The final home stretch for the No. 8 Auburn Tigers begins Thursday at Plainsman Park when the South Carolina Gamecocks visit the Plains for a key late-season SEC series.
Auburn enters the series with confidence after taking two games against Tennessee on the road last weekend. Auburn outscored the Vols, 17-7 in three games and boasted strong pitching from Samuel Dutton, Christian Chatterton, and Cade Fisher. The series win over Tennessee was Auburn's second in a row, and fifth overall in SEC play. All but one of Auburn's SEC series wins this season has come against ranked teams. Auburn owns tiebreakers over Kentucky (No. 24), Alabama (No. 8), LSU (No. 3), and Tennessee (No. 7).
Auburn has a positive postseason outlook heading into the series, as D1Baseball projects them to take the No. 6 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and has them at No. 3 in the latest RPI update. A successful weekend at home against the Gamecocks will not boost its stock as much as a struggling weekend will hurt them. South Carolina is considered a "quad-3" team by D1Baseball's RPI standards by checking in at No. 65 ahead of this weekend's action.
The Gamecocks are 26-23, and 5-19 in SEC play leading into its series at Auburn. South Carolina won its first SEC series of the season during the weekend of April 17 by taking two of three games from Ole Miss in Columbia, but has fallen in every other series to teams such as Texas A&M, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. They are coming off of a series sweep by Florida, a series that saw Florida win games by scores of 22-3 and 8-0 in run-rule fashion.
