Celebrating Our Grandmothers, Aunts, Bonus Moms, And Godmothers On Mother's Day

Multigenerational family getty Almost 22 years ago, just one week before my birthday, I received one of the most wonderful gifts ever…a nephew! Then, just five months later, a few days before Valentine's Day, I welcomed a sweet niece into the family. Over the years, my siblings and friends blessed me with six more adorable kids to shower with love. It's truly been a joy and honor to be a part of their lives through both the significant milestones and the little everyday moments, like the first day of school, prom, college move-in days, sporting events, and cozy movie nights together. I know many women who take on nurturing roles like being a bonus mom or grandmother, and they feel the same way. Look! I can stand getty Although I love being crowned 'The Cool Aunt', being an aunt, godmother, or any other nurturing figure is about more than just having fun. It's all about supporting parents as they guide children on the right path. This means engaging in those hard conversations, providing answers to questions we might never have anticipated, and ensuring that we align with mom and dad when establishing rules. For some individuals, a maternal role might involve providing financial support or stepping into caregiving responsibilities. Mother's Day is a truly special occasion to celebrate not only our biological mothers but also all the outstanding mother figures who have showered us with love, support, nurturing, inspiration, and guidance throughout our lives. This holiday can be a little challenging for those who may not have strong relationships with their mothers or whose mothers may no longer be with us. However, it can also serve as a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the incredible contributions of all the women who have stepped up to offer love and guidance. Whether it's a stepmother, grandmother, aunt, godmother, or a beloved family friend, these extraordinary women hold invaluable places in our hearts and lives, enriching them in countless ways. Celebrating them is an honor in itself. Grandson and grandmother embracing getty As you create your messages to share on social media or plan your phone calls, consider reaching out to those incredible women who have thoughtfully invested in you and your children. It's lovely to think about having the kiddos record sweet video messages, sending a heartfelt card in the mail, or stopping by the local grocer to pick up a cheerful bouquet for those who live nearby. What a thoughtful way to brighten someone's day! If you're still on the hunt for some last-minute gift ideas, don't worry! You can explore these excellent suggestions that are mostly available at local shops. For others, you can have them delivered in just a few days! With these fantastic finds, no one will ever guess you shopped at the last minute. You might find it surprising, but Dick's Sporting Goods is a fantastic place to discover delightful Mother's Day gifts—perfect for those women who aren't necessarily in the market for a new fishing rod! Whether it's a spacious Bogg Bag for the beach, a new Yeti tumbler, her new fave Calia shorts, or a new pair of Birkenstocks, there's something for everyone on your list. Bogg Bag Erin Nason I've discovered some fantastic deals on electronics like headphones and tablets from cell phone stores! My latest treasure, which I picked up from T-Mobile, is the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which would make a fabulous gift for anyone who's tech-savvy or ready to dive into their content creation journey. A simple button press lets these glasses capture photos or videos from a wonderfully unique point of view! Plus, they're super stylish! Ray Ban Meta Glasses META Consider upgrading her watch game with a Pixel Watch 3! It comes packed with all the essential smart watch features, like taking calls and texts directly from your wrist or tracking fitness goals. I love how seamlessly it integrates into the Google ecosystem—there's no need for extra apps, and everything syncs beautifully across devices. Plus, it can double as a remote control or even generate a live camera feed! Google Pixel Watch 3 Google Pixel Choosing make-up and fragrances can be challenging, especially if you're unsure about someone's preferences, shades, or favorite brands. However, I have a few brands that I love recommending to anyone who might be hesitant to try something new, and they've never let me down! For skincare, Fresh is one of my favorites. Their products, like the soy face cleanser and moisturizer, fit seamlessly into any routine, making them perfect for beginners. Fresh Soy Face Cleanser Fresh Whether they're just starting or seasoned pros, the quick stick eyeshadow trio kit from Tarte is an absolute must-have! It makes transitioning from a lovely everyday look to full-on glam effortless. Each stick features beautifully pigmented shadow and eyeliner in warm neutral and golden tones that she'll adore. Quick Stick Eyeshadow Trio Tarte I cherish the warm memories of my grandmother and aunts wearing their stylish nightgowns and cozy robes. They always had such fun prints that brought smiles! With so many people embracing the joy of loungewear and matching pajama sets—especially among the younger crowd—it's hard not to recommend Print Fresh! You can delight your special lady with a lovely robe, some cute pajamas, or even elegant dresses. No matter your choice, she'll be the most stylish person in the room! Print Fresh Pajama Set PrintFresh For The Mom-Figures Who Are Beach Bums I've found one of the best swimwear brands, and I genuinely believe you should treat everyone you care about to a swimsuit from Lime Ricki! What better time than Mother's Day? I adore the prints and colorways, especially the exciting feature that allows you to reverse some of the suits and unveil a fresh pattern or color scheme! The styles range from traditional one-piece or full-coverage bikinis to modern tankinis. Trust me, she'll love unwrapping any of them! Model in Lime Ricki Swimsuit Lime Ricki As you prepare her for a fun day at the beach, why not add a lovely pair of Rothy's sandals? They'll complement any swimsuit beautifully, or even some comfy Print Fresh loungewear! They offer such incredible comfort, and that is a huge bonus! However you choose to celebrate, we hope your Mother's Day is a day of relaxation, love, and joy.

