Focus on Caste Census demand: Congress to launch month-long OBC outreach campaign in UP today
In a bid to woo the Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Uttar Pradesh, particularly the Most Backward Classes (MBCs) such as the Nishad community, and to press for a caste-based census, the Congress will on Saturday launch a month-long outreach campaign across the state. Titled Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan: Jatigat Jangarna, Haq Hai Hamara, the campaign will kick off on Saturday, with All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Avinash Pande inaugurating the programme in Lucknow. Pande arrived in the state capital on Friday night and will camp in the city till June 19 to oversee the party's ongoing reorganisation efforts in Uttar Pradesh. Congress leaders said the campaign, scheduled from June 14 to July 14, will include extensive awareness drives in both rural and urban areas. Activities will feature the Bhagidari Nyay Padyatra at district headquarters, a 14-day outreach to college and university students, and discussions on key issues. The issues on the agenda are alleged misuse of the 'Not Found Suitable' (NFS) tag in admissions, growing interference of student unions in universities, the deteriorating state of education and employment in the state, and the party's ongoing membership drive. Additionally, the Congress will launch a village-level 'Chaupal' campaign, focusing on the demand for a caste-based census, an economic survey, and the push to raise the reservation cap beyond 50 per cent. The party also plans to spotlight the alleged rise in contractual government appointments and will run targeted campaigns in Nishad-dominated regions, demanding the introduction of a River Rights Law for the community. Meanwhile, Pande will conduct zonal review meetings during his six-day stay in Lucknow. He will hold one-on-one discussions with district-level office bearers to assess progress in the party's reorganisation and resolve any pending issues. The Uttar Pradesh Congress had revamped its district and city units earlier in March. It is now in the process of finalising district committees. However, a new state committee is yet to be announced. Party sources say the state unit has already submitted its recommendations to the AICC, but a final decision is still pending.

UP Cong to prepare ground for party in all 403 Assebly seats
Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Congress on Wednesday decided that the party would prepare ground for the 2027 state assembly elections in all the 403 constituencies. "The resolution passed by the party in Ahmedabad declared 2025 as the year of organisational rebuilding. To implement the plan, the party decided to prepare ground in all the 403 seats," the All-India Congress Committee in-charge for UP, Avinash Pande, told TOI. Asked about the fate of INDIA bloc in the 2027 Vidhan Sabha election, he said: "That will depend on the decision taken by our party brass. The fact that Congress is committed to standing by the people of India is our guiding principle. Therefore, we must strengthen our district and city units to ensure its implementation in letter and spirit." He clarified that decisions on alliances for 2027 taken by the party brass would be adhered to by party workers across all levels. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo During the crucial meeting of the party's political committee on Wednesday, UP in-charge Avinash Pande, state unit president Ajay Rai, and other party workers paid tribute to tourists massacred in the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The party members condemned the attack and observed a two-minute silence to pray for the bereaved families before holding discussions. In his opening remarks, Rai outlined the primary objectives of the meeting and passed the resolution for the creation and training of cadre down to the booth level for the 2027 battle. Addressing the newly appointed district and city presidents, Pande said, "The party top brass has reposed its trust in you, and the responsibility on your shoulders calls for embracing discipline and dedication to strengthen and fortify the organisation in your individual unit." He advised them to develop a work plan of activities and submit it to the leadership. "The district executive must be formed by May 15, block-level executive by June 15, and appointment of BLAs at booths by Aug 15," he said. Accusing the BJP of indulging in personal vendetta, Pande said, "In the current era, when the BJP is crossing all political boundaries and decency, and the govt is willing to break all limits of personal vendetta, the challenges before you all have increased." Citing the Enforcement Directorate action in the National Herald case, he said: "The entire matter is a state-sponsored crime under the guise of law. The ongoing investigations against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are nothing but gross misuse of state machinery." He urged workers and district leaders to organise a Gandhian protest outside all BJP offices on Apr 25 to send a message that they were not scared of the BJP. The party has fixed Apr 28 as the date to launch 'Save the Constitution' campaign from Basti district. The campaign is aimed at holding protests against the BJP govt "for continuously weakening constitutional institutions, fabricating false cases against party leadership, undermining the parliamentary process, and imposing restrictions on freedom of expression".
