Lucy Markovic, who competed in ‘Australia's Next Top Model,' dies at 27

Fashion model Lucy Markovic, who first gained popularity as a competitor on 'Australia's Next Top Model' before professionally modeling for luxury brands including Givenchy and Versace, has died. Elite Model Management NYC, which represented the model, announced Markovic's death Thursday on Instagram. Markovic, remembered as a 'bright shining light,' died after a 'brave battle' with a rare brain condition, the management firm said. She was 27. Markovic suffered a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which the Mayo Clinic describes as a 'tangle of blood vessels that creates irregular connections between arteries and veins in the brain.' A brain AVM disrupts the vital exchange of blood between the lungs and heart. It's unclear what causes a brain AVM. In Thursday's announcement, Elite also remembered Lucy for her 'incredibly dry sense of humor,' her warm and magnetic personality, and her love for modeling. 'She brought elegance, strength, and beauty to her work,' the statement continued. 'But more than that, she brought herself — her warmth, her laughter, her light.' Markovic's sister Jelena Markovic also confirmed the model's death Friday morning. In a joint Instagram post with her sister's account, Jelena mourned her sister, writing, 'words will never express the mark you left on all the people around you.' Jelena said she could not believe that her 'little Bambi twin' was gone and that her heart was broken 'in an infinity of pieces.' Lucy Markovic of Australia's Gold Coast first showcased her modeling abilities as a 16-year-old contestant on the ninth season of 'Australia's Next Top Model' in 2015. Markovic proved herself a strong competitor in her debut, taking the top slot in the first catwalk challenge. When Markovic wasn't the top-ranked model of the season, she was consistently safe. She only faced the threat of elimination twice across 12 episodes, including in the finale. Ultimately Whittlesea's Brittany Beattie won the the title of 'America's Next Top Model' and a spread in Elle Australia. 'I'm just really proud of myself right now. This is what I wanted to show you guys from the start, that I could do this,' she told judges in the finale. Despite losing to Beattie, Markovic's modeling journey was far from over. In the years since, the model has posed for brands including Armani, AllSaints, Cult Gaia and Staud. She was also featured in Vogue Singapore, Vogue Korea and Vanity Fair Italia. Throughout her career, Markovic also appeared in fashion campaigns alongside modern modeling's most notable stars including Bella Hadid and Alex Consani. Before her death, Markovic sought to release her fitness app, her sister said on Instagram. Jelena shared behind-the-scenes footage of Markovic posing in active wear while lifting weights. 'Your ambitions were always so high,' Jelenea said. 'In fact your dream was to be a Victoria Secret angel, and now you will be walking with all the Angels in heaven. They will all be jealous of you!,' Jelena wrote. 'We will keep your happiness and energy in our hearts and will focus on all the amazing moments you had in your life. For now, fly free, enjoy your journey and we will see each other again on the other side. We love you Lucy, forever.' ___ © 2025 Los Angeles Times. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