Short on studying, Harvard Law School Jeopardy! contestant wins nearly $138,000

In an Advertisement 'Be sure to tune in TONIGHT as Harvard Law student Andrew Hayes '25 makes an appearance on Jeopardy! Good luck Andrew, we're rooting for you,' The big victory comes after Hayes was hardly able to study for his first The biggest distraction came when Hayes' wife, Kaitlyn MacNair-Hayes, learned of a surprise pregnancy in early January, he said. 'Studying for Jeopardy! fell on my priority list a good deal,' said Hayes, who plans to spend some of the prize money on his baby's nursery room. Advertisement Baptist 'Bible Drill' shaped trivia knowledge Before his six-episode Jeopardy! run, the peak of Haye's trivia career came at age 10, when he won ' Competition, which 'was a little like quiz bowl,' included memorizing Bible facts and reciting lengthy passages from memory, he said. 'I was really a stand-out in this very small world,' Hayes said, with a laugh. He twice won the top prize in Mississippi's statewide Bible Drill competition, earning a certificate, but no prize money. 'Not a very lucrative circuit,' Hayes said. Hayes said the experience, along with many casserole-fueled trivia television nights at Aunt Tommie's, taught him to remain calm in front of audiences and not to linger over missed questions. To this day, Hayes said, his favorite trivia category is 'anything having to do with the Bible.' Since entering Harvard Law School, Hayes has not once participated in trivia night at a Boston or Cambridge bar, he said. That streak will be broken on Wednesday, April 23, when Hayes will be the guest of honor at the Surprise pregnancy ruins trivia study plan In November 2023, Hayes and his wife Kaitlyn, 27, were given 'devastating' news they'd never have children due to medical issues, he said. But in December 2024 ‐ roughly the same time he got invited to film Jeopardy! ‐ the couple believes they conceived, Hayes said, given how Kaitlyn confirmed she was pregnant in early January 2025. The shocking pregnancy news less than two months before taping threw Hayes' 'ambitious' study checklist off track, he said. Instead of giving himself a last-minute crash course in his worst categories, which he said include Shakespeare and baseball, Hayes began planning with his wife for their new child's arrival. Advertisement 'I told my wife before going on the show that I was trying to have a good attitude, and recognize that most people who go on the show lose,' Hayes said. But he won the first episode and kept on winning, getting lucky with categories including foreign words and phrases, Quentin Tarantino films, geography, American history and chemistry, Hayes said. Another The soon-to-be law school graduate will be celebrating a lot in the next year, including a clerkship with Judge Cory Wilson at the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Jackson, Miss. Oh, and potentially a Caribbean vacation after the clerkship ends in the summer of 2026. 'That'd be a nice, non-utilitarian use for some of the money,' Hayes said, adding it will likely be an adult-only trip coinciding with his future child's first birthday. Hayes' six wins were one more than needed to qualify for Jeopardy's Tournament of Champions, an annual tournament featuring people who've won the most regular episodes, which Hayes said will likely be filmed in January 2026. 'I didn't expect to win one, winning more than that was just icing on the cake,' he said. Claire Thornton can be reached at

