing

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake has been formally indicted by the Hambantota High Court in connection with a match-fixing attempt during the 2020 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The 40-year-old off-spinner, who represented Sri Lanka across formats from 2012 to 2016, has been charged under Sri Lanka's recently enacted anti-corruption legislation—the first instance of a national player facing such charges. Senanayake, who was previously arrested and later granted bail in 2023, is alleged to have made corrupt approaches to fellow players in an attempt to influence match outcomes. According to the Attorney General's Department, this indictment marks a significant moment in the country's efforts to clamp down on corruption in sport. Approach made to team-mate during inaugural LPL Local reports have identified Tharindu Ratnayake as one of the players Senanayake attempted to contact during the inaugural LPL season. At the time, Ratnayake was representing Colombo Kings. The former off-spinner allegedly reached out to him in an attempt to convince him to engage in corrupt practices related to match-fixing. In addition, Senanayake is also accused of contacting two other unnamed players, reportedly through phone calls made from Dubai. The aim, authorities believe, was to lure these cricketers into compromising the integrity of matches during the tournament's opening year. Once a world champion, now in controversy Senanayake had a respectable international career, taking a total of 78 wickets in one Test, 49 ODIs, and 24 T20Is. He was also part of Sri Lanka's squad that lifted the ICC T20 World Cup in 2014. The charges have sparked concern within cricketing circles in Sri Lanka. While no convictions have yet been made, officials are treating the matter seriously. A senior legal source said this case could set a precedent for how corruption in Sri Lankan cricket is prosecuted going forward. The case will now proceed through the legal system, with more developments expected in the coming weeks.