Justin Hemmes, Merivale: Girlfriend Madeline Holtznagel discusses pregnancy

Don't miss out on the headlines from Stellar. Followed categories will be added to My News. With just weeks to go until Madeline Holtznagel welcomes her first child, a boy, with hospitality billionaire Justin Hemmes, the 28-year-old model is busy getting ready for their new arrival. 'I always thought I was going to have a boy. I knew I was going to be a boy mum,' she tells Stellar. 'Justin has two beautiful little girls [from his previous relationship with Kiwi model Kate Fowler] so having a boy, it's like a whole new journey together. [The baby] is going to be his little best mate.' While Holtznagel's relationship with the 52-year-old Merivale boss catapulted her into the spotlight in 2019, she's tried to keep her private life just that. Pregnant model Madeline Holtznagel has opened up about her relationship with Justin Hemmes. Picture: Steven Chee Her friends and family were told about the pregnancy, but it's only now, as she enters the final trimester, that she's speaking publicly about the exciting chapter of her life. 'I keep a lot of my life private and I don't share a lot online anyway, so [being pregnant] wasn't really something I was going to share online. 'I haven't posted about it and it's been nice to have some quiet time off Instagram,' she says. 'But obviously because I am in the public eye and we do get photographed quite a lot, I think now I'm at this point in my pregnancy where it's nice for me to be able to share some nice photos.' 'I've been well-trained with the little bubbas.' Madeline Holtznagel welcomed Stellar into Hemmes' Sydney mansion, The Hermitage. Picture: Steven Chee Holtznagel's older sister Simone, 31, who shot to fame on the 2011 season of reality series Australia's Next Top Model, recently celebrated her daughter Gia's first birthday. And since their eldest sister Anna, 33, has three children of her own, Holtznagel has had plenty of opportunities for hands-on practice. 'I've been well-trained with the little bubbas. I've been helping out my sisters for the last couple of years,' she says, adding that her siblings' support and advice has already been invaluable. 'I call them and ask all those little questions that you have, and they gave me a list of things to get and what things you don't need. Honestly, what do people do if you don't have sisters or friends to ask? 'You grow up with your siblings your whole life and then you go into this whole new parent journey together, it's beautiful. 'It's been so nice having them to just call and ask – and I know that the phone calls aren't going to stop.' Picture: Steven Chee As well as Holtznagel being surrounded by nieces and a nephew, she spends time with Hemmes' daughters Alexa, 9, and Saachi, 7. 'The little girls, you know, they've been asking, 'Please, can we have a little brother or sister?' They've been probably asking for a year now for a sibling. The timing was just right. It was definitely a planned thing,' she reveals. 'As corny as it sounds, I think I was born to be a mum. It's just something I've always wanted to do. I'm very maternal.' What has been a bit harder to adapt to has been dressing for her rapidly changing body. 'It's beautiful how your body changes when pregnant but it's also hard. I've had to buy everything, even underwear. It's a massive change,' Holtznagel says. Madeline Holtznagel and Justin Hemmes, pictured together last year. Picture: News Corp Australia 'The timing was just right!' Madeline and Justin are preparing to welcome a baby boy. Picture: Jonathan Ng 'With my pregnancy style, I'd love to say it's cool but because it's been so hot in Sydney, if I'm at home, I'm in a bikini top and shorts. I'm definitely going more for comfort. And being able to breathe.' For her special pregnancy photo shoot, Holtznagel welcomed Stellar into The Hermitage, the Hemmes family's heritage-listed waterfront home on Sydney Harbour. 'It was so special because obviously we have our family events here and Justin has lived here his whole life,' she says of the experience. 'And this is where our little boy is going to grow up so it was really special to know that he's inside my belly and we're taking the photos – and then [it's] not long until he'll be here running around.' Holtznagel took a step back from modelling when she started dating Hemmes, but since falling pregnant, she's found herself doing ecommerce shoots. 'Which is funny,' she explains. 'Because I haven't done much in the last couple of years.' So her shoot with Stellar provided a welcome return to her old vocation. 'When you've got the A-team, amazing clothes and beautiful jewellery from House of K'DOR, I felt like a million dollars. I felt so beautiful.' Asked if her future could hold more modelling, she replies: 'My focus is on bubba at the moment and being the best mum to him. He's my main priority. But never say never.' Croatian Australian Model Lucy Markovic Dies at 27

SYDNEY — The fashion industry is mourning the death of 27-year-old Croatian Australian model Lucy Markovic, who died Friday following complications of a brain arteriovenous malformation. A serious condition where abnormal blood vessels in the brain become tangled, AVM can potentially cause bleeding or brain damage. Last month — in a since deleted, but widely reported Instagram post — Markovic told her social media audience that she required surgery on April 2 for an AVM 'the size of a golf ball.' More from WWD Australian Designer Perri Cutten Dies at 73 New York Fashion Designer Kenny Bonavitacola Dies at 71 Buzzy Women's Brand With Jéan Signs Deal for First Store Markovic had a brief career, first rising to prominence in Australia in 2015 as a 17-year-old from Queensland's Gold Coast who placed runner-up in the ninth season of reality TV show 'Australia's Next Top Model.' In May 2016 she made her Australian Fashion Week debut at the resort 2017 collections showcase. She made her international debut at the spring 2023 shows, booking exclusives for Versace and Givenchy, in later seasons walking for, among others, Dolce & Gabbana, Bally, Brandon Maxwell and Dion Lee. Her advertising campaigns included Versace, Victoria Beckham Holiday and Emporio Armani. She was a particular favorite of the Armani group, walking in six of its shows including for Emporio Armani, Giorgio Armani and Armani Privé. Editorial work included Italy's Grey magazine; Vogue Hong Kong, Singapore and Korea; W; Vanity Fair Italia; Harper's Bazaar Arabia: Numéro Netherlands, and Australia's Side-Note. Donatella Versace lead the tributes to Markovic on her Instagram Stories, posting photos of her in Versace's fall 2023 show and the Versace spring 2023 campaign. Versace added, 'I am so sorry to hear the news about @lucymarkovicc. Rest in peace beautiful girl.' 'Today, we lost a star,' posted Markovic's Australian mother agency Kult Australia. 'We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lucy. She was radiant, warm and a beautiful soul. We will cherish being part of her journey.' Elite Model Management in New York posted a three-tile tribute. 'Modeling was one of Lucy's dreams, and we are deeply honored to have been part of that journey with her,' the agency wrote. 'She brought elegance, strength, and beauty to her work. But more than that, she brought herself — her warmth, her laughter, her light.' Markovic is also being mourned by the Australian sporting community, the Gold Coast Knights Football Club joining in the tributes on its Instagram and Facebook pages by posting a photo of a teenage Markovic in club uniform surrounded by her former teammates. 'It is with the deepest and most profound sadness that we share with the Knights family the passing of Lucy Markovic, a former junior player of the club and much loved member of the Gold Coast Croatian community,' the club wrote. The club said its senior men's and women's teams would mark a minute of silence for Markovic this weekend.