Sioux Honey Co-Op's Brands are the First Honey Brands to Earn American Farmland Trust's U.S. Farmed™ Certification

Washington, D.C., Feb. 10, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sioux Honey Association Co-op, the gold standard of honey since 1921, and American Farmland Trust, a national nonprofit working to save the land that sustains us, announce the joint launch of U.S. Farmed™ certified honey, a standard for consumer-packaged goods proven to contain at least 95% of ingredients grown in the United States. Sioux Honey Association Co-op's brands Sue Bee® and Aunt Sue's® become the first honey brands in the nation to earn U.S. Farmed™ certification. By choosing U.S. Farmed™ products, consumers can ensure the products they purchase directly benefit the livelihood of American farmers, helping to ensure a vibrant and thriving agricultural sector in America. Funds raised through the certification of each product will benefit American Farmland Trust's work to preserve farmland and keep farmers on the land, both by providing U.S. farmers across all 50 states with free resources and one-on-one expert advisory services, while also expanding AFT's programs to help them to access, protect, and maintain American farmland. 'The U.S. Farmed™ certification is an important milestone in our ongoing dedication to honesty and integrity in our honey,' said Sioux Honey Association Co-op President and CEO Kevin Hueser. 'From the beehive to the household, you can be sure that our honey is harvested and packaged within the United States. Sioux Honey Co-op and AFT commit to increase demand for American-grown products; invest in the future by encouraging domestic production; and help to preserve farmland.' AFT created the standard because America's farmland is under threat. Two thousand acres are paved over, fragmented or converted every day and millions more will be lost by 2040 if these trends continue. Moreover, one-third of the nation's farm and ranch land, 300 million acres, will change hands in the next 20 years as aging farmers exit the field, making the land vulnerable to development. 'U.S. Farmed™ directly supports AFT's mission—to save the land that sustains us by protecting farmland, keeping farmers on the land, and promoting forward-looking farming practices,' said AFT President and CEO John Piotti. 'Businesses can market their support for U.S. farms by getting certified and proudly placing the U.S. Farmed™ seal on their products. Americans can support farmers by choosing U.S. Farmed™ certified products.' 'We hope consumers and businesses alike will join the movement and help grow our future,' said Piotti. 'Choosing U.S. Farmed™ is not just about a label, it's about investing in the future of American agriculture. It's about growing strong farms, vibrant communities, and delicious food and drinks – all from right here in the USA. Join the movement, choose U.S. Farmed™, and let's cultivate a thriving future.' To become US Farmed™ certified, companies should reach out to AFT to talk about their eligibility for the program, then undergo a third-party audit to ensure their ingredients are at least 95% U.S. grown. But you might be wondering, how does a honey company maintain this reputation for that long? It's because Sue Bee® and Aunt Sue's® honey is harvested and produced right here in the U.S., direct from our trusted beekeepers – the fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who have made it their lifelong profession to share sweetness with others. It's because of them we've passed the 100-mile marker. And it's because of them you're guaranteed pure, quality honey in every drop. Sioux Honey Co-op members have been a part for decades – part of families who have passed down the trade for generations – and some have pioneered and started their own bee farms. But all of the members have a passion for producing a pure, quality product that customers can trust. And we're proud to say we know each of our beekeepers by name, because we've learned that's how you produce the best honey for more than a century. American Farmland Trust is the only national organization that takes a holistic approach to agriculture, focusing on the land itself, the agricultural practices used on that land, and the farmers and ranchers who do the work. AFT launched the conservation agriculture movement and continues to raise public awareness through our No Farms No Food® message. Since our founding in 1980, AFT has helped permanently protect over 8 million acres of agricultural lands, advanced environmentally sound farming practices on millions of additional acres, and supported thousands of farm families.
