BGT's Bruno Tonioli issues blunt response to Ofcom complaints about ITV show
BGT's Bruno Tonioli issues blunt response to Ofcom complaints about ITV show The Britain's Got Talent judge didn't hold back when it came to responding to criticism Britain's Got Talent judge and former Strictly star Bruno Tonioli has addressed the slew of complaints received by Ofcom from ITV viewers regarding some contentious performances this year. At 69 years of age, Tonioli, who sits on the judging panel alongside Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden, and guest judge KSI, reacted following a wave of disapproval over several acts. Notably, Auzzy Blood's act drew approximately 700 complaints to Ofcom. Auzzy Blood, the stage name of Austin Punton, left audiences reeling with a horror-themed audition that saw him inserting metal items into his face. BGT judge Bruno Tonioli (Image: ITV ) Equally startling was Akira Ohashi's performance, which involved nudity and elicited about 90 complaints. Responding to the uproar, Bruno proposed that detractors might be better off engaging in quieter pastimes, such as "reading a book", reports Belfast Live. Bruno with the other judges (Image: WireImage ) Bruno has previously come to the defence of performer Auzzy Blood, telling Metro and others: "It's presentation, to me – it was a bit like the Hammer House Of Horror feel, these movies that had this kind of wonderful, gothic feel to them." He extolled the virtues of the controversial acts, remarking to the press: "These acts are huge in Vegas. It does make you squeal, but I don't think it's offensive. There is a lot of skill in what he does, and the way it's presented is quite fascinating." Bruno revealed his enthusiasm for Auzzy Blood's performances, highlighting their thrilling unpredictability: "What is incredible, and what I like about the show is he's exciting. We didn't know what was going to happen, and it's open to all parts of what we call variety. Auzzy Blood received compliants from viewers (Image: ITV ) "There is historical precedence to it. It's not [just] shock value. It is something that is out there and it has been around within this canon of variety for hundreds of years." In 2023, Bruno secured a spot on the Britain's Got Talent judging panel, taking over from David Walliams for the programme's 16th series after spending 18 years critiquing on Strictly Come Dancing. David stepped away from his role on Britain's Got Talent following the release of off-screen comments made about participants. The statements, disclosed by The Guardian, were deemed derogatory and led to his exit from the popular talent show. The show, which broadcast on May 10, saw dance act Ping Pong Pan and drag queen opera singer Jasmine Rice secure their place in the final, with Bao coming in seventh place. Britain's Got Talent confirms another pair of finalists
Britain's Got Talent was back for its second live semi-final on Saturday, May 3, which means two more acts are still in with a shout for the dream prize. As ever, it was the panel of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and Bruno Tonioli presiding over the eclectic performances, while the former was given Golden Buzzer carte blanche; sending young guitar shredder Olly Pearson straight past the public vote and into the grand final. Lil M's, John Pierce, Alexandra Burgio, Jannick Holste, Will Burns, Cheer Re-Man's, and Stacey Leadbeatter made up the rest of this weekend's semi-finalists. Thanks to this year's format shake-up, Pearson, whose original audition was wrecked by editing according to fans, was the latest beneficiary of the semi-final Golden Buzzer, which is awarded to a different judge each episode. Speaking to him under a shower of gold confetti, co-presenter Ant McPartlin asked him: "Olly, how does it feel? You've got the Golden Buzzer and you didn't even have to wait for the judges' comments!" I'm ready for the final, I've got ideas," he grinned, before Cowell revealed why he'd pressed it for the wannabe rockstar. "He was bloody brilliant, seriously, and he's so small and talented and charismatic! I probably went a little bit early but I was just so excited!" he said. Later on in the show, supermarket worker Leadbeatter beat impressionist Burns in the public vote, having captured the nation's heart with her personal story and singing prowess. "I can't even explain it, thank you so much. Oh my God, I don't have words," was her response when McPartlin handed her the microphone. "Thank you so much for believing in me, it means everything to me!" Can she go all the way just like Sydnie Christmas? Kicking off last week, this year's BGT semi-finals have also got rid of magicians Teddy Magic and Eden Choi, singer Linda Mudzenda, face-painted freakshow Auzzy Blood, and naked entertainer Akira from Royal Variety Performance contention. As for who'll be up against Pearson and Leadbeatter, we have Swedish dance outfit The Blackouts, who use pre-programmed LED lighting in their choreography, and singer Vinnie McKee already confirmed. Next week will reveal another pair. Britain's Got Talent semi-finals continue next Saturday (May 10) on ITV1 and ITVX.
