MLB Speedway Classic set to resume Sunday after Braves-Reds game suspended by rain
After the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves were unable to make it through the first inning on Saturday night, the two teams return to Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 3, to complete MLB's inaugural Speedway Classic. The history-making clash is the first-ever major league game in the state of Tennessee and the first to be held at a NASCAR track. But the record 85,000-plus fans expected to be in attendance only got a small taste of the action as persistent rain delayed the start of the game for over two hours and forced MLB officials to suspend the contest with the Reds leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. How to watch the MLB Speedway Classic The MLB Speedway Classic between the Reds and Braves will continue on Fox. Fans can stream it on Fubo. What time does the MLB Speedway Classic restart? The Reds and Braves will resume play at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. Speedway Classic weather issues The Speedway Classic was set to start at 7:15 p.m. ET, but rain began falling during pregame activities and the tarp was unrolled at 7:19 p.m. It remained there until skies cleared around 8:50 p.m. The game eventually started at 9:40 p.m. ET, but since Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider had already gone through his warmup routine, the team decided to scratch him in favor of reliever Austin Cox. The Reds stuck with their original starter, Tennessee native Chase Burns, who retired the Braves in order in the top of the first. But the skies began to open up once again – quickly turning the playing field into a quagmire as the Reds scored on Austin Hays' one-out RBI single. Play was halted immediately after that and ultimately suspended for the night.

Braves starter Spencer Strider scratched vs Reds during MLB Speedway Classic rain delay
Spencer Strider, scheduled to start the 2025 MLB Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds at Tennessee's Bristol Motor Speedway, was scratched because of a lengthy rain delay. Lefty Austin Cox will start in place of Strider, per The Enquirer's Gordon Wittenmyer. First pitch is expected at 9:40 p.m. Eastern. The Reds announced scheduled starter Chase Burns will start after the delay. The team also announced Miguel Andujar will start in left field instead of Gavin Lux. Reds manager Terry Francona told Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal during the delay that the team might have to make adjustments given that Burns warmed up before the rain resumed. Burns was shown walking around on the field at about 9:15 p.m. "The unfortunate thing is (Burns) got loose," Francona said during the broadcast. "We're gonna have to make some adjustments. I hope he can (pitch). This is our young kid. We'll talk about it (with pitching coach Derek Johnson). ... We'll go figure something out." Braves place Chris Sale on injured list with fractured rib cage
ATLANTA — Chris Sale has a fractured left rib cage is out indefinitely, a serious blow to the recently resurgent Atlanta Braves' chances of reeling in teams ahead of them in the NL East and wild-card standings. Sale, the 2024 National League Cy Young Award winner, was injured making a diving defensive play in the ninth inning Wednesday against the New York Mets. He dove for a Juan Soto grounder between the mound and first base and made the stop while landing on the left side of his chest. Advertisement The Braves placed him on the 15-day injured list and recalled left-hander Austin Cox, a journeyman reliever. Sale, 36, is 5-4 with a 2.52 ERA. In his past 10 starts, Sale has been one of the top two or three pitchers in baseball, going 5-2 with a 1.23 ERA while striking out 82 with 19 walks in 66 innings during that torrid stretch. The Braves won't have a timeline for Sale's return, and will wait until symptoms diminish before estimating when he'll be back. It likely will be a significant period, given the nature of the injury, perhaps magnified by his age, his slender physique and the amount of torque that the 6-foot-6 sidearming lefty produces in his delivery. Since losing 14 of 17 games to fall to 15 games out of first place in the NL East, the Braves have won seven of 10 games while posting a 3.13 ERA that's featured starters going deep in games, none more than Sale. With Sale out, the Braves' rotation still features two ace-caliber pitchers in Spencer Schwellenbach and Spencer Strider, who's had back-to-back strong starts as he regains form following a year-long recovery from elbow surgery and a month sidelined by a hamstring strain after his season debut. The rest of the rotation includes Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder and, for now, ascendant prospect Didier Fuentes, who became the youngest player in the majors this season when he made his MLB debut Friday at Miami just three days after turning 20. He gave up six hits, four runs and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings. On the play when Sale got hurt, he dove to make the stop, then got to his knees and threw to first for the first out of the inning. He stayed in and struck out Pete Alonso before giving up a bloop single and coming out of the game just one out shy of a shutout, which would've been his first complete game since 2019. Advertisement Sale threw 116 pitches in that game — one shy of the MLB season-high for any pitcher — and didn't say anything about the injury or soreness afterward, but was sent for tests after the soreness lingered. Sale is in the second year of a contract with the Braves that includes an $18 million club option for 2026. After making only 31 starts in his last four injury-plagued seasons with Boston, the Red Sox traded Sale to the Braves in December 2023 and he rebounded with one of the best seasons of his career to win his first Cy Young Award and the NL Triple Crown, going 18-3 with a majors-best 2.38 ERA and leading the NL in strikeouts with 225 in 177 2/3 innings. Sale stayed healthy last season until back spasms forced him to miss his final regular-season start and also kept him off the postseason roster for the wild-card series at San Diego, where the Braves were swept in two games. This is his first injury in 2025, but it's a big one for the Braves and the veteran bell cow of their starting rotation.

Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski, pumping 96 mph sliders, opens career with 11 straight hitless innings
Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski completed his second career start on Friday. He's still waiting to allow his first hit. A week after posting five no-hit innings in his MLB debut before exiting with cramps, the 23-year-old right-hander arguably looked even better in his second start by taking a perfect game into the sixth inning against the Minnesota Twins. In total, he opened his career with 11 straight hitless innings. Advertisement Per the Brewers broadcast, he is the first starting pitcher in MLB's live-ball era (since 1920) to post 10 straight hitless innings to begin his career. The overall record for hitless innings to open career still belongs to reliever Austin Cox with 11 2/3 in 2023. It was not hard to see how Misiorowski accomplished it. Per Baseball Savant, his fastball averaged 100.6 mph and topped out at 102.1 mph, and that wasn't even his most unhittable pitch. What batters really had trouble with was a slider that topped out at 96.7 mph. That is not a typo. Misiorowski threw a slider 96.7 mph. With Misiorowski at 80 pitches and the Brewers up 8-0 after a seventh-inning rally, the team opted to leave him in to pitch the bottom of the seventh. That quickly went badly, with Misiorowski walking the leadoff batter on four pitches then allowing a two-run homer to Matt Wallner. Advertisement Milwaukee opted to pull him after that, to a standing ovation from the opposing crowd. His final line: 6-plus innings pitched, one hit, two runs, one walk and six strikeouts. His ERA sits at 1.64. In total, Misiorowski threw 29 pitches of at least 100 mph. That's more than any starting pitcher not named Hunter Greene has thrown this season, and matches Stephen Strasburg's career total. With a start like that, there's really no telling how far Misiorowski can go in his career. He currently sits as the No. 66 overall prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline (with most of the concerns centered on his control). At 6-foot-7, he's an imposing force on the mound and so far exceeding even the most outlandish of expectations.

Braves designate reliever Craig Kimbrel for assignment
June 7 - The Atlanta Braves designated nine-time All-Star reliever Craig Kimbrel for assignment on Saturday. Kimbrel, 37, made his season debut Friday night and allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh inning in Atlanta's 5-4, 10-inning loss at San Francisco. The right-hander had one walk and one strikeout and threw 14 pitches. Kimbrel, who began his career in Atlanta in 2010, was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett prior to Friday's game against the Giants. He signed a minor league deal with the Braves in March. Kimbrel led the National League in saves in four straight seasons with the Braves from 2011-14. He ranks fifth all-time with 440 saves and has a 2.59 ERA in 838 career games (no starts) over 16 seasons with eight teams. Atlanta recalled left-hander Austin Cox, 28, from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding transaction. He last pitched in the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. --Field Level Media
