Indian Army celebrates 284th anniversary of Battle of Colachel

The Indian Army celebrated the 284th anniversary of the Battle of Colachel on Thursday. The Madras Regiment of the Army held a function at the Colachel War Memorial in Kanyakumari district to mark the occasion. The Colachel Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the victory of the Travancore forces led by Marthanda Varma over the Dutch in the Battle of Colachel on July 31, 1741. Marthanda Varma had installed a victory pillar near the Colachel beach to mark his victory. Colonel Avinash Kumar Singh, Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, Madras Regiment, Pangode Military Station, was chief guest at Thursday's event. Colonel Singh and other dignitaries laid wreaths at the war memorial.

Patna: While the monsoon brings respite from the heat, the threat of vector-borne diseases also increases during this time of the year. According to official data, so far 62 dengue cases have been registered in Patna district, along with seven chikungunya. Officials said of the total 62 dengue cases, the majority were from the capital. When asked about the steps being taken by the department as cases are expected to increase with each passing day, Patna civil surgeon Dr Avinash Kumar Singh said they were on alert mode and beds were earmarked in all the govt hospitals. "Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) has been designated as a dedicated dengue hospital, and in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), the ICU beds will be reserved for dengue patients. Apart from these hospitals, five beds each have been earmarked in district and sub-divisional hospitals and two beds each in community health centres," said Dr Singh. He further said the Elisa dengue test facility was available at the PMCH, NMCH, AIIMS-Patna, and IGIMS, and only those samples which were positive in the Elisa test were being counted by them. He further said that while the municipal corporation was looking after the fogging and spraying of larvicide in the urban areas, in rural areas, the health department was taking up the task on its own. City-based physician, Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, said he got one dengue patient this week, who was a student staying in a hostel in the Saidpur locality. "The cases start increasing from Sept and reach their peak by Oct. Hence, one should take all precautions," he said. Director at Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital, Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, also advised people to take all precautions to control the situation. "One should wear full sleeves clothes and ensure there is no stagnant water in the house or around the locality," he said.

Patna: After a ruckus at Paliganj primary health centre over expired medicines given to Asha workers for distribution, civil surgeon Dr Avinash Kumar Singh on Wednesday asked the in charge to investigate the matter and fix the responsibility. Some of the Asha workers alleged they were given expired iron syrup, which are given to pregnant women and Albendazole tablets distributed amongst children. Civil surgeon said he got to know about this issue and instructed the in charge to take swift action.

Kanpur: Chairman of the Natural Disaster Management Investigation Committee of UP Legislative Council, Avinash Kumar Singh on Tuesday said in a review meeting that in case of a disaster, victim's family should receive relief money within 24 hours and it is the primary responsibility of administration to ensure this. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said that clear guidelines have been issued by the state government for providing timely relief to the affected families in case of natural disasters. As per provisions of the state government's directives, in case of all declared disasters a sum of Rs 4 lakh should be transferred to the account of the victim's family. He emphasized on making a long-term disaster management action plan especially keeping in mind the sensitivity of the industrial areas of Kanpur. "Micro plans need to be prepared at micro level for all areas and extra caution should be taken around chemical factories and shoe manufacturing centres", he said. He called upon all the departments to implement relief work in a timely and effective manner by establishing inter-departmental coordination. The district administration officials informed that in the financial year 2022-23, a total of 51 casualties were recorded due to incidents like heavy rainfall, lightning, storm and drowning, in which relief amount of Rs two crore and four lakh was disbursed. In the year 2023-24, a relief amount of Rs 1 crore and 64 lakh was given on the death of 41 people, while in the year 2024-25, so far an assistance amount of Rs 2.84 crore has been provided to the affected families on 71 casualties. Arun Pathak MLC and member of the committee raised the issue of drowning in ponds, rivers and canals. He pointed out that Ganga covers a stretch of 74 kms in the districts and 13 places had already been declared sensitive. Special preventive measures should be adopted there and divers should be deputed there.

India to build agricultural promotion center in Bajura district of Nepal

Kathmandu [Nepal], May 29 (ANI): The Foundation stone for the construction of the Agriculture Promotion Centre for Food Grains Collection and Distribution Centre was laid on Wednesday at Muktikot of Bajura. As per a release from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, the foundation stone was laid jointly by Bharat Bhadur Rokaya, Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality, Bajura and Avinash Kumar Singh, Counsellor, Embassy of India, Kathmandu. 'Building of the Agriculture Promotion Centre is being built with the Government of India's financial assistance at a project cost of NRs. 31.41 million under 'Nepal-India Development Cooperation',' the Indian Embassy stated. The Government of India's grant under 'Nepal-India Development Cooperation' is being utilised for the construction of a building for storage and distribution of grains, comprising a distribution desk, record room, and other allied facilities. 'The project is being taken up as a High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) and is being implemented through Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality, Bajura,' the release stated further. Chairman, Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality, Bajura; Political representatives and other stakeholders appreciated the developmental support being provided by the Government of India to the people of Nepal. They expressed confidence that the infrastructure being created would help ensure proper collection and storage of agricultural products in the mountainous region, where transportation and communication infrastructure are limited. Further, the new infrastructure would enable storage of food items for an extended period of time, thereby contributing to the food security of the region. Since 2003, the Government of India has taken up over 573 HICDPs in Nepal in various sectors and has completed 495 projects. Amongst these, 43 projects are in Sudurpashchim Province, including 2 projects in Bajura. In addition to these, the Government of India has gifted 1009 ambulances and 300 school buses to various hospitals, health posts and educational institutions in Nepal. Amongst these, 70 ambulances and 27 school buses have been gifted in Sudurpashchim Province. Out of these, three ambulances and one school bus were gifted in Bajura. 'As close neighbours, India and Nepal are engaged in wide-ranging and multi-sectoral cooperation. The implementation of HICDPs reflects the continued support of the Government of India in bolstering the efforts of the Government of Nepal in growth and development of its people by augmenting infrastructure in priority sectors,' the release stated. Political representatives, government officials, social workers and community members were also present on the occasion. (ANI)
